Download or read book Herder s Relation to the Aesthetic Theory of His Time written by Malcolm Howard Dewey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herder's Relation to the Aesthetic Theory of His Time: A Contribution Based on the Fourth Critical Waldchen; A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy; Department of German In presenting in Part I a brief survey of aesthetic theory in the 18th century in France, England and Germany, the author has made no effort to cover the entire field. Selection has been prompted by the desire to bring into relief the leading ideas of those writers who were thought to be of especial moment at the time Herder composed the Fourth Waldchen (1769), a procedure which was deemed necessary for a better understanding of the particular purpose of the thesis. The Fourth Waldchen has been examined in Part II with particular reference to previous theory, since it offers what amounts to documentary evidence with regard to the conscious relationship in which Herder stood with his contemporaries and predecessors in this field. Within the work itself however Herder seems to abandon what is largely an eclectic attitude owing to the development of a new and original theory of art which occupied a large place in his future development. It has been possible at this point to indicate an interesting relationship which Diderot bears to this new theory. The present work is the outcome of special studies prepared for the Herder Seminars conducted by Professor Martin Schutze of the University of Chicago, to whom I am particularly grateful for many valuable suggestions. I wish to acknowledge indebtedness further to Professor William A. Nitze and Professor Edwin Preston Dargan of the University of Chicago whose lectures on French Criticism were excellent expositions of French theory. My thanks are likewise due Professor John M. Steadman of the Department of English and Professor Nolan A. Goodyear of the Department of Romance Languages, both of Emory University, for their criticisms and assistance in reading proofs. Book Selected Writings on Aesthetics

Download or read book Selected Writings on Aesthetics written by Johann Gottfried Herder and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-23 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal figure in the philosophy of history, culture, and language, Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803) also produced some of the most important and original works in the history of aesthetic theory. A student of Kant, he spent much of his life striving to reconcile the opposing poles of Enlightenment thought represented by his early mentors. His ideas influenced Hegel, Schleiermacher, Nietzsche, Dilthey, J. S. Mill, and Goethe. This book presents most of Herder's important writings on aesthetics, including the main sections of one of his major untranslated works, Kritische Wälder (Critical Forests). These notes, essays, and treatises, the majority of which appear here in English for the first time, show this idiosyncratic thinker both deeply rooted in the controversies of his day and pointing the way to future developments in aesthetics. Chosen to reflect the extent and diversity of Herder's concerns, the texts cover such topics as the psychology and physiology of aesthetic perception, the classification of the arts, taste, Shakespeare, the classical tradition, and the relationship between art and morality. Few thinkers have reflected so sensitively and productively on the cultural, historical, anthropological, ethical, and theological dimensions of art and the creative process. With this book, the importance of aesthetics to the evolution and texture of Herder's own thought, as well as his profound contribution to that discipline, comes fully into view.

Book The Development of German Aesthetic Theory from Kant to Schiller

Download or read book The Development of German Aesthetic Theory from Kant to Schiller written by Patrick Timothy Murray and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in English to provide a detailed philosophical study of Schiller's major work in aesthetics, the Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man (1795). The introduction surveys those books in English with chapters on the treatise and concludes with an outline of Kant's critical system and a summary of this theories of aesthetic judgment, art and beauty. The main body of the work consists of an exegesis of Schiller's text. In part one (Letters 1-9), we follow Schiller as he describes the afflictions of civilization and their cure. In part two (Letters 10-17), we follow Schiller as he considers the essential nature of man and beauty. In part three (Letters 18-27), we follow Schiller as he describes the psychological development of the individual and species from a sensuous to a rational condition, through the mediation of the aesthetic. The exposition is accompanied by assessment and criticism. The conclusion commences with a recapitulation of the main arguments in each Letter. This is followed by an evaluation of the Aesthetic Letters, identifying those specific theories of contemporary relevance, and with the potential for further theoretical development.

Book Theory of Society Volume 1

Download or read book Theory of Society Volume 1 written by Niklas Luhmann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of Niklas Luhmann's two-part final work was initially published in German in 1997. The culmination of his thirty-year theoretical project to reconceptualize sociology, it offers a comprehensive description of modern society on a scale not attempted since Talcott Parsons. Beginning with an account of the fluidity of meaning and the accordingly high improbability of successful communication, Luhmann analyzes a range of communicative media, including language, writing, the printing press, and electronic media as well as "success media," such as money, power, truth, and love, all of which structure this fluidity and make communication possible. An investigation into the ways in which social systems produce and reproduce themselves, the book asks what gives rise to functionally differentiated social systems, how they evolve, and how social movements, organizations, and patterns of interaction emerge. The advent of the computer and its networks, which trigger potentially far-reaching processes of restructuring, receive particular attention. A concluding chapter on the semantics of modern society's self-description bids farewell to the outdated theoretical approaches of "old Europe," that is, to ontological, holistic, ethical, and critical interpretations of society, and argues that concepts such as "the nation," "the subject," and "postmodernity" are vastly overrated. In their stead, "society"—long considered a suspicious term by sociologists, one open to all kinds of reification—is defined in purely operational terms. It is the always uncertain answer to the question of what comes next in all areas of communication.

Book Local Forest Management

Download or read book Local Forest Management written by David Stuart Edmunds and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2013 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A well written book, astutely organized.' Development and Change Local Forest Management is built around careful and illuminating case studies of the effects of devolution policies on the management of forests in several Asian countries. The studies demonstrate that devolution policies - contrary to the claims of governments - actually increased governmental control over the management of local resources and did so at lower cost. The controversial findings show that if local forest users are to exercise genuine control over forest management, they must be better represented in the processes of forming, implementing and evaluating devolution policies. In addition, the guiding principle for policy discussions should be to create sustainable livelihoods for local resource users, especially the poorest among them, rather than reducing the cost of government forest administration. This book is essential reading for forest and other natural resource managers, policy makers, development economists and forestry professionals and researchers.
