Book Heroines of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heroines of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Constance E. Maud and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of Poetry Any years ago there lived in Norway a farmer who had three sons. The two elder were strong, active fellows, on whom their father could rely at all seasons, whether for ploughing, dyking, sowing, or reaping. They ate and drank with a heartiness which never flagged, and slept so soundly at night the crack of doom would not have disturbed them. But the youngest son, John, was by no means so satisfactory. He was a tall, well-favoured youth enough, but no one could depend on him for even half a day's steady work. He would set out to plough with the best intentions in the world, but before he had been at work long he was sure to stop short in the middle of a furrow, either listen ing to a lark overhead or gazing at an upturned daisy at his feet, and murmuring strange rhymes to it, like that other lad who ploughed the fields in Scotland many years after. Then at night, if it were summer or spring time, as likely as not John would be wandering out of doors, or in winter sitting at the window talking to the stars Anything, as his father said, rather than sleep in his bed like a good Christian. Book Women s Poetry of Late Imperial China

Download or read book Women s Poetry of Late Imperial China written by Xiaorong Li and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of poetry by women in late imperial China examines the metamorphosis of the trope of the "inner chambers" (gui), to which women were confined in traditional Chinese households, and which in literature were both a real and an imaginary place. Originally popularized in sixth-century "palace style" poetry, the inner chambers were used by male writers as a setting in which to celebrate female beauty, to lament the loneliness of abandoned women, and by extension, to serve as a political allegory for the exile of loyal and upright male ministers spurned by the imperial court. Female writers of lyric poetry (ci) soon adopted the theme, beginning its transition from male fantasy to multidimensional representation of women and their place in society, and eventually its manifestation in other poetic genres as well. Emerging from the role of sexual objects within poetry, late imperial women were agents of literary change in their expansion and complication of the boudoir theme. While some take ownership and de-eroticizing its imagery for their own purposes, adding voices of children and older women, and filling the inner chambers with purposeful activity such as conversation, teaching, religious ritual, music, sewing, childcare, and chess-playing, some simply want to escape from their confinement and protest gender restrictions imposed on women. Women's Poetry of Late Imperial China traces this evolution across centuries, providing and analyzing examples of poetic themes, motifs, and imagery associated with the inner chambers, and demonstrating the complication and nuancing of the gui theme by increasingly aware and sophisticated women writers.

Book Women In Love Heroines In Verse Everyman Poetry

Download or read book Women In Love Heroines In Verse Everyman Poetry written by David Hopkins and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique anthology presents depictions of female figures in a wide range of English verse - narrative, dramatic and lyric, original and translated - from the Middle Ages to the late nineteenth century. The emphasis is on the variety of women's reactions to the passion of love - whether joyful, idealizing, horrified, deceitful, resigned, noble, curious, or reflective. The collection juxtaposes familiar material with less well-known items, and encompasses a wide variety of tones and moods, from heroic pathos to bawdy comedy. The passages all present moments in which a woman's thoughts are rendered, or her presence imagined, with particular dramatic vividness. The women depicted range from nobly born heroines of myth and legend to more ordinary and everyday figures. The result is a comprehensive presentation - moving, sobering and amusing by turns - of the joys, fears, hopes and disappointments of women in love.

Download or read book Heroines from Abroad written by Christine Marendon and published by Carcanet Press Ltd. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for The 2019 Oxford-Weidenfeld Prize for Translation Heroines from Abroad introduces a vibrant new voice to the English language. Christine Marendon's enigmatic, meditative poems, translated here from the German and collected for the first time, draw on dreams, fairy tales and childhood memories to tap into a world beyond conscious reach. Marendon's poems do not present ideas so much as embody states of mind. Something is realised through the poem, rather than said within it. Here, the voice is more important than the particularities of what is said - language, not words. For the translator, Heroines from Abroad is the fruit of seven years' steady work. The poems' clarity and subtle force, the 'crystalline, precise quality of their lyricism' (Sasha Dugdale), are testament to that humble, unhurried collaboration in words.
