Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Webster and Pinkney Nothing but thought in the one sentence, a mere vague supposition, and in the next an utter refusal which is strangely irreconcilable with Mr. Webs ter's acknowledged clearness of conception and ex pression. No human ingenuity can reconcile the two sentences with each other, or bring them into agreement. How could he utterly refuse, when there was no application made? This by the way. Book The Illustrated Fryeburg Webster Memorial Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Illustrated Fryeburg Webster Memorial Classic Reprint written by Daniel Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated Fryeburg Webster Memorial Rev. Dr. Samuel Osgood of Springfield, Mass, with whose father Webster boarded while at F ryeburg, and who heard the oration, said that it had great merit and was a finished pro duction; and we doubt not that the reader will coincide with the opinion thus expressed, and that he will find in this early effort the promise of those gigantic intellectual powers which shed such a lustre of renown upon Webster's subsequent career. Indeed, so remarkable a production was the oration regarded at the time by those who heard it, that one enthusiastic farmer ventured the bold remark that Daniel might some day even attain the lofty position of Governor of New Hampshire! Exalted as were the estimates placed upon this effort by Webster's contemporaries, yet the reality far surpasses 'any thing which these estimates would lead us to expect. It is almost incredible that such a production could have emanated from a young man of onlv twenty years, and it may safely be asserted, that, for beauty of style, profound thought, logical reasoning, and statesmanlike wisdom, the early history of the world's greatest orators may be challenged to produce any thing which will bear comparison with this F ryeburg effort. Being a production of the transcendent merit it is, this oration will constitute a substantial addition to the legacy which the colossal intellect of Webster bequeathed to posterity, and his countrymen will gladly give it a place by the side of the efforts ofhis later years, to be read and studied as long as the American heart shall feel the inspiration of that love of the Constitution and the Union which he did so much to inculcate. In this ora tion the speaker will be seen to have thus early shown himself a proficient in the treatment of subjects connected with the science of government, and to have already commenced that profound study of the Constitution of his country which after wards gave him the proud title of its Great Expounder a d Defender. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Webster as Man and Statesman Most of us are tried on the spot and at the moment in our own day and generation, we having, in our bubble-like being on earth, a domestic and possibly biographic, but no historic Significance, only melting into the immense sea of humanity or general mass of mankind. But there are mountainous mcn, rare as the peaks of the Alps or the Andes, Moses, Socrates, Caesar, Bonaparte, - ever standing at the bar of the human mind; and, among ringing celebrations and contradic tions, the image formed of any one and all of these giants of genius and power concerns the virtue of every individual, so that I need no apology for my attempt at an estimate in the pulpit of the claim to honor and imitation of an extraor dinary man of the West, one of the chief Americans, since beiijamin Franklin in the civil sphere, New England's most distinguished son, of a permanent fame whose quality it may take some ages still of reflection to decide, yet our opinion of whom has an interest for our character now, and to whom the Scripture figure of a tribunal of Judgment to appeal to is appropiiate on account of the diverse and opposwe pleas, one against him, another in his behalf, there never having been a case in a public career in these United States of a person in which plaiiititl' and defendant alike more required a Judge. Download or read book The Dramatic Works of John Webster Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint written by John Webster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of John Webster, Vol. 1 of 4 There are scarcely any known materials of which to frame even an outline of the biography of John Webster. We know not where he was born, nor, precisely, when; but there is an entry in the register of the parish church of St. Leonard's, Shoreditch - "Married: John Webster and Isabell Sutton, 25 July, 1590," - which Mr. Collier, an author by no means used to jump to conclusions, identrifies with our poet, adding: "our principal reason for thinking that it may refer to him is, that elsewhere in the register he is sometimes called merchant-tailor, a description he himself assumed." Alice, the daughter of this pair, was baptized at St. Leonard's, 9th May, 1606. Gildon, in his Lives of the Poets, tells us that Webster was clerk of the parish of St. Andrew's, Holborn; and as Gildon's book was published in 1698 - conjecturally, but half a century after Webster's death - he may have proceeded upon valid information in his statement. Download or read book The Dramatic Works of John Webster Vol 4 of 4 Classic Reprint written by John Webster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of John Webster, Vol. 4 of 4 This play, although not printed till 1661, when, as narrated in the General Introduction to these volumes, Mr. Kirkman published it, must have been acted many years before that time, and before 1649. The story, as summarized by Mr. Genest, runs thus: - "Lessingham is in love with Clare; she sends him a letter, in which she says, 'Prove all thy friends, find out the best and nearest, Kill for my sake that friend that loves thee dearest.' Lessingham debates the matter in a soliloquy; he tells four of his friends that he has a duel on his hands, and that he wants a second, who is himself to fight: they decline his proposal, under various pretences. Bonvile agrees to accompany him to the appointed place, notwithstanding that it is his wedding-day. When they arrive at Calais Sands, Lessingham tells Bonvile that he is come thither on purpose to kill him. Bonvile refuses to fight him, and adds, that he may boast to Clare that he has killed his friend, as all friendship between them is dead. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Webster's Speeches at Buffalo, Syracuse, and Albany, May, 1851 I have already stated, gentlemen, what your Observation of these things must have taught you. I will only recur to the subject for a moment, for the purpose of persuading you, as public men and private men, as good men and patriotic men, that you ought, to the extent of your ability and influence, to see to it, that such laws are established and maintained as shall keep you, and the South, and the West, and all the country together, as far as it is just and right, and as far as the Constitution demands. I say, that what is demanded of us is, to be up to our constitutional duties, and to do for the South what the South have a right to demand. Gentlemen, I have been some time before the public. My character is known, my life is before the country. I profess to love liberty as much as any man living; but I profess to love American liberty, that liberty which is secured to the country by the Constitution under which we live and I have no great Opinion of that other and higher liberty which goes over the restraints of law and Of the Constitution. I hold the Constitution Of the Uni ted States to be the bulwark, the only bulwark, Of Our liberties and of our national union. I do not mean that you should become slaves under the Constitution. That is not American liberty. That is not the liberty of the Union for which our fathers fought, that liberty which has given us a right to be known and respected all over the world. I mean only to say, that I am for Constitutional Liberty. It is enough for me to be as free as the Constitution of the country makes me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turning of Griggsby: Being a Story of Keeping Up With Dan'l Webster Well I remember how, when he had ceased, the people were still for half a moment dreading to break the spell. Sud denly they were like a sea in a wind, al though many held their places and were loath to go, and lingered awhile talking of the speech, and I among them. And I saw the vast crowd slowly break and go drifting away by thousands, and I fancied that some Of the men held their heads a bit higher, and that certain Of those near me were trying the Websterian tone. Since then that tone and that manner have become as familiar as the flag. At the inn I heard much talk of the great man idle words which one may hear to this day and be none the wiser, but possibly much the worse for it.
