Book Herself Beheld

Download or read book Herself Beheld written by Jenijoy La Belle and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happenes when a woman looks into a mirror? Does she see her face or does she see herself? Jenijoy La Belle finds that women--both in literature and in life--interact with their reflected images for reasons that far transcend the gratification of vanity. In this thought-provoking account of the role played by the mirror in women's self-conceptions, La Belle focuses attention on literature of the last two hundred years in which a woman confronts her looking glass, and through her perception of how she looks, begins to consider who she is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Speaking the Other Self

Download or read book Speaking the Other Self written by Jeanne Campbell Reesman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a variety of writers over an array of time periods, subject matter, race and ethnicity, sexual preference, tradition, genre, and style, this volume represents the fruits of the dramatic and celebrated growth of the study of American women writers today. From established figures such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, and Katherine Ann Porter to emerging voices including early American novelist Tabitha Tenney; the first African American novelist, Harriet E. Wilson; modern dramatist Sophie Treadwell; and contemporaries such as Sandra Cisneros, Grace Paley, and June Jordan, the essays present fresh approaches and furnish a wealth of illustrations for the multiple selves created and addressed in women's writing. These selves intersect and connect to embody a multiethnic rhetoric of the “self” that is uniquely feminine and uniquely American. Calling attention to their “American feminist rhetoric,” Jeanne Campbell Reesman identifies many connections among different feminist, poststructuralist, narratological, and comparativist strategies. The voices of Speaking the Other Self well represent the inner and outer, speaking and hearing, center and frame in women's writing in America, their intersections constructing an ongoing conversation, a borderland of new possibilities—a borderland with no borders, no barriers to thought and response and change, no end of possible voices and selves.

Download or read book About Face written by Elena Bellina and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we represent ouselves and the cultures we live in? Is it possible to trace any boundaries between reality and self-representation? Because the self represented is the product of a process of selection and choice, in many ways to represent the self is, often simultaneously, to create the self and negate the self. What, then, becomes of the self once it is represented? Because the process of self-representation cumulates in a tangible result and given that any representation of the self is necessarily a construct which aims to render visible or knowable in concrete form the unseen and unknown, self-representation is vulnerable to assessments of its naturalness or artificiality, its honesty or deceit. Many issues affect the author or artist’s self-representation, both as process and form: the medium through which the self will be represented, the motivation for representing oneself, and the role of the audience, to name only a few relevant factors. This book explores the multifaceted nature of self-representation in relation to culture from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance up to contemporary Italian, American and Australian culture with reference to concepts and questions connected to literature, poetry, philosophy, theology, history, ethnicity studies, gender studies, and visual arts.

Book excerpt: The complex nature of globalization increasingly requires a comparative approach to literature in order to understand how migration and commodity flows impact aesthetic production and expressive practices. This special issue of Symbolism: An International Journal of Critical Aesthetics explores the trans-American dimensions of Latina/o literature in a trans-Atlantic context. Examining the theoretical implications suggested by the comparison of the global North-global South dynamics of material and aesthetic exchange, this volume highlights emergent Latina/o authors, texts, and methodologies of interest in for comparative literary studies. In the essays, literary scholars address questions of the transculturation, translation, and reception of Latina/o literature in the United States and Europe. In the interviews, emergent Latina/o authors speak to the processes of creative writing in a transnational context. This volume suggests how the trans-American dialogues found in contemporary Latina/o literature elucidates trans-Atlantic critical dialogues.
