Book excerpt: Hey, Buddy, I Am Your Body is the first installment of a series on body, mind, and soul called Kids' Questions about Life. An educational book written in simple language for parents, teachers, and kids who are pondering the deeper, more complex yet so essential issues of life. This is an early introduction on who we are and how to take care of ourselves.Explaining the complexity of the human being in general -- in this book, the human body more specifically -- is not an easy but very important task for parents. These concepts are made more tangible and easily understandable through a family of bears. As the Teddy kids ask questions about their bodies, Mommy Bear and Daddy Bear seek to answer their little ones with simplicity and honesty. The awareness that we are part of nature and made from the same building blocks as everything else in nature helps to understand how to take care of the body. Knowing about the language of the body and becoming more aware of it is also very essential. The body knows how to heal itself, but it needs our help to make informed and wise choices for a healthy and happy lifestyle.More information online at www.KidsQuestionsAboutLife.com

Book Hey Buddy

Download or read book Hey Buddy written by Gary W. Moore and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “thoroughly fun . . . [and] crazy good” memoir about one man’s life and how it was changed by the legacy of a rockabilly legend (Chicago Sun-Times). Buddy Holly, icon: black horn-rimmed glasses, blue jeans, a white T-shirt, white socks, loafers, and “Peggy Sue.” Not so much to Gary W. Moore. Admitting he “grew up in a Rock & Roll vacuum,” Gary favored jazz. He couldn’t name a single Buddy Holly song. Buddy Rich? Yes. But that changed in a single evening when Gary was dragged along to a Winter Dance Party in Cedar Falls, Iowa—a tribute to Buddy’s final, tragic 1959 tour. It was headlined by musician extraordinaire John Mueller, whose uncanny recreation of the legend was hailed by Buddy’s own brother Travis as “the best I’ve ever seen.” It took just one song to seize Gary’s heart and soul. From then on, for Gary, it was everything Buddy. In this inspiring “rock-and-rollercoaster of a read”, Moore shares his personal journey to learn more about Buddy’s life, music, his influence, his impact, and the times in which he lived (Bill Guertin, author of Reality Sells). He’d meet Buddy’s friends and family, celebrities, Buddy Holly fans, and make a new friend himself in John Mueller. The result is “as American as apple pie and as compelling as Don McLean’s legendary hit about The Day the Music Died” (James Riordan, New York Times–bestselling author).

Book excerpt: With searing honesty, tender prose and outrageous humour, Adam Levin takes us through the daily trials of living with Aids, travelling from promiscuity and dangerous denial, through the terrors of imminent mortality, to face the realities of his disease. But this book’s power lies not only in its value as a guide for coping with life-threatening illnesses, but in the rich quality of the narrative. Levin journeyed to remote, unimagined places to write The Wonder Safaris, but it is his Aidsafari – the frightening, internal journey that kept him on his sickbed for two years – that ultimately reveals his raw honesty, indomitable passion and remarkable insights about love, lostness and life, and how rarely it fails to surprise us.

Book excerpt: A strong urge compels Cyn to dance a waltz in the precinct parking garage. The same compulsion at the same time forces Ali to waltz in her apartment. The impulses tailor themselves to the women. Cyn faces the overwhelming desire to torture a homicide suspect and shoot a homeless man, while Ali grapples with a yearning to shoplift and steal from a cash register. The women morph into passengers in their own bodies, aware of everything around them but incapable of manipulating events, like passengers on a bus watching the world pass by beyond the windows, while the influence nobbles them toward maiming, mayhem, and murder. The duo subsist like most people, never questioning why they act as they do, never scrutinizing who or what sways them until an unknown influence threatens to swallow their lives. What about you? Who or what shapes your dealings? Do you even know? Does your will control you, or have you acquiesced to some other force without even realizing it?

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER Named a Best Book of 2021 by Newsweek, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times “A glorious book—an assured novel that’s gorgeously told.” —The New York Times Book Review “An incredibly moving epic about an unforgettable family.” —CBS Sunday Morning “[An] absorbing novel…I felt both grateful to have known these people and bereft at the prospect of leaving them behind.” —The Washington Post A stunning novel about love, work, and marriage that asks how far one family and one community will go to protect their future. Colleen and Rich Gundersen are raising their young son, Chub, on the rugged California coast. It’s 1977, and life in this Pacific Northwest logging town isn’t what it used to be. For generations, the community has lived and breathed timber; now that way of life is threatened. Colleen is an amateur midwife. Rich is a tree-topper. It’s a dangerous job that requires him to scale trees hundreds of feet tall—a job that both his father and grandfather died doing. Colleen and Rich want a better life for their son—and they take steps to assure their future. Rich secretly spends their savings on a swath of ancient redwoods. But when Colleen, grieving the loss of a recent pregnancy and desperate to have a second child, challenges the logging company’s use of the herbicides she believes are responsible for the many miscarriages in the community, Colleen and Rich find themselves on opposite sides of a budding conflict. As tensions in the town rise, they threaten the very thing the Gundersens are trying to protect: their family. Told in prose as clear as a spring-fed creek, Damnation Spring is an intimate, compassionate portrait of a family whose bonds are tested and a community clinging to a vanishing way of life. An extraordinary story of the transcendent, enduring power of love—between husband and wife, mother and child, and longtime neighbors. An essential novel for our times.

Download or read book Breaking the Disciplines written by Martin L. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-08-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International scholars explore the ways in which knowledge actually operates, showing the limitations of now outmoded disciplines. Coming from fields as diverse as anthropology, philosophy, literature, aesthetics and art practice, together they break down the boundaries between entrenched domains of knowledge. Studies of objects which confound traditional definitions - including a mechanical cow invented by an Irish farmer, and the curious case of a mechanical monk - show how a close look at an individual object can, paradoxically, open up dynamic new "reconceptions" of traditional systems of knowledge. With social uses of knowledge currently a matter of public debate, this should be a timely text.
