Book Stress physiology and forest productivity

Download or read book Stress physiology and forest productivity written by T.C. Hennessey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining or increasing stand productivity is the concern of forest land managers worldwide. Consequently, there is increasing interest in understanding the impact of environmental stress on productivity and the development of management strategies that ameliorate or reduce the deleterious effects. Invited scientists gathered in Fort Collins, Colorado on July 30, 1985, to present the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of environmental stress on forest stand productivity. Particular attention was given to elucidating the mode of action by which individual stress elements reduce productivity. Environmental factors and the levels that constitute stressed (suboptimal) conditions in forest stands were identified, and the effects of stress intensity and duration on key stand parameters, including photosynthesis, respiration, assimilate partitioning, senescence and mortality, were emphasized. The role of genetics and silvicultural treatments in lessening the stress impact on stand productivity was presented, particularly in regards to alternative methods for environmental stress management. Modeling of stand dynamics in response to environmental stress was explored as an effective research and management tool. VIII Improved forest management practices will develop as we improve our understanding of the nature of important environmental stresses and as we comprehend their impact on tree and stand performance, manifested through physiological processes and genetic potential. This book is dedicated to such an understanding and comprehension.

Book Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production

Download or read book Forest Vegetation Management for Conifer Production written by John Daniel Walstad and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1987 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing the work of an interdisciplinary team of 20 specialists, this text consolidates, for the first time, the information available on forest vegetation management and integrates this practice with other silvicultural considerations. It provides a conceptual framework as well as a database for improving forest vegetation management decisions. In an accurate and complete mannner, it quantifies opportunities for enhancing forest productivity, illustrates the value of vegetation management treatments in protecting forest resources and investments, outlines the concept of economic thresholds, highlights progress in establishing such limits and consolidates the information on treatment efficacy, advantages and disadvantages and tradeoffs involved. Forest managers will find it useful to evaluate silvicultural prescriptions and investment decisions; forest planners and resource specialists can use it as a reference source for preparing environmental impact assessments; and regulatory officials can use it to train and upgrade the skills of professionals.

Book Herbicides for Shrub and Weed Tree Control in Western Oregon

Download or read book Herbicides for Shrub and Weed Tree Control in Western Oregon written by H. Gratkowski and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbicides were tested on 16 common shrubs and weed trees during the past 24 years. The woody plants included snowbrush ceanothus, deerbrush ceanothus, mountain whitethorn, varnishleaf ceanothus, sprouting and nonsprouting forms of greenleaf manzanita, hairy manzanita, hoary manzanita, golden chinkapin, golden evergreenchinkapin, Saskatoon serviceberry, Pacific madrone, salmonberry, western thimbleberry, scrub tanoak, and canyon live oak. Chemicals tested included 2,4-D, dichlorprop, 2,4,5-T, silvex, 2,4-DB, amitrole, amitrole-T, 2,3,6-TBA, AMS, picloram, KreniteTM, triclopyr, and an experimental carbamate compound. Low volatile esters of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T proved the most effective and versatile herbicides for silvicultural use in western Oregon. Results of the screening tests are related to comparable data from small plot tests and project-scale aerial spray trials. To aid silviculturists, useful treatments and the most effective herbicide are shown in bold-face type for each shrub and weed tree.
