Book Come Let Us Reason Together

Download or read book Come Let Us Reason Together written by Fleur S. Houston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Oman (1860-1939) was one of the most original and profound theologian-philosophers of his generation. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, Houston traces the influences on Oman's Orkney childhood and his student days in Edinburgh University and the Divinity Hall of the United Presbyterian Church. She reviews Oman's subsequent publications during his ministry in Alnwick, and his influential career as professor of systematic theology and college principal at Westminster College, Cambridge. Houston describes the extent to which Oman's view of the world was challenged and affirmed by his experience of the First World War. Oman's theological and religious perspectives, summarized as "reverence, freedom, and sincerity," are rooted in the concerns of daily life. Oman's experiences and reflections are sure to stimulate, challenge, and inspire readers today as much as they did in his own time.

Book Subject to Others Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Subject to Others Routledge Revivals written by Moira Ferguson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, Subject to Others considers the intersection between late seventeenth- to early nineteenth-century British female writers and the colonial debate surrounding slavery and abolition. Beginning with an overview that sets the discussion in context, Moira Ferguson then chronicles writings by Anglo-Saxon women and one African-Caribbean ex-slave woman, from between 1670 and 1834, on the abolition of the slave trade and the emancipation of slaves. Through studying the writings of around thirty women in total, Ferguson concludes that white British women, as a result of their class position, religious affiliation and evolving conceptions of sexual difference, constructed a colonial discourse about Africans in general and slaves in particular. Crucially, the feminist propensity to align with anti-slavery activism helped to secure the political self-liberation of white British women. A fascinating and detailed text, this volume will be of particular interest to undergraduate students researching colonial British female writers, early feminist discourse, and the anti-slavery debate.

Book Philip of Spain and the Netherlands

Download or read book Philip of Spain and the Netherlands written by C.J. Cadoux and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philip of Spain and the Netherlands, C.J. Cadoux discusses the expression of moral judgements regarding leading figures in major historical events. Indeed, Cadoux, using the case of the Dutch Revolt, questions whether it is possible at all to assess moral quality without adequate knowledge of the relevant facts, at least. First published in 1947, Cadoux’s approach presents all history, whether national or personal, from a disinterested approach. This consistency of approach allows for a clear and concise depiction of events and persons that is not skewed by an overbearing opinion. He posits that in the great struggle between Spain and the Netherlands in the sixteenth century, a new ethic of Christian mercy is discernible. Cadoux concludes his book by asking the reader ‘in whose behaviour there can be seen some promise of better and humaner things?’, reinforcing the inherent difficulty that remains when passing moral judgement.
