Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical edition, or “édition critique,” of Victor Hugo’s play Marion de Lorme. A critical edition is much more than a typical scholarly publication of a literary work that only contains a brief introduction, the text, and endnotes. The in-depth introduction in this critical edition details the history and genesis of the play from its inception through its première, as well as a study of the manuscript and of all other original related documents. It also features a history of the première, the critical reaction, and an analysis of various nineteenth-century editions of the work. The actual text of the play contains a critical apparatus that indicates all modifications of the text made by the author during its composition. Following the play, there are literary, historical, linguistic, and critical notes, indexes of all words and proper names, and a bibliography of works related to the play in question. (Text in French)

Book excerpt: Marion De Lorme the heroine, and Didier the hero, are simple figures, and more like those to be found in the 'Hernani.' Didier is another brother of the Giaour, — mysterious, melancholic, misanthropic. Like Hernani, he is a wanderer on the face of the earth, and has great capacity for suffering. Marion De Lorme is a poetic portrait, no doubt highly flattered, of the fair and fragile beauty who has come down to us from history, leaving her character behind her. Although, as in all of Hugo's plays, the plot is of prime importance, we will say nothing of it here, because it is both hard and unfair to give in a scant sentence or two a sample of the situation for which the playwright has cunningly prepared by all that precedes it.

Book Marion de Lorme

Book excerpt: "Marion De Lorme" is a five-act play written by Victor Hugo in 1828 about a well-known French courtesan of the same name, who was famous for her relationships with important contemporary figures. Delorme's later life has seemingly been imbued with significant legend, having died in 1650 but being often claimed to have lived until as late as 1741 and to have had a litany of wonderful adventures around the world. "Marion De Lorme" is highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction, and it is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Hugo's seminal work. Victor Marie Hugo (1802 - 1885) was a French novelist, dramatist, and poet belonging to the Romantic movement. He is widely hailed as one of the most accomplished and well-known French writers, originally achieving renown for his poetical endeavours-the most notable of which are the volumes "Les Contemplations" and "La Legende des siecles." Outside of his native country, Hugo's best-known works are his novels: "Les Miserables" (1862) and "Notre-Dame de Paris" (1831), commonly known as "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame." Aside from his literary achievements, he also produced over 4,000 beautiful drawings and was a prominent campaigner for social and political issues, including abolishing capital punishment. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author."
