Book excerpt: Hidden in Historicism considers how the nineteenth-century philosophy of historicism depicts three "forgotten time regimes": a time of rise and fall, an ambiguous time of synchronicity of the non-synchronous, and a time in which decisive moments dominate. Before the eighteenth century, time was past-oriented. This inversed in the Enlightenment, when the future became dominating. Today, this time of progress continues to be embraced as a "time of the modern". Yet, inequality, increasing violence and climate change lead to doubts over a bright future. In this book, Harry Jansen moves away from the heritage of Reinhart Koselleck and his single time of the modern towards a historicist, threefold temporal approach to history writing. In the time regime of the twenty-first century past, present and future coexist. It is a heterogeneous time that takes on the three forms of historicism. Jansen’s study shows how all three times exist together in current historiography and contribute to a better understanding of the world today. Based on the idea that an incarnated time rules everything that happens it reality, the book offers a fresh perspective on the ongoing discussion about time and time regimes in contemporary philosophy and theory of history for students and scholars, both time specialists and the non-specialist.

Book excerpt: A deconstruction of the modern history book as artifact, How to Read a History Book explains who writes history books, how the writers are trained, and why they write them. It also discusses genre, bias (political and otherwise) and how to read history books between the lines. Written for undergraduates, intro graduate students and anyone with an informed interest in the subject, How to Read a History Book demonstrates that, rather than being objects that fall from the sky, history books are actually socially-constructed artifacts reflecting all the contradictions of modern meritocratic capitalism.

Book excerpt: Winner of two Lambda Rising Awards This richly revealing anthology brings together for the first time the vital new scholarly studies now lifting the veil from the gay and lesbian past. Such notable researchers as John Boswell, Shari Benstock, Carroll Smith-Rosenberg, Jeffrey Weeks and John D’Emilio illuminate gay and lesbian life as it evolved in places as diverse as the Athens of Plato, Renaissance Italy, Victorian London, jazz Age Harlem, Revolutionary Russia, Nazi Germany, Castro’s Cuba, post-World War II San Francisco—and peoples as varied as South African black miners, American Indians, Chinese courtiers, Japanese samurai, English schoolboys and girls, and urban working women. Gender and sexuality, repression and resistance, deviance and acceptance, identity and community—all are given a context in this fascinating work. "A landmark of a book and a landmark of ideas that will shatter ignorance and delusion."—Catharine Stimpson, University Professor and Dean Emerita of the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University “Ground-breaking.”—Publishers Weekly “The juxtaposition of diverse perspectives and research crossing boundaries of race, gender, culture, and time encourages a lively dialogue. Highly recommended for history collections, and especially gay studies.”—Library Journal

Book Hidden in History The Untold Stories of Women During World War I and World War II

Download or read book Hidden in History The Untold Stories of Women During World War I and World War II written by Rachel Basinger and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, the U.S. Secretary of Defense officially lifted the ban on women in the military serving in combat. But a century before, women were involved with the military in ways you might not realize. In both World War I and World War II, women across the globe were invaluable to their home countries, regardless of which side they fought on. For much of the 20th century, it was common for most women to be housewives. But with most men off fighting on the front, it was up to the women to keep their countries running. Many women supported the war effort in traditional ways, like planting victory gardens and buying war bonds, but they also held titles like spy, war correspondent, code breaker, and pilot. A few women even disguised themselves as men to join them in battle. With “Hidden in History: The Untold Stories of Women During World War I and World War II,” the often-forgotten role of women from across the globe who served on the front lines and on the home front is remembered and honored. Brave women crossed battle lines and served their nation as real-life Rosie the Riveters, changing the role of women in society forever. From Ida Mullerthal, the World War I spy with classified information tattooed on her back to Mary Amanda Sabourin, one of the first female U.S. Marines, read the untold stories of what the American War Department called “the vast reserve of woman power.”
