Book excerpt: At the height of Australia s 1970s recession, two young men leave home seeking fame and fortune. They travel through Queensland s outback looking for work and arrive in Mount Isa, near broke. The city takes them in and so begins the adventure of creating their lives in the remote, rough and tumble environment of one of Australia s biggest mining communities. Set in among the hot, dry and arid landscape of Queensland s Gulf Country, the two newcomers discover both the delights and difficulties of living far inland from their coastal origins. A variety of jobs take them to places that few people would have ever experienced, from prospecting deep in the bush to dark, damp mines located thousands of metres underground. Mates is a great story infused with warm Australian characteristics and humour. The region s great mining history, Aboriginal people and extraordinary bushland have all been thoroughly researched and richly described by author Stephen Outram.

Book Zigzagging Down a Wild Trail

Download or read book Zigzagging Down a Wild Trail written by Bobbie Ann Mason and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2002-07-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable book, the author of Shiloh and Other Stories, In Country, and other award-winning books gives us powerful new stories that capture the restless energy of life in contemporary America. The characters here are travelers and seekers, feeling their way toward, or away from the defining moments of their lives. They roam out into the world to England, Alaska, Texas, Saudi Arabia, or ricochet back home to Kentucky, ceaselessly searching, exploring, testing for limits. I felt strange, says Chrissy in With Jazz, as though all my life I had been zigzagging down a wild trail to this particular place. In Charger, a teenage boy races along the interstate, seeking the father who abandoned him years before. In Rolling into Atlanta, a young woman searches for the kind of authenticity she remembers from her rural childhood. In Proper Gypsies, Nancy deals with the shock of being robbed in London. In The Funeral Side, Sandra comes home to try to fulfill her responsibilities to her family, but yearns to escape again to Alaska and the northern lights that haunt her. Writing in the spare, precise, beautifully nuanced language for which she is famous, Bobbie Ann Mason expands her art here in dramatic and illuminating fashion. These fascinating stories bring to life surprising individuals whose journeys shine a bright light on life as it is lived by many Americans today. Zigzagging Down a Wild Trail is a beautiful book by one of America's finest writers, a book full of drama, humor, and startling insights into the timeless longings of the human heart.

Book Thorns Among the Briar Roses

Download or read book Thorns Among the Briar Roses written by Bette Shiels and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is a true account of one family's trials and enjoyment of fostering children; some names have been changed to protect the guilty. Our family didn't choose to foster; fostering was thrust upon us. It was a very gradual process that endured for fifteen years. The need to tell this story became an obsession and was exacerbated each time I read about adults receiving light sentences for destroying innocent children's lives. I hope that anyone contemplating fostering will read this and weigh up the consequences of being ill equipped to cope with emotionally unstable humans. There are good ad bad sides to caring; really caring, for other people's children. The most commonly asked question any foster-parent hears is, "How can you love them, then give them up?" My standard answer was always the same. If we can show just one child what being loved is all about, even for a short period of time, it will give him or her a dream to follow.

This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press World War 2 Memoir. Before the war Charlie was a member of a National Guard cavalry unit. In 1942 he enlisted at Fort Riley, where they were still training horse units. Two years later Charlie was recruited by the OSS. After training, Charlie shipped out in July 1944 for England. After training as a spy, in late 1944 he went to France in an OSS section attached to Seventh Army. The last half of the book details his experiences recruiting locals as agents to perform intelligence missions, often going behind German lines. During one such mission, things go wrong and Charlie's actions result in his receiving a Silver Star. He was among those who went into Dachau after the camp was liberated. Charlie's job was to locate certain individuals among the prisoners who had been recruited by the OSS as spies and had fallen into enemy hands, and to get them back. Charlie's memoir covers two topics-cavalry and the OSS-that have seen little coverage in WW2 memoirs. 13 photos.

Book Whole Wild World

Download or read book Whole Wild World written by Tom Dusevic and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exuberant and compelling memoir of family and childhood, readers will be swept away by Tom Dusevic's verve, warmth and honesty. Suburban Sydney in the 1970s is an adventure playground, especially for a busybody, free-range kid with energy, big appetites and ungodly urges. In such open space, backyards are arenas for daydreaming and free play, scars are marks of wisdom and school is an obstacle course between pleasure and pain. And so is home, as the author tries to make sense of his parents' history and identity, known but unknowable, as post-war refugees from Croatia. He longs to be liberated from the family's quirks and the past and finds his escape in quiet moments of awe and simplicity. This is a sensory tale of a glorious time to grow up in Australia by a visceral writer whose epiphanies are as startling as they are hilarious. From rowdy street protests and footy crowds, to the serenity of the Roselands Raindrop Fountain and storm-water canals, to the fevered set of a TV quiz show and the disco floor, Dusevic launches himself into the whole wild world

It was open season on organized crime and labor racketeers. A letter to the president of the United States effectively launched the Office of Labor Racketeering and Organized Crime with a bag of tools, which included the RICO statute, the Inspector General Act, organized crime bill, Presidential Commission on Organized Crime . . . and a hundred agents. After James Rydal Hoffa, president of Teamsters International, disappeared in 1975, there were no definitive answers as to what happened for years. Still today, there are unanswered questions to the mystery, like, where is the body? I was put into an unrelenting position to find out. Everybody has a story. This is my storya true story.
