Book Heroes of Charity

Download or read book Heroes of Charity written by James Francis Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Charity: Records From the Lives of Merciful Men Whose Righteousness Has Not Been Forgotten N 0 soul of man can worthless find All will be precious in his sight, Since Christ on all has shined. History can nowhere present us with a more touching picture of real and persistent heroism, than the self denying, courageous, patient career of John Howard, the prisoners' friend, who never allowed himself a moment's rest, till he had visited every loathsome dungeon in Europe, loosed the fetters of the captives, and alleviated the countless sufferings of the poor prisoners. Not less a hero, was the benevolent Las Casas, who, weary and footsore, wandered from court to court, and over and over again braved all the perils of the ocean, that he might put an end to the cruelties to which the gentle Indians were subjected, and obtain some measure of justice for this oppressed race Baron Montyon sacrificing his fortune and his ease that he might everywhere seek out and relieve the wants of suffering humanity Falk, Pestalozzi, and Francke, giving up every comfort to provide asylums, refuges, and schools, for poor, neglected, and abandoned children - they, too, were as true heroes as the soldier who, regardless of danger, boldly storms the breach, or fearlessly faces the cannon's mouth. But I have selected only a few out of many, as representative men of the Heroes of Charity, for, thank God, they are to be found in all ages, arid in all classes. Well may it be said that the world neither knows nor recognises one-half of its heroes; and the heroes - and heroines too - of charity, especially in humble life, require to be sought out, to be discovered, for true heroism and true charity seek the shade; they endeavour to carry out the precept of their Divine Master Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth. This book traces a remarkable five-day transformation of an infirm institution, caught in a sea of death and indifference, into an island of care and tenderness. • ISBN : 1613747780
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Heroes in the Night written by Tea Krulos and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Watchman didn't arrive in a Batmobile but drove a tan, four-door Pontiac. He was in costume, of course—a trench coat, motorcycle gloves, army boots, a domino mask, and a red hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with a W logo. Journalist Tea Krulos had spoken to him over the phone but never face-to-mask. By the end of the interview, he wasn't sure if the Watchman was delightfully eccentric or completely crazy. But he was going to find out. Heroes in the Night traces Krulos's journey into the strange subculture of Real Life Superheroes, random citizens who have adopted comic book&–style personas and hit the streets to fight injustice. Some concentrate on humanitarian or activist missions—helping the homeless, gathering donations for food banks, or delivering toys to children—while others actively patrol their neighborhoods looking for crime to fight. By day, these modern Clark Kents work as dishwashers, pencil pushers, and executives in Fortune 500 companies. But by night, only the Shadow knows. Well, the Shadow and Tea Krulos. Through historical research, extensive interviews, and many long hours walking patrol in Brooklyn, Seattle, San Diego, Minneapolis, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Krulos discovered what being a RLSH is all about. He shares not only their shining, triumphant moments but some of their ill-advised, terrifying disasters as well. It's all part of the life of a superhero. As the Watchman explains, &“If everyone made little changes in what they did, gave a little more to charity, watched out for their neighbors, we wouldn't have the problems that we have.&”

Book Decolonising Imperial Heroes

Download or read book Decolonising Imperial Heroes written by Max Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heroes of the British and French empires stood at the vanguard of the vibrant cultures of imperialism that emerged in Europe in the second-half of the nineteenth century. Their stories are well known. Scholars have tended to assume that figures such as Livingstone and Gordon, or Marchand and Brazza, vanished rapidly at the end of empire. Yet imperial heroes did not disappear after 1945, as British and French flags were lowered around the world. On the contrary, their reputations underwent a variety of metamorphoses in both the former metropoles and the former colonies. This book develops a framework to understand the complex legacies of decolonisation, both political and cultural, through the case study of imperial heroes. We demonstrate that the ‘decolonisation’ of imperial heroes was a much more complex and protracted process than the political retreat from empire, and that it is still an ongoing phenomenon, even half a century after the world has ceased to be ‘painted in red’. Whilst Decolonising Imperial Heroes explores the appeal of the explorers, humanitarians and missionaries whose stories could be told without reference to violence against colonized peoples, it also analyses the persistence of imperial heroes as sites of political dispute in the former metropoles. Demonstrating that the work of remembrance was increasingly carried out by diverse, fragmented groups of non-state actors, in a process we call ‘the privatisation of heroes’, the book reveals the surprising rejuvenation of imperial heroes in former colonies, both in nation-building narratives and as heritage sites. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History.

Book Unsung Heroes American English

Download or read book Unsung Heroes American English written by D Holquist and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, a great many people tragically lost their lives and hospitals were pushed to breaking point. Our way of life seemed to have changed forever. This devastating time called for everyday superheroes, people who went above and beyond to help others through selfless acts of kindness. StoryTerrace launched the Unsung Heroes campaign to celebrate these heroes. We received hundreds of nominations from the public and have selected 25 inspiring stories for this book. Our heroes come from all walks of life, from two-year-old twins Isla-Rose and Lily-Mae, who raised funds for charity in matching fancy dress, to our leading hero, 93-year-old activist Opal Lee, who hand-delivered food boxes to the needy. Each story proves that even in the most difficult of circumstances, ordinary people can do the most extraordinary things. All profits from the Unsung Heroes book will be donated to two causes: Maggie's, a UK-based cancer charity and Unity Unlimited, a grass-roots educational non-profit in America.
