This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroic Deeds of the British Navy in the Great War When Jack Tar abandoned his tarpaulin petticoat his backbone remained where it had always been, and it is still stiff. If the smell of hemp has been succeeded by the reek of oil, his nose is still keen on the scent of the enemy. To bring him into the fight quicker, the creaking of the sails has given place to the rhythm of the turbine. Jack's immediate environment has altered but the sea has not, and Jack is very much like the sea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroic Record of the British Navy: A Short History of the Naval War 1914-1918 In the years immediately preceding the Great War, already so hard to reconstruct, it was not uncommonly suggested that the British seafaring instinct had begun to decline. In our professional navy most thinkers had confidence, as in a splendid machine ably manned; but, as regarded the population as a whole, it was feared that modern industrialism was sapping the old sea-love. That this has been disproved we hope to make clear in the following pages - a first attempt, as we believe, to give, in narrative form, a reasonably complete and consecutive history of the naval war. We have indeed gone further, for we have tried to show not only that the spirit of admiralty has survived undiminished, but that we have witnessed such a re-awakening of it, both in Great Britain and America, as has had no parallel since the days of Elizabeth. We have also tried to make clear that, in a thousand embodiments, in men and boys fallen or still living, it has shone with a spiritual even more than any material significance; and that it has again declared itself to be the peculiar expression in world-affairs of the English-speaking races. Nor was the little apparent interest shown, just before the war, in the navy and the navy's exercises very remarkable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy and the War Bruins have made good their escape in the very teeth of vastly superior British squadrons. Against all this we have next to nothing to set except the smart little action in the Heligoland Bight, which was forthwith heralded as a glorious victory. Of course we have captured many helpless German merchantmen, and seized some undefended or weakly defended German colonies, but there is nothing very glorious about that. Altogether, it is a sorry tale of inaction, disappointment, and frequent reverse.' To all these crabbed and cross-grained critics I would reply, 0 yo of little faith, how little you know of the things which belong to your peace! You betray an equal ignorance of naval history and of the nature of naval warfare. Do you think that a fleet, however powerful and confident, can engage the enemy if he will not give it the opportunity? Do you think that any nation can ever go to war without suffering occa sioual disappointments and partial reverses Do you not know that in the Great Revolutionary War, which began in 1793, it was more than a year before the first fleet action was fought by Lord Howe on the glorious first of June 1794 Do you forget that throughout that war, both before Trafalgar and after, British merchant-vessels were captured by the French in hundreds every year, scores of them being snapped up even in the Channel day by day, to the very end of the war? Do you not know that the Seven Years' War, the most successful that England ever fought, began with the loss of Minorca and the trial and death of Byng? The Navy has done nothing, forsooth Why, it has done everything, literally everything; for without it nothing could have been done that has been done) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys of 1812 and Other Naval Heroes As we look back upon it now, it is wonderful to think what a daring thing it was for this small and Scattered people, living in their little towns along the seacoast from Maine to Georgia, or on farms and plantations in the country, without an army or navy, without generals, and above all without money, - for money is needed to carry on war more than almost anything else, - to have thus made up their minds to stand up bravely and manfully against such a power as Great Britain (one of the greatest in the world). With all her troops and ships and immense revenues. That we should have come out successfully from a contest SO unequal seems little short of marvellous; and we cannot but think that it was the hand Of an overruling Destiny that enabled us to succeed, by giving us a general as skilful and prudent as Washington, statesmen as Wise as Franklin and Jefferson and Adams, an enemy as indolent as Sir William Howe, and allies as powerful as our good friends the French. Book The British Navy Its Making and Its Meaning Classic Reprint

Download or read book The British Navy Its Making and Its Meaning Classic Reprint written by Ernest Protheroe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Navy, Its Making and Its Meaning NO apology is needed for offering to the youth of the British Empire a new book on the British Navy. It is as true to-day as it was in the spacious times of Queen Elizabeth that Whosoever commands the sea commands the trade, and whosoever commands the trade of the world commands the riches of the world, and, consequently, the world itself. These were the prophetic words of Sir Walter Raleigh, and echoes of them may be found down the pages of British sea power and history. Sir Edward Grey, in 1909, stated the same proposition for our generation in the following words: The Navy is the common security of the Whole Empire. If it ever fail to be that, it will be no use for us to discuss any other subjects, and the maintenance of the Navy in that position must therefore be the first care, not only of us at home, but of the self-governing Dominions beyond the seas and the greatest of. All naval writers, Admiral Mahan, tells us in inspiring language that Nelson's far-distant, storm-beaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the dominion of the world. The world has never seen a more impressive demonstration of the influence of sea-power upon its history. The outbreak of the great war of 1914 confirms and reinforces the views of our statesmen and administrators in the near and distant past. Every night in the early weeks of that war the British public slept securely in the knowledge that the silent work of our magnificent fleet was guarding its own ports and blocking the ports of the enemy and they woke every morning to resume their business as usual, in full confidence that the spirit and tradition accumulated during the centuries would serve to guarantee for centuries to come the integrity of our homeland and the unity of our Empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy: Its Place in British History Of these sovereigns in turn was checked in his soaring plans by British Sea Power. For this reason war between Britain and foreign Powers has always been war on foreign soil. Other nations when invaded must fight on their own soil. The British soldier is conveyed to battle on the back of a British sailor. The inconvenience and suffering of war at home have thus been Saved or confined to the pay ment of taxes. Behind the protection of the navy, generations have grown up ignorant of war. For that reason many good people believe that kind words and courtesy to foreigners are much cheaper than, and just as useful as, a strong and efficient navy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous British War-Ships: And Their Commanders IN the sketches which compose this book it has been the author's aim to improve upon the convenient custom of rewriting volumes of a kindred nature. An endeavour has been made to afford a glimpse of the character of the officers whose work has done so much to make the naval power of England what it is to-day, as well as of the means with which that work was done. In selecting subjects much difficulty has naturally been met, and no doubt the absence of many honoured names will be felt. But the volume had its limits, and the field of choice was wide. In the space available the main purpose in view was to present a story that should interest and inform as well as stir, and to that end no labour has been Spared to B. Download or read book Castles of Steel written by Robert K. Massie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the war in August 1914, Great Britain and Germany possessed the two greatest navies the world had ever seen: two fleets of dreadnoughts – gigantic 'castles of steel' able to hurl massive shells at an enemy miles away – were ready to test their terrible power against each other. They skirmished across the globe before Germany, suffocated by an implacable naval blockade, decided to definitively strike against the British ring of steel. The result was Jutland, a titanic clash of fifty-eight dreadnoughts, each holding of a thousand men. When the German High Seas Fleet retreated, the Kaiser unleashed unrestricted U-boat warfare, which, in its indiscriminate violence, brought a reluctant America into the war: the German effort to "seize the trident" led to the fall of the German empire. Massie's portrayals of Winston Churchill, the British admirals Fisher, Jellicoe, and Beatty, and the Germans Scheer, Hipper, and Tirpitz are stunning in their veracity and artistry.
