Book Charles Olson at the Harbor

Download or read book Charles Olson at the Harbor written by Ralph Maud and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Charles Olson was without question the most influential of the "New American Poets" published by Grove Press in the mid-twentieth century." "With Charles Olson at the Harbor, Ralph Maud, a long-time Olson scholar, friend and correspondent insists that Olson was as careful with his genius as any young man could be; that he achieved critical success as a Melville scholar; that his "projective verse" established an undeniable and lasting sea change in poetic thought around the world; and that he eschewed success of the ordinary kind to create a new restorative stance in the polls that can take us into a different future - all reflected in a large body of poetry that the world can no longer ignore."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Sacred Uncertainty

Download or read book Sacred Uncertainty written by Brian Yothers and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yothers’ Sacred Uncertainty examines Melville’s engagement with religious difference, both within American culture and around the world. It is impossible to understand Melville’s wider engagement with religious and cultural questions, however, without understanding the fundamental tension between self and society, self and others that underlies his work, and that is manifested in particular in the way in which he interacts with other writers. There is almost certainly no more concrete or reliable way to get at Melville’s affirmations of and arguments with these interlocutors than in the markings and annotations that appear in his copies of many of their works, so Yothers examines Melville’s marginalia for clues to Melville’s thinking about self, other, and difference. Sacred Uncertainty provides a much needed exploration of Melville’s encounter with and reflection upon religious difference.

Download or read book Collected Prose written by Charles Olson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-12-19 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prose writings of Charles Olson (1910–1970) have had a far-reaching and continuing impact on post-World War II American poetics. Olson's theories, which made explicit the principles of his own poetics and those of the Black Mountain poets, were instrumental in defining the sense of the postmodern in poetry and form the basis of most postwar free verse. The Collected Prose brings together in one volume the works published for the most part between 1946 and 1969, many of which are now out of print. A valuable companion to editions of Olson's poetry, the book backgrounds the poetics, preoccupations, and fascinations that underpin his great poems. Included are Call Me Ishmael, a classic of American literary criticism; the influential essays "Projective Verse" and "Human Universe"; and essays, book reviews, and Olson's notes on his studies. In these pieces one can trace the development of his new science of man, called "muthologos," a radical mix of myth and phenomenology that Olson offered in opposition to the mechanistic discourse and rationalizing policy he associated with America's recent wars in Europe and Asia. Editors Donald Allen and Benjamin Friedlander offer helpful annotations throughout, and poet Robert Creeley, who enjoyed a long and mutually influential relationship with Olson, provides the book's introduction.

Book Moby Dick Or The Whale

Download or read book Moby Dick Or The Whale written by Herman Melville and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 1082 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moby Dick Melville set out to write a "mighty book" on "a mighty theme." The editors of this critical text affirm that he succeeded. Nevertheless, their prolonged examination of the novel reveals textual flaws and anomalies that help to explain Melville's fears that his great work was in some ways a hash or a botch. A lengthy historical note also gives a fresh account of Melville's earlier literary career and his working conditions as he wrote; it also analyzes the book's contemporary reception and outlines how it finally achieved fame. Other sections review theories of the book's genesis, detail the circumstances of its publication, and present documents closely relating to the story. -- Amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intricate Thicket: Reading Late Modernist Poetries offers a collection of nineteen essays that deftly erodes the simplistic distinction between modernism and postmodernism, showing that many attributes of postmodernist verse form not a break with, but rather a continuation of, modernist poetry.

Book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West written by Alison I. Beach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monasticism, in all of its variations, was a feature of almost every landscape in the medieval West. So ubiquitous were religious women and men throughout the Middle Ages that all medievalists encounter monasticism in their intellectual worlds. While there is enormous interest in medieval monasticism among Anglophone scholars, language is often a barrier to accessing some of the most important and groundbreaking research emerging from Europe. The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West offers a comprehensive treatment of medieval monasticism, from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. The essays, specially commissioned for this volume and written by an international team of scholars, with contributors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, cover a range of topics and themes and represent the most up-to-date discoveries on this topic.

  • Author : Herman Melville
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780810108233
  • Pages : 700 pages

Download or read book Journals written by Herman Melville and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents Melville's three known journals. Unlike his contemporaries Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Melville kept no habitual record of his days and thoughts; each of his three journals records his actions and observations on trips far from home. In this edition's Historical Note, Howard C. Horsford places each of the journals in the context of Melville's career, discusses its general character, and points out the later literary uses he made of it, notably in Moby-Dick, Clarel, and his magazine pieces. The editors supply full annotations of Melville's allusions and terse entries and an exhaustive index makes available the range of his acquaintance with people, places, and works of art. Also included are related documents, illustrations, maps, and many pages and passages reproduced from the journals. This scholarly edition aims to present a text as close to the author's intention as his difficult handwriting permits. It is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America).
