Book Heroines of Fiction Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heroines of Fiction Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by William D. Howells and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of Fiction, Vol. 2 HE interest felt in the novels of the Broute sisters was from the first intensely personal, and it grew more and more personal, as the veil was lifted from their pathetic lives, and the close relation between what they had written and what they had been was seen. In the average unliterary mind the relation between the author and his work is always a thing to be taken for granted. He is identified with this or that person in the fiction, and if the reader of average unliterary mind has the chance of speaking to him about his story, he will say, There, where the girl comes to you, and you tell her, or the like. Sometimes this is amusing, and sometimes it is dismaying; in any case it is useless for the author to protest; and it is not very good busi ness for him to do so. The average unliterary reader loves him and his work, according as he finds him per sonally in it, or believes he finds him. Download or read book Heroines of Fiction Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William Dean Howells and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of Fiction, Vol. 1 In proposing to confine these studies to the nineteenth-century heroines of Anglo-Saxon fiction I find myself confronted by a certain question, which I should like to share with the reader. A day, a month, a year, these are natural divisions of time, and must be respected as such; but a century, like a week or a fortnight, is a mere convention of the chronologers, and need not be taken very literally in its claim to be exactly a hundred years long. As to its qualities and characteristics, it had much better not be taken so; and in a study like the present one is by no means bound to date the heroines of nineteenth century fiction from the close of the eighteenth century, even if the whole world were agreed just when that was. In fact, since the heroines of fiction are of a race so mixed that there is no finding out just where they came from, there is some reason why a study of nineteenth-century heroines should go back to their greatest-grandmothers in the Byzantine romances, or even beyond these, to the yet elder Greek lineages in the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey." But there is still more reason why it should not do anything of the sort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She proposed that the dukes should come up secretly with their army, that they should procure, by force or by persuasion, a goodly number of boats, and go down the river into Bordeaux, shouting: Vive Condé Down with Mazarin! In this way Madame la Princesse's entry would assume the proportions Of a veritable triumph, and Madame de Tourville, by a détour, would accomplish her famous project of taking forcible possession of Bor deaux, and thus inspiring the queen with a wholesome terror of an army whose opening move resulted so brilliantly.
