Book excerpt: "BOLD. IMPORTANT. BEAUTIFUL.” - Laura Taylor Namey, New York Times bestselling author of A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow In Erin Hahn’s Never Saw You Coming, sometimes it takes a leap of faith to find yourself. Eighteen-year-old Meg Hennessey just found out her entire childhood was a lie. So instead of taking a gap year before college to find herself, she ends up traveling north to meet what’s left of the family she never knew existed - all while questioning the ideals she grew up with. While there, she meets Micah Allen, a former pastor’s kid whose dad ended up in prison, leaving Micah with his own complicated relationship with faith. The clock is ticking on his probation hearing and Micah, now 19, feels the pressure to forgive - even when he can’t possibly forget. As Meg and Micah grow closer, they are confronted with the heavy flutterings of first love and all the complications it brings. Together, they must navigate the sometimes-painful process of cutting ties with childhood beliefs as they build toward something truer and straight from the heart. "Heartfelt and utterly genuine... I already want to reread it." - Erin A. Craig, New York Times bestselling author of Small Favors

Book Death List

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edwin F. Becker
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2012-08-15
  • ISBN : 1477224327
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book Death List written by Edwin F. Becker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When incurable pedophiles are released into our society, does it give you comfort knowing where they live? That isif they bother to register. It is only circumstance that allows some dying senior citizens to realize they are exempt from the penalties associated with making the sex offender registry their Death List! Targeting the worst of the worst, they decide to make the world a bit safer for the children. In their rationale, even if they are caught, they will be dead before they are sentenced. This group of flawed, unhappy Baby Boomers, made up by a cast of very different characters decides that if the law itself is broken, then breaking the law does not apply. This is a very original story that incorporates many aspects that this gray generation is faced with, as well as their personal feelings, which transition as they bond in a common cause. Make no mistake, this is a violent book. No one is spared, as this heinous disease has spread to those in the most respected positions. The solution? Personal justice dealt out in large doses. Think about it. If a tiger was loose in your city, what kind of response would it bring from those in authority? Yet an incurable pedophile can be a multiple offender and living next door to you. The characters in this book are tired of watching the heinous crimes against children on the news. They realize they are immune from punishment, which for some offers a chance at redemption. This book also offers a glimpse of the world from the perspective of those that are a lost generation. Losing their jobs to younger workers and without insurance, stuck at an age where they are too young for government benefits, and recipients of the separation syndrome that has affected so many families. These are grandparents that refuse to accept that their grandchildren could become prey to these predators. Expect the unexpected, as they proceed with assistance and divine intervention. This book should make you cheer, laugh, think and even shed a tear. The first book marketing person that read this work, called me to say it was in chapter two that he went online to find the 15 sex offenders lived with a two mile radius of his home. I have two little girls! he told me. I hope it makes some people aware and more protective of their children. I hope it causes some to write or call these judges that put these incurables back into our society. Given the proliferation of these crimes, this book may contain the only possible solution and become prophetic.

Book excerpt: "I stood on the bridge just before midnight, the wind from the ocean arriving in violent blasts, as if saying under its breath, ‘Jump, motherf***er, jump.’ This was the last of a string of attempted departures, most orchestrated in my tired mind. Always a bitter reminder of all that had been lost and destroyed by my foolishness." When suicide feels like your best option, you know something has gone horribly wrong – and that’s just how Matt Thomson felt. He had lost everything: his wife, his children, his job, all his money, and his front door key. But everything changes when he meets Joey Murphy, ex-Merchant Marine, entrepreneur, teacher, and wild man, an enigmatic mixture of Forrest Gump, Merlin, and a long-lost best friend. Upon hearing Matt’s woes, Joey offers Matt a life-changing deal he can’t resist: "The life you know has been completely predetermined by automatic habits, both your triumphs and your failures. If you are really at the end of your rope, these habits will drop away, and you will be free . . . I give you ten days, starting today. I will show you all you need to see. It is up to you." And with the deal struck, Joey leads Matt on the roller-coaster ride of his life: a ten-day adventure filled with dodging cop cars, playing Blind Man’s baseball on the edge of a cliff, finding heaven in a Taco Bell, and learning how to open the hearts of total strangers. Joey introduces Matt to "the True Teacher," but also leads him to face his own deepest darkness and despair.

Suffering is an unavoidable part of life, but how do we engage our suffering in a culture that teaches us to avoid suffering at all costs? Through the telling of two stories, the horrific death of his parents and the exiled Judeans of the sixth century BCE, Chris Williams offers a way of engaging suffering that questions the dominant voices of popular culture. Perhaps hope is not found in avoiding suffering at all costs, but by inviting others into our darkest moments.
