Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Indian Mutiny: Stories of Heroic Deeds, Intrepidity, and Determination in the Face of Fearful Odds During the Great Mutiny Soon after Vasco da Gama had found the shores of Hindostan on May 17, 1498, Indian goods and curios began to enter Europe through the agency of the Portuguese and Venetians: but it was not until September 1599 that the merchants of London formed a trading association, and received a charter, which gave them exclusive trade with the countries east of the Cape of Good Hope. The first vessels returned laden with cargoes of pepper, cloves and cinnamon, on which enormous profits were made, to the natural jealousy of the Portuguese and Dutch, the prior traders in that region. In 1612, Captain Best was attacked by a strong Portuguese eet, and beat Off his assailants with great gallantry in the roadstead of Surat. He landed his cargo and obtained a commercial treaty from the Mogul emperor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the British East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region, and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. This book tells the stories of a number of heroes during the dark days of the mutiny. A pukka classic from www.arepo.biz

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Turning Point, in the Indian Mutiny To-day in the hearts of many the light of Chivalry has burned very dim; that of Reverence flickers low; while the power of Idealising lights comparatively few. The following pages are full of the deeds of some of the greatest heroes the world has ever seen; and in almost all these men the fires of Chivalry, l Reverence, and the power of the Ideal, allied with absolute pluck and heroism, burned high. I should like to express my hearty thanks to those who so kindly lent me old records. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Reminiscences Of The Great Mutiny 1857 59 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Reminiscences Of The Great Mutiny 1857 59 Illustrated Edition written by Sgt. William Forbes-Mitchell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny. A fascinating view of the Indian Mutiny from a non-commissioned officer. “These Reminiscences are submitted to the public in the trust that they will be welcomed alike by soldier and civilian. They are recorded by one who was himself an actor in the scenes which he describes, and who viewed them from a novel and most unusual position for a military historian—the ranks. They have been carefully perused by an officer who was present at many of the operations mentioned; and considerable pains have been taken to verify, wherever possible, those incidents of which he was not personally cognisant. The interest of Mr. Forbes-Mitchell’s straightforward and soldierlike story is enhanced by the coincidence that he takes up the pen where Lady Inglis laid it down; and it is hoped that this volume may prove an acceptable continuation of her touching narrative of the Defence of Lucknow, and that, as a record of the Great Mutiny, it may furnish another thrilling chapter in that unparalleled story of suffering and of heroism,—of man’s bravery and of woman’s devotion.”—Introduction
