Book Here Comes the Fun

Download or read book Here Comes the Fun written by Ben Aitken and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEW BOOK FROM THE MUCH-LOVED AUTHOR OF THE GRAN TOUR, A CHIP SHOP IN POZNAN AND THE MARMALADE DIARIES Food fights, fishing and French cooking - bestselling author Ben Aitken's year of actively pursuing fun Ben Aitken wasn't getting enough. He knew it and so did everyone else. He was grumpy, increasingly boring, mostly joyless. So, he joined a lawn bowls club. A week later, he doubled down on the doldrums by learning to dance like they do in Bollywood. Then - with an almost entirely reformed selfhood winking appealingly just around the corner - he started swimming in cold water and was back to square one. Despite the setbacks (and hyperventilation), it was becoming clear to him that the very pursuit of fun was a great way of not feeling naff. And so he made a vow to have as much of the f-stuff as he possibly could. Taking a liberal approach to the subject, he sought out things that he used to find fun a long time ago (i.e. food fights and wrestling); things that he'd never done before but reckoned could be fun (boozy French cooking classes, tantric sex); things whose fun-factor was less obvious and more down to earth (nostalgia, volunteering, edible gardening, watching chickens); and things that he wasn't at all sure about but were fun according to other people (gym classes, caving, TikTok). Unsurprisingly, the results were mixed, but he was undoubtedly left feeling ... better. Which left him asking, if fun is the finest medicine, why do we stop doing it?

Book The Clause in English

Download or read book The Clause in English written by Peter Collins and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus in this volume is on grammatical aspects of the clause in English, presenting a fine balance between theoretically- and descriptively-oriented approaches. Some authors investigate the status and properties of 'minor' or 'fringe' constructions, including 'deictic-presentationals'; non-restrictive relative clauses with that; 'isolated if-clauses', and 'exceptional clauses'. In some articles the validity of conventional accounts and approaches is questioned: such as traditional constituency trees and labelled bracketings as a means of representing relationships between parenthetical elements and their 'hosts'; or traditional morphophonemic analyses as explanations for Ross's 'doubl-ing' constraint. While some authors question commonly made assumptions (for example those concerning the relationships of clauses to sentences and propositions; or those concerning the status of post-head dependents in the NP), others appeal to new frameworks (for instance 'emergence theory' is used as a source of inspiration in dealing with 'intransitive prepositions'). This collection also includes articles that adopt a solidly corpus-based approach. The Clause in English has been prepared by colleagues past and present, friends and admirers of Rodney Huddleston, in order to honour his consistently outstanding contribution to grammatical theory and description.

As the author tries to escape from her pain and from the effects of child abuse through drugs and drinking, she finds herself lost—feeling unworthy and alone. Depressed and suicidal, she tries running away from the torture and from the memories of sexual abuse. While she tries to run away from her pain, she finds a seemingly endless amount of trouble to get into. Her journey takes you through Ecuador, Cuba, Mexico, and Canada on her search for love. Through her prose, journals, and poems, she speaks her innermost private thoughts—her true feelings of child abuse and suicide become open. She is the voice for all the ones who cannot speak as she clearly expresses her deepest emotions. This is a memoir that is serious, yet it is entertaining and funny. In this story, the author reveals how she finds her way out of the dark night and into the sun, showing you how to get help and find peace.
