Book The Scientific Legacy of William Herschel

Download or read book The Scientific Legacy of William Herschel written by Clifford J. Cunningham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a modern scholarly analysis of issues associated with England’s most famous astronomer, William Herschel. The world’s leading experts on Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus, here offer their combined wisdom on many aspects of his life and astronomical research. Solar system topics include comets, Earth’s Moon, and the spurious moons of Uranus, all objects whose observation was pioneered by Herschel. The contributors examine his study of the structure of the Milky Way and offer an in-depth look at the development of the front view telescopes he built. The popular subject of extraterrestrial life is looked at from the point of view of both William Herschel and his son John, both of whom had an interest in the topic. William’s personal development through the educational system of the late 18th century is also explored, and the wide range of verse and satire in various languages associated with his discoveries is collected here for the first time. Hershel worked at a time of incredible discovery, and his work is still highly regarded in the field. Here it is given a thorough investigation, putting into perspective his path-breaking career.

Book John Herschel s Cape Voyage

Download or read book John Herschel s Cape Voyage written by Steven Ruskin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1833 John Herschel sailed from London to Cape Town, southern Africa, to undertake (at his own expense) an astronomical exploration of the southern heavens, as well as a terrestrial exploration of the area around Cape Town. After his return to England in 1838, and as a result of his voyage, he was highly esteemed and became Britain's most recognized man of science. In 1847 his southern hemisphere astronomical observations were published as the Cape Results. The main argument of Ruskin's book is that Herschel's voyage and the publication of the Cape Results, in addition to their contemporary scientific importance, were also significant for nineteenth-century culture and politics. In this book it is demonstrated that the reason for Herschel's widespread cultural renown was the popular notion that his voyage to the Cape was a project aligned with the imperial ambitions of the British government. By leaving England for one of its colonies, and pursuing there a significant scientific project, Herschel was seen in the same light as other British men of science (like James Cook and Richard Lander) who had also undertaken voyages of exploration and discovery at the behest of their nation. It is then demonstrated that the production of the Cape Results, in part because of Herschel's status as Britain's scientific figurehead, was a significant political event. Herschel's decision to journey to the Cape for the purpose of surveying the southern heavens was of great significance to almost all of Britain and much of the continent. It is the purpose of this book to make a case for the scientific, cultural, and political significance of Herschel's Cape voyage and astronomical observations, as a means of demonstrating the relationship of scientific practice to broader aspects of imperial culture and politics in the nineteenth century.

Download or read book Wiliam Herschel written by Wolfgang Steinicke and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the observational work of William and Caroline Herschel. It focuses on deep-sky objects, observed 1774-1817. Most were discovered by William in the monumental sweep campaign (1783-1802), assisted by his talented sister. 2500 objects were published in three catalogues. The study of the sky from southern England also concerned double stars and the Solar System, yielding the Uranus discovery in 1781. But William Herschel was much more than a mere observer. He built large reflectors, developed new methods and thought about the nature and evolution of cosmic objects and the structure of the Milky Way. He was an extremely influential astronomer and had a worthy successor, his son John.

