Book Beyond the Green Revolution

Download or read book Beyond the Green Revolution written by Kenneth Dahlberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is the result of an intellectual odyssey, began as an attempt to explore and map the environmental and cross-cultural dimensions of the continuing spread of the green revolution-that package of high-yielding varieties of grain, fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticides that constitutes the core of modern industrial agriculture. In the process of traversing the terrain of several intellectual traditions and cutting through various disciplinary forests and thickets, a number of striking observations were made-all leading to two sober ing conclusions. First, most intellectual maps dealing with agriculture fail to recognize it as the basic interface between human societies and their environment. Because of this, they are little better than the "flat earth" maps of earlier centuries in helping to understand global realities. Second, when agriculture is analyzed from a global perspec tive that takes evolution seriously, one sees that the ecological risks as well as the energy and social costs of modern industrial agriculture make it largely inappropriate for developing countries. Beyond that, one can see a great need within industrialized countries to develop less costly, less risky, and more sustainable agricultural alternatives. Early in the journey it became clear that conventional disciplinary approaches were inadequate to comprehend the scope and diversity of global agriculture and that a new multilevel approach was needed. It also became clear that any new approach would have to try to correct certain Western biases and blind spots.

Book The Art of Stealing Time

Download or read book The Art of Stealing Time written by Louis Andriessen and published by ARC Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch composer, Louis Andriessen, has been writing and talking about his own work and everything which is directly, indirectly, or nothing at all to do with it, for many years now and The Art of Stealing Time is a collection of these articles, lectures and interviews. Andriessen talks about his childhood memories, his literary and cinematic preferences, colleagues he admires and ensembles he has established. He also talks about his own work, from De Staat [The Republic], the piece with which, twenty-five years ago, he changed the face of the musical landscape in the Netherlands up to and including the last opera he created with Peter Greenaway, Writing to Vermeer. Andriessen's style is informal, direct and always engaging, and through his use of anecdote, he is able to convey complex ideas to the widest of audiences, musicians and non-musicians alike. Controversial, funny, stimulating and thought-provoking, The Art of Stealing Time gives us a unique insight into the mind and working methods of one of the most significant composers alive today. This is, without doubt, a book to return to again and again.

Download or read book Louis Andriessen De Staat written by Robert Adlington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Andriessen is one of the foremost composers in the world today. His music, with its distinctive blend of jazz, minimalism, Stravinsky and the European avant-garde, has attracted wide audiences internationally and made him a sought-after teacher among younger generations of composers. De Staat ('The Republic') brought Andriessen to international attention in 1976, and it remains his best-known work. This book is the first extended, single-author study of Andriessen in any language. It opens with a detailed account of Andriessen's involvement in the political upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s which formed the basis for his later views on instrumentation and musical style. The following chapters assess the principal influences on his music and the musical structure of De Staat. The book closes with an extensive discussion of the meaning of De Staat in the light of the composer's firmly held socio-political views. The downloadable resources include a thrilling live recording of De Staat from the 1978 Holland Festival, plus two earlier works not previously commercially available on compact disc - De Volharding and Il Principe.
