Book Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook

Download or read book Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook written by Alexis Mendez and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive contributed volume that aims to describe and explain the design, fabrication, operating characteristics, and specific applications of the most popular and useful types of specialty optical fibers. These “specialty fibers include any kind of optical fiber that has been architecturally manipulated to diverge from a conventional structure. For instance, metal-coated fibers can be utilized for bandwidth improvement, and hollow core fibers offer more controllable dispersion for sensitive medical procedures. Applications for these specialty fibers abound in the biomedical, sensors, and industrial fields, as well as in more traditional communications capacities. This book will act as a specialty fiber “guided tour, hosted by the top names in the discipline. The globally renowned editors, Drs. Mendez and Morse, have extensive experience in research, academia, and industry. *Completely covers biomedical and industrial sensor technology with emphasis on real world applications *Comparative studies of pros and cons of all fiber types with relation to test and measurement, mechanical properties and strength, and reliability *Easy to access essential facts and details at the begining of each chapter

Book Method for Forming Hermetic Coatings for Optical Fibers

Download or read book Method for Forming Hermetic Coatings for Optical Fibers written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for forming hermetic coatings on optical fibers by hot filament assisted chemical vapor deposition advantageously produces a desirable coating while maintaining the pristine strength of the pristine fiber. The hermetic coatings may be formed from a variety of substances, such as, for example, boron nitride and carbon.

Book Non Conducting Hermetic Coatings for Optical Fibers

Download or read book Non Conducting Hermetic Coatings for Optical Fibers written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of military systems incorporating fiber optics require long lengths of high strength fibers. These fibers, like other silicate derived glasses, suffer from the phenomenon of stress corrosion or static fatigue. The observed fatigue occurs when fibers are subject to tensile stresses in a humid environment. None of the currently used organic buffer and overcoating materials is impermeable to water and, therefore, to provide hermetic protection, one must look to other materials. Among the more promising materials are metals, silicon nitride, and diamond-like carbon. The requirements and possible behavior of suitable coatings will be discussed in terms of performance, expected reliability, and economic considerations.

Book The Moisture Protection of Strong Optical Fibers

Download or read book The Moisture Protection of Strong Optical Fibers written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program addresses the military and commercial needs for strong optical fibers having a high degree of durability. The approach to solving this problem is to demonstrate the feasibility of producing hermetically coated fibers, coating with a suitable hermetic barrier, proof testing, optical and mechanical characterization, and analysis of results. The hermetic coating system has been designed to coat fibers which have previously been drawn. Materials evaluated as hermetic coatings included ion deposited carbon, tin, and indium. Initial results indicate that the ion deposited forms of carbon and indium alone or in combination appear to provide the best compromise of coating properties, while not degrading fiber strength. The long range objective of this program is to produce fibers with 1-7 db per kilometer attenuation at 850 nanometers, proof tested in excess of 100,000 psi, in lengths of 10-30 kilometers. It is anticipated that after hermetic coating, these optical waveguides will exhibit a 95% probability of survival in moist environments when subjected to a 2% continuous strain over periods up to 10 years.

Book How to Understand the True Cosmos

Download or read book How to Understand the True Cosmos written by Dr. Sol Aisenberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for dark matter and dark energy are removed by the introduction of observations of galaxies and stars at cosmic distances to be added to the observations of planets in our solar system. When cosmic observations that were not available to Newton are included, the result is a new universal model of gravity also valid for the cosmos and also the solar system, without change. When applied to the existing cosmic observations and solar system observations, the resulting Universal Law of Cosmic Gravity by Aisenberg explains cosmic observations and reduces to Newtons law in the solar system. Hubble observed that redshifts increased with distance but without proof suggested that the redshift and the Doppler effect showed that the galaxies were receding and that the universe was expanding. This led to the wrong belief in the big bang but without observational proof of receding velocity. We will show that the age of the cosmos is wrong, explain tired light, solve Olbers paradox about the dark sky, and remove the need for inflation. We will explain the cosmic microwave background (CMB), explain quasars and black holes, and why the cosmos is apparently closed. The latest Nobel Prizes (1978 and 2011) for Physics should be reexamined. The author, Dr. Sol Aisenberg earned a PhD in Physics from MIT, with a minor in math, was a part time staff member in the MIT physics department and in the Research Lab of Electronics, RLE, and was a part-time lecturer at the Harvard Medical School and a part-time visiting research professor of bioengineering in Boston University. Aisenberg was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi (science), and Pi Mu Epsilon (math) honor societies.

Book Fluoride Glass Optical Fibres

Download or read book Fluoride Glass Optical Fibres written by P.W. France and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting prospects for optical fibres made from fluoride glasses is the possibility of providing long distance optical communication systems without the need for repeaters. This objective has stimulated much of the work into fluoride glasses over the past ten years, and has prompted the writing of this book. It has also emerged that fluoride fibres can transmit both visible and infrared energy (from about 0.5 to 5 ,urn) and that they have many applications outside the field of telecommunications. These include optical fibre sensors (particularly in remote infrared spectroscopy), laser surgery and fibre lasers. Several companies are now established in the field, and good quality fluoride fibres are available from sources throughout the USA, Europe and Japan. Moreover, the first commercial instruments based on fluoride fibres are finding their way to the market place and these fibres will undoubtedly form the basis of many more instruments yet to be developed. The work presented in this book represents the field both from an academic understanding of the materials and ways to convert them into fibre, and from a practical and commercial viewpoint. The principal author and some of the co authors are based at the British Telecom Research Laboratories in the UK.