Book William and Caroline Herschel

  • Author : Michael Hoskin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book William and Caroline Herschel written by Michael Hoskin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully structured book presents the essentials of William and Caroline Herschel’s pioneering achievements in late 18th-century astronomy. Michael Hoskin shows that William Herschel was the first observational cosmologist and one of the first observers to attack the sidereal universe beyond the solar system: Herschel built instruments far better than any being used at the royal observatory. Aided by his sister Caroline, he commenced a great systematic survey that led to his discovery of Uranus in 1781. Unlike observers before him, whose telescopes did not reveal them as astronomical objects, Herschel did not ignore misty patches of light. Hoskins points out Herschel’s achievement in surveying, cataloguing, and describing them as “nebulae” and even coming to the correct conclusion that their structure evolved over time, with Newton’s gravity being the agent of change. Herschel’s surveys established a new astronomy – looking at the universe rather than the planets! Michael Hoskin’s account includes sketches and diagrams from Herschel’s manuscripts in the Royal Astronomical Society Archives in which he attempts to delineate the structure of the Milky Way galaxy. While it is well-known that Herschel was a revolutionary in telescope design who constructed the world’s largest telescopes, Hoskin also gives the full picture of the man as an entrepreneur who built and traded some 400 telescopes. Hoskin also pays close attention to the role of William's sister Caroline Herschel, who is usually portrayed as a “helpmate” to her brother. But in fact she became a significant astronomer in her own right. This book also offers a wealth of information of the wider Herschel family. It is enriched by a complete set of portraits of William and Caroline Herschel with an extensive set of images of their residences and closes with a charming appendix on how visitors to the Herschels recorded their encounters. William and Caroline Herschel – Pioneers in Late 18th-Century Astronomy will appeal to amateur astronomers and all those interested in popular astronomy. This book will rapidly establish itself as the primary introductory work for students, astronomers, and scholars working on the history of natural science in the late 18th century.

Book The Alpha Omega Taurus Star Gate

Download or read book The Alpha Omega Taurus Star Gate written by Wayne Herschel and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ALPHA OMEGA TAURUS STAR GATEThis full color edition will interest both modern truth seekers and also those of a firm belief. Although it reveals the reality of those we call 'angels', it beckons the reader to keep an open mind as to how these 'angels' can be scientifically justified. In doing so, the new findings take the reader to a whole new level that verifies the benevolence of these visitors from above and all the sacred teachings about them. Exposing historical subject matter pertaining to both the paranormal and 'ancient alien' genre that has been deemed 'forbidden', this book brings to light some key prophecy breakthroughs encoded in the biblical Revelation; the discovery of real historical star gate devices; a cosmic address; and the probability of an imminent cosmic visitor event. It is a book that is anything but fiction!Due to the high-risk journey undergone in publishing 'The Hidden Records Chronicles' series, the author has deliberately opted for a less academic, far 'safer' New Age style in the presentation of the content rather than an academic one. Moreover, this publication has 'embedded' in it a very deep psychological spiritual inspiration that readers will experience acting deeply on the psyche - subconsciously lifting the veil to awaken one's consciousness. The year 2017 saw a massive chamber uncovered inside the Great Pyramid. What can we expect to find in it? How can we be sure what it is? The ancients have left a record of it... a 'device'... a star gate! The same year also marked the first ever sighting of a deep-space-origin cylindrical object passing through our solar system. The powers that be were persistent in trying to make it look like a comet but provided no answer as to how it could alter its speed. It was not a rock and the timing of it coincides with this book's new discoveries. The author's first book 'The Hidden Records' published in 2003 compellingly decodes secret symbols and ancient star maps in all ancient civilisations, shocking his readers with his very original Pleiades/Orion star-map star-visitor human origins theory identifying the 'x' that marks the spot. All facts considered; it boldly proposes that humanity originated from one of three sun-like stars near the Pleiades as an arrival. Defining the 'first time' for civilisation on Earth and replacing the doomed Neanderthal. Now with the launch of this 'end times' book, Wayne Herschel takes his established theories a notch higher. This new book begs the question: Are we actually in the 'end times', the end of a chaos period, beginning a new way forward and unveiling what might be an official prophesied 'first contact' event? The two enigmatic symbols of the Alpha and Omega reveal a message. And when compared to segments of the book of Revelation texts, the unthinkable is revealed by these symbols. A hidden world crisis is identified occurring right now, coinciding with an end time prophecy and the relevance of star gates, as well as a revival of the lost knowledge of the actual star gate devices!Readers get to go on a non-dramatized journey with a real symbologist using reasoning and logic, painstakingly decoding each clue previously deemed forbidden. Who would have imagined that the recent deep space object called Oumuamua and the discovery of Atlantis would be tied in with the star maps, the star gate and our amazing ancient-'alien' angelic-bloodline human past? It has 285 pages and detailed full-color graphics and images. There is also the means to access an online gateway with hyperlink-referenced links to free view extra content (limited offer for anyone who purchases the paperback).
