Book Hidden History of Greater Niagara

Download or read book Hidden History of Greater Niagara written by Bob Kostoff and published by American Chronicles. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Niagara Falls Region is known as a popular destination for honeymooners, a standing challenge for any daredevil with a barrel or tightrope and a scenic spot to revel in the sprawling beauty of gardens and, of course, waterfalls. This collection of little-known tales illuminates the fascinating men and women who have been privileged to call this breathtaking area home. Local journalist Bob Kostoff reveals the truth behind political figures like Grover Cleveland, whose alleged illegitimate child was born and raised in Buffalo, and female presidential candidate Belva Lockwood of Royalton, who campaigned in an era when she could not even vote. From illegal women's boxing matches on the water in North Tonawonda to criminal hangings that morphed into musical celebrations, there is much more to this storied land than its famous enchantments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans call Niagara Falls a natural wonder, but the Falls aren't very natural anymore. In fact, they are a study in artifice. Water diverted, riverbed reshaped, brink stabilized and landscape redesigned, the Falls are more a monument to man's meddling than to nature's strength. Held up as an example of something real, they are hemmed in with fakery -- waxworks, haunted houses, IMAX films and ersatz Indian tales. A symbol of American manifest destiny, they are shared politely with Canada. Emblem of nature's power, they are completely human-controlled. Archetype of natural beauty, they belie an ugly environmental legacy still bubbling up from below. On every level, Niagara Falls is a monument to how America falsifies nature, reshaping its contours and redirecting its force while claiming to submit to its will. Combining history, reportage and personal narrative, Inventing Niagara traces Niagara's journey from sublime icon to engineering marvel to camp spectacle. Along the way, Ginger Strand uncovers the hidden history of America's waterfall: the Mohawk chief who wrested the Falls from his adopted tribe, the revered town father who secretly assisted slave catchers, the wartime workers who unknowingly helped build the Bomb and the building contractor who bought and sold a pharaoh. With an uncanny ability to zero in on the buried truth, Strand introduces us to underwater dams, freaks of nature, mythical maidens and 280,000 radioactive mice buried at Niagara. From LaSalle to Lincoln to Los Alamos, Mohawks to Marilyn, Niagara's story is America's story, a tale of dreams founded on the mastery of nature. At a time of increasing environmental crisis, Inventing Niagara shows us how understanding the cultural history of nature might help us rethink our place in it today.

Book The Hidden History of International Law in the Americas

Download or read book The Hidden History of International Law in the Americas written by Dr. Juan Pablo Scarfi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law has played a crucial role in the construction of imperial projects. Yet within the growing field of studies about the history of international law and empire, scholars have seldom considered this complicit relationship in the Americas. The Hidden History of International Law in the Americas offers the first exploration of the deployment of international law for the legitimization of U.S. ascendancy as an informal empire in Latin America. This book explores the intellectual history of a distinctive idea of American international law in the Americas, focusing principally on the evolution of the American Institute of International Law (AIIL). This organization was created by U.S. and Chilean jurists James Brown Scott and Alejandro Alvarez in Washington D.C. for the construction, development, and codification of international law across the Americas. Juan Pablo Scarfi examines the debates sparked by the AIIL over American international law, intervention and non-intervention, Pan-Americanism, the codification of public and private international law and the nature and scope of the Monroe Doctrine, as well as the international legal thought of Scott, Alvarez, and a number of jurists, diplomats, politicians, and intellectuals from the Americas. Professor Scarfi argues that American international law, as advanced primarily by the AIIL, was driven by a U.S.-led imperial aspiration of civilizing Latin America through the promotion of the international rule of law. By providing a convincing critical account of the legal and historical foundations of the Inter-American System, this book will stimulate debate among international lawyers, IR scholars, political scientists, and intellectual historians.

Book History of Niagara in Part Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Niagara in Part Classic Reprint written by Janet Carnochan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Niagara (in Part) A few words in explanation. This is not the story of Niagara now. My work for years appears to have been not to exploit the present but to try to do justice to those who have gone before, to tell of the noble work they aecom plished and of the difficulties they surmounted. It must be seen that, though so much has been gathered, still much remains untold. For this reason I have placed the words In Part following the words History of Niagara, hoping that others may take up the work. It will be seen that much has been drawn from my papers read before Historical Societies, but by far the greater part of the book has never before appeared in print, and the same can be said of the illustrations, about fifty in number. These also are from various sources and of many styles reproductions of old miniatures, oil paintings, water colors, silhouettes, old-fashioned daguerreotypes and the modern kodak print.
