Book Heroes of National History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heroes of National History Classic Reprint written by Thomas Groetzinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of National History Though the biographical approach to history has long been recognized, only in recent years has it come into its own. Through this approach the child's interest is aroused and retained; he lives historical episodes through the life of the hero. His desire to know more is quickened and he becomes willing and eager to read historical narrative. This volume does not pretend to be a complete biographical account of any of the characters selected. The salient features of the various lives have been emphasized and sufficient detail given to constitute at least a minimum requirement. In using this volume the alert teacher will first tell the story, striving to make the hero live for the child. She will use many incidents and details not mentioned. She will elaborate and complete many of those told. Then the child is ready for the book. Its material will clinch the story definitely. From the book he will obtain all that any child should be required to remember. The characters selected follow, in the main, those recommended in the Report of the Committee of Eight. They follow closely those required in the course of study for the fifth year of the Public Schools of Philadelphia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of American History: Magellan The eagle, it is true, looked more like a cormorant than any other bird; but there was no mistaking the three bars checky on a silver shield, which signified that some distant progenitor had signally achieved something, probably in conflict with the Moors. There was also the legend M agal hdes below the shield, which was the family name, In Portuguese, inscribed as Ferdinand himself was wont to write it in his auto graph. Respecting the different spellings of his name, it' may be as well to make mention of them now, in this connection, since there are several, depending upon which language is adopted - Whether Portu guese, Spanish, or English. Book Heroes of Early American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heroes of Early American History Classic Reprint written by Albert Lindsay Rowland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Early American History This is a history reader for the Fourth Grade. Written primarily for Philadelphia school children, there is an em phasis on characters and incidents connected with the early history of Pennsylvania that would be overbearing in a book of more general appeal. That the course of study adopted by the Philadelphia Board of Education in 1917 forms the outline for this little book finds its justification in the fact that it was my priv ilege and pleasure to be closely associated with those who made this course of study, and with those responsible for its final form. This book is, first, a testimony to my firm belief in and hearty approval of the course of study and my intense interest in its successful Operation; and, second, is an effort to gather in one book all the material, Widely scattered and in some cases obscure, which this grade requires. That most children have a strong dislike for the study of history is a severe criticism of the methods employed in the past with a subject that should be of transcendent interest to all boys and girls. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Nations You have been working away with the queer, crooked marks printed in books until now you know how to read. How many splendid stories are waiting for you! To be sure they are locked up in books, but whoever can read has the magic key which opens the books. Will you enjoy this book? That depends upon what you like. Some of these stories are about girls and boys. Most of them learned to read and write, though their languages were very different from ours. They enjoyed fine stories as you do. Brave Joan of Arc could not read; but She could pray; and her prayers saved France. Book Hero Stories From American History

Download or read book Hero Stories From American History written by Albert F. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Stories From American History: For Elementary Schools This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth and seventh grades of our public schools, or for any other pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on American history. The period here included is the first fifty years of our national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a birds-eye view, of this half century. It is the universal testimony of experienced teachers that such materials as are pervaded with reality serve a useful purpose with young pupils. The reason is plain. Historical matter that is instinct with human life attracts and holds the attention of boys and girls, and whets their desire to know more of the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating of notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most schoolbooks. Free use has been made of personal incidents and anecdotes, which thrill us because of their human element, and smack of the picturesque life of our forefathers. It has seemed advisable to arrange the subjects in chronological order. As the various chapters have appeared in proof, they have been put to a practical test in the sixth grade in several grammar schools. Book Some Forgotten Heroes and Their Place in American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Forgotten Heroes and Their Place in American History Classic Reprint written by E. Alexander Powell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Forgotten Heroes and Their Place in American History This book is a tribute to some men who have been forgotten by Fame. Though they won for us more than half the territory within our present borders, they lie for the most part in obscure and neglected graves, some of them under alien skies, their amazing exploits all too often unperpetuated in bronze or stone. Though their names hold small significance for their countrymen of the present generation, yet they played great parts in our national drama. It was the persistent and daring assaults made by such men as Bean and Nolan upon the Spanish boundaries which undermined the power of Spain upon this continent and paved the way for Travis, Bowie, Bonham, Crockett, and Houston to effect the liberation of Texas. Captain Reed of the General Armstrong, after holding off a British force twenty times the strength of his own, sunk his vessel rather than surrender. To a pirate and smuggler named Jean Lafitte, more than any other person save Andrew Jackson, we are indebted for saving New Orleans from capture and Louisiana from invasion. After two decades of history-making in Hindustan, Boyd came back to his own country and ably seconded William Henry Harrison in breaking the power of the great Indian confederation which threatened to check the white man's westward march. Here we stand amongst the great progenitors of our race. Abram's birth was but two hundred and eighty years after the flood: a shorter period than has passed since Queen Elizabeth sat under a tree which is still alive in Hatfield Park, and saw the approach of the royal messenger who brought her, instead of the expected warrant to a dungeon and a scaffold, the tidings of her succession to the throne of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History How, then, comes it, may the reflective mind repeat, that the grand Tissue of all Tissues, the only real Tissue, should have been quite overlooked by Science, -the vestural Tissue, namely, of woollen or other cloth; which Man's Soul wears as its outmost wrappage and overall; wherein his whole other Tissues are in luded and screened, his whole raculties work, his whole Self lives, moves, and has its being? For if, now and then, some straggling broken-winged thinker has cast an owl's-glance into this obscure region, the most have soared over it altogether heed Iess; regarding Clothes as a property, not an accident, as quite natural and Spontaneous, like the leaves of trees, like the plumage of birds. In all speculations they have tacitly figured man as a Ulothed Animal; whereas he is by nature a Naked Animal; and only in certain circumstances, by purpose and device, masks him self in Clothes.
