Book excerpt: About the Book In the thrilling continuation of the Fate series, Patsy Garcia is now in hiding after the Nuestra Familia gang ordered her execution for ratting them out to the police. For nearly six years she has been in hiding, with the daughter she and Sergio, the leader of the Nuestra, created all those years ago. During the COVID pandemic, the La Familia’s search stalled, but never stopped. Thinking the danger has passed, Patsy enrolls Alicea in school in a remote, rural town far away. But this only leads La Familia to discover their location, and mother and daughter must make a harrowing escape with the aid of the Cowboy Cop, Chuck Reynolds. As the three are on the run, they are guided and protected by Blanca, a Guardian Angel assigned to Patsy and Alicea, and their devoted family and friends. Only through resourcefulness, strength, faith, and a sprinkling of miracles will they survive, and live the peaceful lives they’ve only ever imagined. About the Author Debra Ann Ristau is a historian at heart who believes nonfiction should be truthful and fiction should inspire, intrigue, and entertain. She hopes the Fate series does all three. After decades of writing nonfiction, she is thrilled to offer this book as the second of an exciting series. To learn more, visit debraannristau.com.

Book excerpt: The term El Niño (Spanish for "the Christ Child") was originally used by fishermen along the coasts of Ecuador and Peru to refer to a warm ocean current that typically appears around Christmastime and lasts for several months. Fish are less abundant during these warm intervals, yet in some years, however, the water is especially warm and the break in the fishing season persists into May or even June. El Niño also brings heavy rains. During the past 40 years, nine El Niños have affected the South American coast. Most of them raised water temperatures not only along the coast, but also at the Galapagos islands and in a belt stretching 5000 miles across the equatorial Pacific. The weaker events raised sea temperatures only by one to two degrees Fahrenheit, but the strong ones, like the El Niño of 1982-83, left an imprint, not only upon the local weather and marine life, but also on climatic conditions around the globe. This book includes a detailed overview and bibliography with complete title, author and subject indexes.

Book Sources of Power

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manfred Weissenbacher
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2009-09-30
  • ISBN : 0313356270
  • Pages : 940 pages

Download or read book Sources of Power written by Manfred Weissenbacher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark book rolls out a bold, new, energy-based theory of human history based on a simple, yet powerful law: whoever controls the world's effective energy supplies during a given energy age will inevitably dominate the economic, political, and cultural history of that age. The innovative theory articulated in Sources of Power: How Energy Forges Human History parses history into four ages: the foraging, agriculture, coal, and oil ages, each defined by the dominant source of power. Manfred Weissenbacher tests this sweeping theory against the panorama of world history, combining formidable powers of synthesis with a specialist's deep understanding of energy systems and technologies. After proving the operation of his law through history and into the present, Weissenbacher applies it to global geopolitical trends. He assesses the prospects of the various candidate technologies to succeed oil and charts future scenarios based on the distribution of energy reserves. Finally, he forecasts the fates of the American and Chinese empires in the twilight of the oil age: the United States as a mature superpower forced to deploy military might to occupy oilfields in the Middle East; China as an emerging superpower forced to deploy economic might to muscle in on the development of Third World oilfields.

Book El Ni o Southern Oscillation in a Changing Climate

Download or read book El Ni o Southern Oscillation in a Changing Climate written by Michael J. McPhaden and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and up-to-date information on Earth’s most dominant year-to-year climate variation The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Pacific Ocean has major worldwide social and economic consequences through its global scale effects on atmospheric and oceanic circulation, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and other natural systems. Ongoing climate change is projected to significantly alter ENSO's dynamics and impacts. El Niño Southern Oscillation in a Changing Climate presents the latest theories, models, and observations, and explores the challenges of forecasting ENSO as the climate continues to change. Volume highlights include: Historical background on ENSO and its societal consequences Review of key El Niño (ENSO warm phase) and La Niña (ENSO cold phase) characteristics Mathematical description of the underlying physical processes that generate ENSO variations Conceptual framework for understanding ENSO changes on decadal and longer time scales, including the response to greenhouse gas forcing ENSO impacts on extreme ocean, weather, and climate events, including tropical cyclones, and how ENSO affects fisheries and the global carbon cycle Advances in modeling, paleo-reconstructions, and operational climate forecasting Future projections of ENSO and its impacts Factors influencing ENSO events, such as inter-basin climate interactions and volcanic eruptions The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Find out more about this book from this Q&A with the editors.

Book La Ni a and Its Impacts

Download or read book La Ni a and Its Impacts written by Michael H. Glantz and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on a meeting of researchers, forecasters, and users of La Nina forecasts, at the US National Centre for Atmospheric Research. La Nina results from air-sea interaction that reduces the surface seatemperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, affecting global weather patterns. While people around the globe have become familiar with El Nino - a large-scale warming of surface water that expands to cover the tropics - and its impacts, its counterpart, La Nina, is not so well known. Researchers at this La Nina Summit indicated that La Nina events can be as devastating as those of El Nino. The overriding purpose of the summit was to draw attention to the importance of improving understanding of the La Nina phenomenon and what societies need to know in order to prepare for La Nina's impacts.
