Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nadat Suriname in 1667 veroverd was op de Engelsen, vestigden Nederlandse ambtenaren, militairen, planters en ondernemers zich in dat land. Ze troffen er van alles aan waarvoor het Nederlands geen woorden had - culturen, gebruiken, planten en dieren -, en dus breidden ze hun woordenschat uit met nieuwe termen. De grote deskundige op het gebied van dat Surinaamse Nederlands was de eerder dit jaar overleden bioloog Jan van Donselaar, auteur van het in 1977 verschenen (en in 1989 herziene) 'Woordenboek van het Surinaams-Nederlands'. Dat werk beschrijft het 'moderne' Surinaams-Nederlands, van pakweg de laatste honderdvijftig jaar, maar Van Donselaar is vrijwel tot zijn dood blijven werken aan een boek dat de voorgeschiedenis hiervan moest beschrijven: een lexicon van Surinaamse woorden die in gebruik waren tussen 1667 en 1876 (het jaar dat de leerplicht in Suriname werd ingevoerd). Zijn werk eraan heeft hij kunnen afronden, maar de publicatie van het woordenboek heeft hij net niet meer meegemaakt. Het is afgemaakt door Nicoline van der Sijs.

De reden voor zo een grote rijkdom van talen ligt iep in de geschiedenis van dit land. Eerst werd Suriname in 1651 door Engelsen bezit. Na de Vreede van Breda in 1667 tussen England en Vereenigde Nederlandanden is Suriname aan Nederlandse handen overgegaan. In de zeventiende eeuw begonnen de Nederlanders Suriname te koloniseren en daar hun plantages op te richten. De Nederlanders wilden niet zelf op de plantages werken daarom moesten ze andere arbeiderskrachten zoeken. Erg snel ontsond een systeem van slavenarbeid. De eerste slaven waren natuurlijk de oorspronkelijke inwoners van Suriname, en namelijk de Indianen. Later werden negerslaven uit Afrika gedwongen op de plantages te werken. De kolonisatie van Suriname had tot gevolg dat steeds meer entnische groepen naar Suriname werden vervoerd. Hoe meer etnische groepen in een land hoe meer talen en culturen. De Nederlanders vervoeren steeds meer gebieden in Suriname en hun taal werd tot lingua franca. Snel werd het Nederlands de taal van het bestuur. Sinds 1876 werd Nederlands de taal van de onderwijs. Aan alle kinderen tot 12 jaar was het leerplicht in het Nederlands bepaald. Nadat Suriname in 1975 van Nederland onafhankelijk werd, werd het Nederlands de taal van het parlament.

This small, ethnically plural society was torn by severe political conflict. Elections in November 1973 had brought an end to political collaboration between Creoles and Hindustanis, the country's two largest ethnic groups; and the Creoles, now in control of the government, were resolutely pushing (over Hindustani opposition) to sever their colonial ties with the Netherlands. But defections from the Creole benches during the summer of 1975 had produced a virtual stalemate in the legislature, heightening fears that the government would act unilaterally. The failure of Creole and Hindustani leaders to resolve their differences led many observers in both the Netherlands and Surinam to predict a collapse of democracy and/or violent conflict once independence was proclaimed. Ironically, the dramatic, last-minute resolution of the struggle precipitated not only general jubilation and relief, but also self-congratulation, as the leaders of Surinam's multiethnic society, long priding themselves on achieve ments in harmonious understanding, pulled out all stops in their indepen dence day oratory. No-one could forget the nightmare of the preceding few years. But neither could anyone familiar with Surinam's historical develop ment flatly reject the rhetoric as being without some foundation. In fact, Surinam, while severely tested by the most complex multi-ethnic population in the Caribbean, does have a record of which she can be proud and which deserves to be more widely known.

Aangetoond wordt dat er meerdere plantagesectoren waren—koffie, suiker en katoen—die structureel van elkaar verschilden en ieder een geheel eigen geschiedenis hebben gekend. Ook wordt uitvoerig stilgestaan bij de strijd tegen het water die het leven op de meeste Surinaamse plantages verzwaarde. Voor het grootste deel van de Surinaamse bevolking was de plantage behalve werk- ook woonplaats. Daarom wordt niet alleen de arbeid, maar ook de leefwereld van de plantagebewoners beschreven. Dat daarbij de meeste aandacht uitgaat naar de levenswijze en bestaansstrijd van de slaven ligt voor de hand: zij vormden nu eenmaal de overgrote meerderheid van de bevolking en waren van generatie op generatie gebonden aan de plantages. Surinaams contrast toont voorts aan dat de Surinaamse samenleving voortdurend in beweging was en veranderde. Roofbouw en overleven kenmerkten, in wankel evenwicht, de Surinaamse plantagemaatschappij. In hoeverre Suriname in dit en in andere opzichten afweek van het algemene Caraïbische patroon wordt duidelijk uit de vele vergelijkingen die worden gemaakt met andere plantagekoloniën in de regio.
