Book Herring and People of the North Pacific

Download or read book Herring and People of the North Pacific written by Thomas F. Thornton and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herring are vital to the productivity and health of marine systems, and socio-ecologically Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is one of the most important fish species in the Northern Hemisphere. Human dependence on herring has evolved for millennia through interactions with key spawning areas—but humans have also significantly impacted the species’ distribution and abundance. Combining ethnological, historical, archaeological, and political perspectives with comparative reference to other North Pacific cultures, Herring and People of the North Pacific traces fishery development in Southeast Alaska from precontact Indigenous relationships with herring to postcontact focus on herring products. Revealing new findings about current herring stocks as well as the fish’s significance to the conservation of intraspecies biodiversity, the book explores the role of traditional local knowledge, in combination with archeological, historical, and biological data, in both understanding marine ecology and restoring herring to their former abundance.

Book Southeast Alaska Yakutat Management Area Herring Fisheries Management Report 2017 2020

Download or read book Southeast Alaska Yakutat Management Area Herring Fisheries Management Report 2017 2020 written by Kyle Peter Hebert and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific herring in Southeast Alaska and Yakutat are harvested for subsistence, personal use, and commercial purposes. Subsistence products include whole herring and spawn on branches or kelp; commercial fisheries occur for food/bait, sac roe, and spawn on kelp. At times, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducts test fisheries for research and cost recovery. Commercial fisheries account for most harvest, which peaked during the reduction fishery in 1929/30 with 78,749 tons. Large-scale reduction fisheries operated during 1890s-1967. A winter bait fishery has generally occurred every year since the turn of the century. The sac roe fishery became the dominant fishery beginning in 1971. A wild spawn-on-kelp fishery occurred between 1963 and 1969, with a closed pound fishery authorized by the Alaska Board of Fisheries beginning in 1990. The management strategy for herring combines a sliding scale harvest rate and minimum biomass threshold to determine allowable harvest levels. Harvest rates may be set between 10% and 20% of forecasted mature biomass when above threshold, except in Sitka Sound where harvest rates may be set between 12% and 20%.

Book Southeast Alaska 2020 Herring Stock Assessment Surveys

Download or read book Southeast Alaska 2020 Herring Stock Assessment Surveys written by Kyle Peter Hebert and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific herring Clupea pallasii are important prey for many marine species found in Southeast Alaska and are harvested in fisheries for subsistence, personal use, commercial, and research purposes. The Southeast Alaska Herring Management plan (5 AAC 27.190(3)) requires the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to assess the abundance of mature herring for each stock before allowing commercial harvest. Included here are results of stock assessment surveys completed primarily during 2020, including summaries of herring spawn deposition surveys and age-weight-length sampling, which are the principal model inputs used to forecast herring abundance. In 2020, spawn deposition surveys were conducted only for Sitka Sound, Craig, and Revilla Channel area stocks. Spawn deposition surveys were not conducted in several other traditionally major spawning areas due to lack of funding or low levels of observed spawn, although aerial surveys of spawning were continued on a limited basis. The shoreline in state waters where spawn was documented in Southeast Alaska during aerial surveys in 2020, combined for all areas, was 142.6 nautical miles. Post-fishery spawn deposition biomass estimates, combined for all surveyed stocks, totaled 412,794 tons. During the 2019–2020 season, a commercial winter bait fishery was opened in Craig with a guideline harvest level (GHL) of 6,608 tons. A commercial purse seine sac-roe fishery was planned in Sitka Sound with a GHL of 25,824 tons; however, no fishery openings were announced due to high abundance of young, and therefore small, herring that were below desired marketable size. A commercial spawn-on-kelp fishery was open in Craig with an allocation of 10,118 tons of herring, allowing for the highest kelp allocation for pounds. There were no other commercial fisheries opened in 2020. Herring harvested commercially during the 2019–2020 season totaled 896 tons, not including herring pounded for spawn-on-kelp fisheries or spawn-on-kelp products.

Download or read book Alaska Herring History written by James Mackovjak and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska Herring History is a thoroughly researched, well-documented, and comprehensive chronicle of Alaska’s herring fisheries. Author James Mackovjak describes the evolution of these fisheries from the late nineteenth century to the present, including harvest, processing, markets, and sustained-yield management considerations. The book is divided into three parts based on the purposes for which herring have been harvested. Part I is a history of the reduction (fertilizer/fish meal/fish oil) and cured (salted) herring industries and the bait-herring fisheries; part II is a history of the roe-herring fisheries in Southeast Alaska, Prince William Sound, Kodiak Island, lower Cook Inlet, Togiak, and Norton Sound; and part III is a history of the herring spawn-on-kelp industry. Historical and contemporary photos and illustrations—as well as graphs and charts that help summarize the development and, in some cases, the demise of the fisheries—augment this detailed look at the evolution of Alaska's herring fisheries. Balancing scientific details, historical facts, and personal anecdotes from experts in the field, Alaska Herring History will be of interest to historians, social scientists, biologists, and fishery managers and makes an important contribution to Alaska fisheries literature.
