Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of Sacred History In this age of paper, when the world seems busy "making many books," and, when sailors logs, and prison calenders, are searched for some rare novelty, I turn over the well filled leaves of my bible, and sigh that its rich pastures are neglected to feed upon such empty husks. Within this wondrous book, is every kind of literary excellence. In poetry, its sublime and beautiful strains have remained unequalled. The delineation of character, historical, moral, and epistolary portions, are also unrivalled. To quote the words of a late and able writer upon this great book, "when we explore the treasures of its pages, and seem for a moment to grasp the full measure of its wonders, and its knowledge, how is our admiration heightened!" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of the Crusades Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine, whether glorious in the beauty of her first temple, and the excellent wisdom of her philosopher king, or veiled in the darkness of that fatal eclipse in which the solemn scenes of Calvary consummated her glory and shame, has occupied a position in the great drama of human events, more interesting and important than any other city on the globe. But Jerusalem, in the gloom of that moral night which gathered over the nations after the fall of the western Empire of the Romans, exerted a greater influence upon the minds of men than at any for mer period. The insulting Moslem felt a degree of veneration for the splendid ruins over which he walked with all a conqueror's pride - the African anchorite left his solitary hermitage to weep upon Mount Olivet - the European adventurer wreathed his stafi' with the branch ing palm from her holy hills - the despairing Jew sat in sackcloth at her fallen gates, and even the mingled barbarians of the East united with the Christian to revere the spot where art achieved its proudest monument, and poetry found the theme of its sublimest song. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legends of Lampidosa, or the Seven Heroines Another awful pause was broken by our scheming brother's exclamations. "Eurekas, I have found it! Never had Archimedes himself greater reason to rejoice in a discovery! In this portfolio is a piece of oriental music, in which every sound is expressed by a corresponding image, and ever concord or discord in it forms a picturesque groupe. Let us borrow the old Brahmin's idea, and obtain a patent for publishing sonatas in the shape of landscapes. A purling stream might indicate a succession of soft notes; a forest thick with innumerable leaves would represent the difficulties of a fine chromatic passage; and a full thundercloud behind might express the sublime burst of sound usual at a grand finale." "Certainly," said Clanharold, "the sister arts of music and painting might be beautifully blended by associating lovely forms with ideas of melody; but the specimen of ancient Hindoo harmony seems to suggest an improvement on Lavater's system. Might you not obtain a more profitable patent by devising a gamut of human faces expressing the gradations of intellect and beauty?" "Many thanks for the hint, Brother Poet. And as bass and treble notes admirably shew the contrast between the shrill sounds of female eloquence and the growlings of deep masculine wisdom, we might contrive an instructive example of the concords and discords resulting from both united. For this purpose, I have already sketched a gamut of faces exhibiting the seven stages of spleen, as displayed in our own fraternity, with an accompaniment composed of seven female heads whose scornful beauty affords a tolerable excuse for us." We all gathered round this whimsical caricature - "These fair heads," continued Philowhim, "which I have placed according to nature, an octave lower in the scale than ours, arc borrowed from a certain institution established by seven wealthy spinsters. They reside in a romantic secbision, admit no strangers, and amuse themselves with collecting all the legends left in favor of their sex by historians of seven nations. But as the compilation of so many female heads required adjusting, they inquired for a confidential amanuensis to transcribe it. I was a candidate for the task, and had the felicity of a moments glance at seven heads which would have been worth a thousand pounds to Drs. Gall and Spurzheim." "Pray," said Sir Pertinax, surveying them through his eye-glass, "is the office of secretary vacant now?" "O most probably. King Boleslaus, who employed a hundred clerks, or Cardinal Dubois, who hired one merely to scold at, never gave an amanuensis more trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodosia Ernest, or the Heroine of Faith, Vol. 1 Mrs. Ernest (the mother of whom we are speaking) was born of very worthy parents, who were consistent members of the Presbyterian Church; and she, had grown up as one of the. Baptized children of the church. As she appeared to be sober and steady, and to have sufficient knowledge to discern the Lord's body, she was doubtless informed, according to the directions of the confession of faith, page 504, that it was her duty and her privilege to come to the Lord's supper. But she had felt no inclination to do so until after the death of her husband. Then, in the day of her sorrow, she looked upward, and began to feel a new, though not an intense interest in the things of religion. She made a public profession, and requested baptism for her two children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Scottish Heroines of the Faith

Download or read book Scottish Heroines of the Faith written by D. Beaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Heroines of the Faith: Being Brief Sketches of Noble Women of the Reformation and Covenant Times His little book consists Of a series Of articles which were first contributed to the pages Of the Protestant Woman and afterwards appeared in the Free Presbyterian Magazine. The book makes not the slightest pretence to original historical research. The ordinary sources Of Reformation and Covenant ing history were used to yield material, but more especially Anderson's Ladies of t/ze Covenant. The aim Of the writer has been to keep green the memory Of a noble band of women who, moved with a heroism born Of heaven, chose rather to suffer affliction with the people Of God, than to enjoy the pleasures Of sin for a season, esteeming the reproach Of Christ greater riches than the treasures Of Scotland, for they had respect unto the recompence Of the reward. They played their part nobly, and the very fact Of being brought into communion with a people who loved their lives not unto the death, is an inspiration not to be lightly esteemed. As one reads about them and realizes in a measure what they suffered for their love and fidelity to the truth as it is in Jesus, the words Of Augustine rise before the mind when, confronted by the commanding figure Of the Apostle Paul, he says, Behold here a soldier Of the heavenly c& not the. Book Mary Aloysia Hardey

Download or read book Mary Aloysia Hardey written by Mary Garvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Aloysia Hardey: Religious of the Sacred Heart, 1809-1886 Had the Life of Mother Hardey not been published it would have been a positive loss for the history of the Cath olic Church in the United States, where for more than fifty years she was such a conspicuous figure. Her biographer completed the work several years ago, but it was only after reiterated entreaties and expostulations that the manuscript was finally put into the hands of the printer. The Sisters of Charity have shown a keener appreciation of the advantage of such publications. For they have already given to the world two excellent Lives of their beloved Mother Seton, and by so doing have made the Catholics of the United States their debtors; for no one can fail to profit Spiritually by the story of such a glorious career. It is, therefore, a source of sincere satisfaction that side by side with Elizabeth Seton there should stand to-day her illus trions compatriot, Mary Aloysia Hardey. Both were typical American women; one from the North, the other from the South; one who began her life of.self - immolation after the desolation of her widowhood; the other who was a nun when she was still a slip of a girl; one a convert to the Faith; the other of a family so intensely Catholic that they spelled their name Hardey, instead of Hardy, because some of their kin in Maryland who were known by the latter name had apostatized from the Faith; one was the Foun dress of a great Congregation; the other was substantially the Foundress of the Religious of the Sacred Heart in the United States. At least, to an outside observer, she seemsto have stamped her individuality on the body, and imparted to it the impulse under which it still works. The lives of both are not only an inspiration to the devoted religious who delight to call them Mother, but to people of the world, Catholic and Protestant alike, who are made happier and better by the contemplation of the work of these two splen did heroines who have done so much for the glory of God and the good of humanity.
