Book The Dangers and Non disclosure of Herbal Supplement Use

Download or read book The Dangers and Non disclosure of Herbal Supplement Use written by Nichole Pelan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of herbal supplements in the United States is on the rise. People are using herbal supplements now, more than ever. When patients go to an emergency room, the use of herbal supplements, dietary supplements and non-prescription medications, is often not addressed. Many patients use herbal supplements with the understanding that herbal supplements are, safe, because the supplements are deemed, natural or organic. Patients are not educated enough on the dangers associated with herbal supplement use, especially in regards to interactions with some of the most common prescription medications, and some of the most common foods. The risk for interactions and deadly, adverse reactions are highly underestimated. Poly-pharmacy in the United States is a dangerous problem that patients are facing. Yet, not enough attention is given to poly-herbacy and the overuse, or under disclosure of herbal supplements. If a patient is asked upon triage into the emergency room, about their use of herbal supplements, education by the nurse to the patient, can be pivotal. By implementing a question directly onto the triage template that addresses the patient's use of herbal supplements, the doctors and nurses in the emergency department, can more effectively address the emergent concerns of the patient; especially if the emergent need is the result of medication interactions.
