Book Improved Formulations Heuristics and Metaheuristics for the Dynamic Demand Coordinated Lot sizing Problem

Download or read book Improved Formulations Heuristics and Metaheuristics for the Dynamic Demand Coordinated Lot sizing Problem written by Arunachalam Narayanan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordinated lot sizing problems, which assume a joint setup is shared by a product family, are commonly encountered in supply chain contexts. Total system costs include a joint set-up charge each time period any item in the product family is replenished, an item set-up cost for each item replenished in each time period, and inventory holding costs. Silver (1979) and subsequent researchers note the occurrence of coordinated replenishment problems within manufacturing, procurement, and transportation contexts. Due to their mathematical complexity and importance in industry, coordinated lot-size problems are frequently studied in the operations management literature. In this research, we address both uncapacitated and capacitated variants of the problem. For each variant we propose new problem formulations, one or more construction heuristics, and a simulated annealing metaheuristic (SAM). We first propose new tight mathematical formulations for the uncapacitated problem and document their improved computational efficiency over earlier models. We then develop two forward-pass heuristics, a two-phase heuristic, and SAM to solve the uncapacitated version of the problem. The two-phase and SAM find solutions with an average optimality gap of 0.56% and 0.2% respectively. The corresponding average computational requirements are less than 0.05 and 0.18 CPU seconds. Next, we propose tight mathematical formulations for the capacitated problem and evaluate their performance against existing approaches. We then extend the two-phase heuristic to solve this more general capacitated version. We further embed the six-phase heuristic in a SAM framework, which improves heuristic performance at minimal additional computational expense. The metaheuristic finds solutions with an average optimality gap of 0.43% and within an average time of 0.25 CPU seconds. This represents an improvement over those reported in the literature. Overall the heuristics provide a general approach to the dynamic demand lot-size problem that is capable of being applied as a stand-alone solver, an algorithm embedded with supply chain planning software, or as an upper-bounding procedure within an optimization based algorithm. Finally, this research investigates the performance of alternative coordinated lotsizing procedures when implemented in a rolling schedule environment. We find the perturbation metaheuristic to be the most suitable heuristic for implementation in rolling schedules.

Book Lot Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines

Download or read book Lot Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines written by Daniel Quadt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book considers the lot-sizing and scheduling problem for flexible flow line production facilities. Flexible flow lines are flow lines with parallel machines on some or all production stages. They can be found in a vast number of industries. A three-phased solution approach is presented that solves the integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in a hierarchical manner. The approach is able to handle several important features relevant in industrial practice, such as back-orders and setup carry-over. The developed solution procedures solve practically sized problems in a relatively short amount of time. One of the procedures is based on a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) model, which employs integer variables instead of binary variables. This makes it possible to find (near-)optimal solutions using standard algorithms such as CPLEX. Another procedure uses two nested Genetic Algorithms. An application of the framework in the semiconductor industry is given.

Book Multi Stage Simultaneous Lot Sizing and Scheduling

Download or read book Multi Stage Simultaneous Lot Sizing and Scheduling written by Florian Seeanner and published by Springer Gabler. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to a varying product demand (changing product mix) and different production speeds, bottlenecks may shift between the stages. In that case, a simultaneous lot-sizing and scheduling of these stages is recommendable. Hence, an improved version of the General Lot-Sizing and Scheduling Problem for Multiple production Stages (GLSPMS) was developed. Moreover, several reformulation techniques were applied to this model to solve it exactly. Besides, a new meta-heuristic which combines the principles of Variable Neighborhood Decomposition Search (VNDS) and Exchange was implemented to find good solutions, even for a real-world problem case. Finally, further model extensions, e.g., for scarce setup resources, were proposed.

Book Dynamic lot sizing problems with stochastic production output

Download or read book Dynamic lot sizing problems with stochastic production output written by Michael Kirste and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the real world, production systems are affected by external and internal uncertainties. Stochastic demand - an external uncertainty - arises mainly due to forecast errors and unknown behavior of customers in future. Internal uncertainties occur in situations where random yield, random production capacity, or stochastic processing times affect the productivity of a manufacturing system. The resulting stochastic production output is especially present in industries with modern and complex technologies as the semiconductor industry. This thesis provides model formulations and solution methods for capacitated dynamic lot sizing problems with stochastic demand and stochastic production output that can be used by practitioners within Manufacturing Resource Planning Systems (MRP), Capacitated Production Planning Systems (CPPS), and Advanced Planning Systems (APS). In all models, backordered demand is controlled with service levels. Numerical studies compare the solution methods and give managerial implications in presence of stochastic production output. This book addresses practitioners, consultants, and developers as well as students, lecturers, and researchers with focus on lot sizing, production planning, and supply chain management.

Book Multi Level Capacitated Lotsizing with Setup Carryover

Download or read book Multi Level Capacitated Lotsizing with Setup Carryover written by Lisbeth Buschkühl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lotsizing problems are found in every company, which produces various items on resources with scarce capacities. In general, the objective is to find production plans, which meet demand with the resources` given capacities and at minimal costs. However, there is a great variety of company-specific lotsizing problems due to the complexity of the underlying production processes. Both standard MRP-systems and modern Advanced Planning Systems fail to provide adequate solutions. Instead, they most often compute production plans, which are not feasible in practice. In this book new lotsizing models are presented for multi-stage production systems with general product structures, dynamic demand, setup times and lead times. They are extended to cover production on parallel machines. An iterative solution procedure is presented, which generates feasible production plans within seconds of computation time. Potential readership includes scholars of supply chain management and production planning, interested students in these areas as well as practitioners involved in production planning.

Book Deterministic Lotsizing Models for Production Planning

Download or read book Deterministic Lotsizing Models for Production Planning written by Marc Salomon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with timing and sizing decisions for production lots, and more precisely, with mathematical models to support optimal tim ing and sizing decisions. These models are called lotsizing models. They are characterized by the fact that production lots are determined based on a trade-offbetween production costs and customer service. Production costs can be categorized as basic production costs, which consist of material costs, labour costs, machine startup costs and over head costs, and inventory related costs, which include costs of capital tied up in inventory, insurances and taxes. Customer service is the capability of the firm to deliver to their clients the products in the quantity they ordered at the agreed upon time and place. The costs of realizing a certain service level are usuaIly very dif ficult to convert into money. They include costs of expediting, loss of customer goodwill, and loss of sales revenues resulting from the short age situation.

Book Lotsizing and Scheduling for Production Planning

Download or read book Lotsizing and Scheduling for Production Planning written by Knut Haase and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billions of dollars are tied up in the inventories of manufacturing companies which cause large (interest) costs. A small decrease of the inventory and/or production costs without reduction of the service level can increase the profit substantially. Especially in the case of scarce capacity, efficient production schedules are fundamental for short delivery time and on-time delivery which are important competitive priorities. To support decision makers by improving their manufacturing resource planning system with appropriate methods is one of the most of production planning. interesting challenges The following chapters contain new models and new solution strategies which may be helpful for decision makers and for further research in the areas of production planning and operations research. The main subject is on lotsizing and scheduling. The objectives and further characteristics of such problems can be inferred from practical need. Thus, before an outline is given, we consider the general objectives of lotsizing and scheduling and classify the most important characteristics of such problems in the following sections.
