A weekend party in a deceased rock star’s country mansion where the investigators are charged with surveilling the rich guests for dirt goes way out of control. A terrorist leader goes missing in London before he can turn himself in to the CIA and the agency is hired on the hush-hush to help track him down. Ravi’s efforts to avoid getting involved backfire and he finds himself in worse trouble than he could have imagined. And finally, Ravi’s boss’ secret plans to make himself a major player in the world stage blows up in everyone’s face and the investigators have to go into hiding. Forced to flee to the United States, an old client comes calling with a job Ravi and Julia can’t afford to turn down while the future of Golden Sentinels hangs in the balance. She could not, would not, believe that Remy Leverette was a murderer. There was too much good shining through in this man, who swore he had fled prison only to protect his beloved daughter. And whatever the danger, Dana could not betray him—or a love she knew would never set her free....

Cultural analysis is the basic methodological approach and recent concepts of captivity and fugitivity in Afro-pessimist and Black feminist theory form the theoretical framework.

Book An Enlarged Heart

Download or read book An Enlarged Heart written by Cynthia Zarin and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Enlarged Heart, the exquisitely written prose debut from prize-winning poet Cynthia Zarin, is a poignantly understated exploration of the author’s experiences with love, work, and the surprise of time’s passage. In these intertwined episodes from her New York world and beyond, she charts the shifting and complicated parameters of contemporary life and family in writing that feels nearly fictional in its richness of scene, dialogue, and mood. The writer herself is the marvelously rueful character at the center of these tales, at first a bewildered young woman, navigating the terrain of new jobs and borrowed apartments and the rapidly fading New York of people like Mr. Ferri, the Upper East Side tailor (“a wren of a man with pins flashing in his teeth”). By the end, whether Zarin is writing about vanished restaurants, her decades-long love affair with her collection of coats, a newlywed journey to Italy, a child’s illness, Mary McCarthy’s file cabinet, or the inner life of the New Yorker staff she knew as a young woman, this history of the heart shows us how persistent the past is in returning to us with entirely new lessons, and that there are some truths not even a tailor can alter.

Book Fugitive Heart

Download or read book Fugitive Heart written by Bonnie Dee and published by Samhain Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is always in the last place you’d think to look. Between her steady waitressing job and less-steady gigs designing websites, Ames Jensen is scraping together enough money to buy the old farmhouse that holds most of her most treasured childhood memories. When a complete stranger buys it right out from under her nose, she stomps over for a neighborly visit, prepared to dislike him on sight. Yet even after he nearly brains her with a shovel, she finds herself more attracted than alarmed. Falsely implicated for stealing from the Esposito crime family, Nick Ross is frantically in search of his supposed accomplice, Elliot Jensen, or at least the money and information the man took. Elliot’s hometown seems the perfect place to look—and the last place the Espositos will look for him. Elliot’s cute, vivacious sister is an unexpected mother lode of clues—and smoking-hot distraction. But when she does a little digging of her own, the truth threatens to send their love—and their lives—down in the crossfire. Warning: Contains a secretive man with a shady past and a woman from a small town where no one can keep a secret. If they fall in love, sneak a kiss or two, and have a little hot sex in a shabby farm house, well, it’s nobody’s business but their own.

Book The Fugitive in Flight

Download or read book The Fugitive in Flight written by Stanley Fish and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish (Florida International Univ.; emer., Univ. of Illinois, Chicago) "reads" The Fugitive, the mid-1960s television series, as a work of classic literature, teasing out moral and philosophical themes in various episodes. Examining such oppositions as inner truth versus outer appearance, individual independence versus community conformity, justice versus law, innocence versus justice, he depicts the series as capturing a shift in American culture. Fish defines the shift by quoting William Pfaff on the impact of shifting population and decline of the influence of churches. "Add to these developments," writes Fish, "the ideological efforts of liberals who contributed to the old America's demise by [to further quote Pfaff] attacking its values, despising its conformism and subordinating the demands of community to those of individual liberty." Fish argues that the series is similar to a theological text because of its "preoccupation with primary values," most primary among them freedom "in the moral sense ... freedom from attachments that own [one] and circumscribe [one's] will." The author contends that the "moral and philosophical significance" with which he has burdened The Fugitive was in fact intended by Roy Huggins, the creator of the series. This interesting, well-crafted interpretation of the series resonates with cultural significance. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. Book excerpt: The first in a trilogy of whip-smart novels—currently in development as a TV series set to star Sendhil Ramamurthy (NBC’s Heroes and Heroes Reborn)—about a destructive private investigator and his eccentric coworkers, who handle cases so high-profile that they never make the headlines. Ravi Chandra Singh is the last guy you’d expect to become a private detective. A failed religious scholar, he now works for Golden Sentinels, an upmarket London private investigations agency. His colleagues are a band of gleefully amoral and brilliant screw-ups: Ken and Clive, a pair of brutal ex-cops who are also a gay couple; Mark Chapman, a burned-out stoner hiding a great mind; Marcie Holder, a cheerful former publicist; Benjamin Lee, a techie prankster from South London; David Okri, an ambitious lawyer from a well-connected Nigerian immigrant family; and Olivia Wong, an upper-class Hong Kong financial analyst hiding her true skills as one of the most dangerous hackers in the world—all under the watchful eye of Roger Golden, wheeler-dealer extraordinaire, and his mysterious office manager, Cheryl Hughes. Thrust into a world where the rich, famous, and powerful hire him to solve their problems and wash their dirty laundry, Ravi finds himself in over his head with increasingly gonzo and complex cases – and the recent visions that he’s been having of Hindu gods aren’t helping. As Ravi struggles to stay ahead of danger, he wonders if the things he’s seeing are a delusion – or if he might, in fact, be an unrecognized shaman of the modern world...
