Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Navy in America NO proud port was Machias. A seaside village rather, its people mainly haymakers, for it lay amid grassy meadows beside its bay. But there were woodsmen among its population who knew how to swing an axe and bring down the giants Of the Maine forests; and it had, no doubt, its share Of men Of the sea, for the ports of New England in those days were Often busy scenes of ocean ventures. The people of Machias did not love King George. All the tall, straight trees in their woods were reserved to make masts for British ships, and no woodsman dared set axe to one Of their giant pines for fear of seizure by the agents Of the king. It was not to their liking, then, when, on a May morning in 1775, a small fleet sailed into their quiet harbor, consisting Of the Margaretta, a British armed schooner, and two lops sent to get lumber for the fortifications at Boston. Download or read book Heroes of the Army in America written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Army in America No doubt all our readers have read this story, and know a great deal about who he was and what he did. But it may be said that the lives of great men cannot be told too often, and to write about the military heroes of America without giving a leading place to the noblest of them all would be like giving the drama of Hamlet with the character of Hamlet left out. George Washington was what is called well-born. He belonged to the colonial aristocracy of the Old Dominion. His ancestors came from noble English families, the first Americans among them, Lawrence and John Washington, coming to Virginia in the time of Cromwell. John had a son named Augustine, and on the 22d of February, 1732, Augustine's first child was born. His parents named him George Washington, little dreaming how famous that name was afterwards to become. Little George grew up to be a fine, hearty, handsome boy, strong and sound in body and noble in character. His father died when he was twelve years of age, but his mother, one of the wisest and most excellent of women, was left with a good estate. She dwelt in an old manor-house on the Rappahannock River opposite the town of Fredericksburg, and there she devoted herself to bringing up her six fatherless children to be good men and women. George, as the years went on, became a tall, vigorous, well-proportioned youth. He got what little education the poor Virginia schools of that time could give, was good in mathematics and learned surveying, intending to become a civil engineer, a profession which promised very well in that pioneer period. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys of 1812 and Other Naval Heroes As we look back upon it now, it is wonderful to think what a daring thing it was for this small and Scattered people, living in their little towns along the seacoast from Maine to Georgia, or on farms and plantations in the country, without an army or navy, without generals, and above all without money, - for money is needed to carry on war more than almost anything else, - to have thus made up their minds to stand up bravely and manfully against such a power as Great Britain (one of the greatest in the world). With all her troops and ships and immense revenues. That we should have come out successfully from a contest SO unequal seems little short of marvellous; and we cannot but think that it was the hand Of an overruling Destiny that enabled us to succeed, by giving us a general as skilful and prudent as Washington, statesmen as Wise as Franklin and Jefferson and Adams, an enemy as indolent as Sir William Howe, and allies as powerful as our good friends the French. N o worthier contributions have been made than by the people of these Southern States. When at last the opportunity came they were eager to meet it and with promptness responded to the call of the country. Intrusted with the able leadership of men near to them, who had marched with their fathers under another ag, now fighting under the old ag again, they have gloriously helped to defend its spot less folds and added new lustre to its shining stars. That ag has been planted in two hemispheres, and there it remains, the symbol of liberty and law, of peace and progress. Book Footprints Of Heroes

Download or read book Footprints Of Heroes written by Robert Skimin and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...most timely, given our renewed national pride and concern for yet another generation waging war...includes, not just the well-known heroes, but also many obscure ones who served with great valor, but little acclaim...This skilled writer will keep you reading to learn more.-bookviews.comIn Robert Skimin's capable hands, all of American battle history comes to life through the actions of the heroes he has selected. Some are familiar. Others are obscure. But Skimin captures their spirit and reminds us of the significance of their selfless service to the nation. This is a great read.-Harold Nelson, Brigadier General, U. S. Army (Retired)A gripping, fascinating book about a subject sadly neglected these days - American heroes. Bob Skimin mixes facts with great storytelling. Heroes from Dolly Madison and George Washington to Lincoln, Chief Joseph, Audie Murphy, Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Bob Hope all come off these pages in thought, action, and life. Good history and good writing make this book a kind of classic.-Frank E. Vandiver, Distinguished University Professor, Texas A&M UniversitySince 9/11, America has gained a new appreciation of its heroes, something that had been lost for many years due to the conflicted emotions produced by the Viet Nam War. What is a hero? In a media-saturated culture, which seems to venerate shallow celebrity idols and false heroics, it is worthwhile to revisit the true heroes of our history.Robert Skimin, a former paratrooper, army aviator, and artillery officer during his twenty years of military service, offers a compelling look at American history by tracing the life paths of its heroes and heroines. While many of the well-known heroes of history are included here, Skimin's unique account provides memorable vignettes and anecdotes, which bring the careers and contributions of these remarkable people to life. He also includes stories about more obscure heroes, whose courage was often as great as that of the most famous icons of history: for example, a Mexican-American kid who escaped a barrio gang to become one of the most impressive heroes of military history; and the Japanese American young men who created the most decorated unit ever while their parents were incarcerated in U.S. concentration camps. Skimin also discusses such questionable heroes as George Armstrong Custer, whose little-known brother, Tom, was a two-time Medal of Honor winner.A Pulitzer Prize nominee for his novel Apache Autumn, Skimin has a knack for telling a page-turning story. Footprints of Heroes is a fascinating tour through America's wars, highlighting the service of those who went beyond the call of duty and left an example that is a lasting inspiration for us all.Robert Skimin (El Paso, TX), a retired army officer, has been a writer for over thirty years and has published sixteen books, including the 1993 Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel Apache Autumn and the international bestseller Chikara!

Book Boy s Book of the Army Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boy s Book of the Army Classic Reprint written by Gen. Charles King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boy's Book of the Army For the most part these stories of brave deeds in army life show the kind of men who guarded our West in the days of hostile Indians. While these tales are usually fiction, yet the fiction is usually founded upon some incident of actual occurrence. The old frontier posts have now disappeared. They were centres of a life of adventure and often of a silent heroism, in which women and children as well as officers and men bore their full share. It was a lonely life, but full of picturesque incident and thrilling experiences, as these pages show. Many adventures of Uncle Sam's soldiers are told in the volumes of Harpers Strange Stories from History, which sketch events in our great wars. In the present volume it has seemed peculiarly worth while to afford a glimpse of the soldiers work in clearing the way for civilization upon this continent. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
