The handsome ambassador has already helped her escape Washington City. Now he's proposing marriage to protect her honor. Though she's losing her heart to Charles, Annabelle's certain his offer comes from duty, not love. Charles's feelings for the flaxen-haired beauty go beyond mere companionship, but he's doubtful a lady like Annabelle would ever consider him under normal circumstances. Book excerpt: Illicit Love is a history of love, sex, and marriage between Indigenous peoples and settler citizens at the heart of two settler colonial nations, the United States and Australia. Award-winning historian Ann McGrath illuminates interracial relationships from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century through stories of romance, courtship, and marriage between Indigenous peoples and colonizers in times of nation formation. The romantic relationships of well-known and ordinary interracial couples provide the backdrop against which McGrath discloses the “marital middle ground” that emerged as a primary threat to European colonial and racial supremacy in the Atlantic and Pacific Worlds from the Age of Revolution to the Progressive Era. These relationships include the controversial courtship between white, Connecticut-born Harriett Gold and southern Cherokee Elias Boudinot; the Australian missionary Ernest Gribble and his efforts to socially segregate the settler and aboriginal population, only to be overcome by his romantic impulses for an aboriginal woman, Jeannie; the irony of Cherokee leader John Ross’s marriage to a white woman, Mary Brian Stapler, despite his opposition to interracial marriages in the Cherokee Nation; and the efforts among ordinary people in the imperial borderlands of both the United States and Australia to circumvent laws barring interracial love, sex, and marriage. Illicit Love reveals how marriage itself was used by disparate parties for both empowerment and disempowerment and came to embody the contradictions of imperialism. A tour de force of settler colonial history, McGrath’s study demonstrates vividly how interracial relationships between Indigenous and colonizing peoples were more frequent and threatening to nation-states in the Atlantic and Pacific worlds than historians have previously acknowledged.

Book Defending Same Sex Marriage

Download or read book Defending Same Sex Marriage written by Martin Dupuis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-12-30 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we find ourselves at a crossroads of two powerful, unrelenting currents that are completely at odds with one another. The movement for legal recognition of same-sex unions has gone beyond the separate but equal status of civil unions to demand equality in marriage for all couples. Progress is being made on many fronts: mayoral action, clergy officiating at same-sex marriage and union ceremonies, state legislative responses, and street protests, to name a few. Meanwhile, opposition to same-sex marriage has also been gathering strength. The struggle is sure to continue unabated for some time to come, pitting those who believe in the traditional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman—and who seek to codify this belief in the U.S. Constitution—against those who find the basis for marriage between two loving, committed individuals not only in the history of our civil rights legislation and court decisions, but also in scripture and sacred religious traditions. Those who believe in extending to same-sex couples the 1,049 rights conferred by marriage as well as the supportive embrace of religious communities seek to strengthen the institution of marriage by making it inclusive and by passing laws and broadening doctrines to uphold marriage rights for all couples. This three-volume set clarifies the legal, political, religious, cultural, and social ramifications of same-sex marriage for gay and lesbian couples and their families and friends, and for the general public interested in the future of civil rights in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book " Through The Eyes of a Child," is a fictional side to the true story of the Cherokee Indians plight, being removed from their homeland in which they existed for centuries. The Cherokee Nation was forced from their homelands and this story tells how a small loving family dealt with the tragedy they would succumb to on this perilous journey. They travel through hazardous conditions. Through all the hardships of family loss, a young child, Little Bird grows from the wisdom taught from her grandmother and mother whose lives become joined with their Great Spirit. Little Bird becomes an icon of strength for her people. Filled with great wisdom and the knowledge of storytelling Little Bird gives the Cherokee Nation a perseverance of faith, and the ideal to never to give up. I have had many friends and family members who have constantly encouraged me to tell this story. The plight of this brave Cherokee Nation will always be remembered. In creating the character of Little Bird and her family I feel that I have given reality to this Trail of Tears that it deserves. I viewed myself as a member of the Cherokee People and wondered what it must have been like traveling so far each day, seeing hunger, disease, treacherous abuse, rape of women and children, these elements attacking this mighty people and watching so many people die before your eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We believe by blood only," said a Cherokee resident of Oklahoma, speaking to reporters in 2007 after voting in favor of the Cherokee Nation constitutional amendment limiting its membership. In an election that made headlines around the world, a majority of Cherokee voters chose to eject from their tribe the descendants of the African American freedmen Cherokee Indians had once enslaved. Because of the unique sovereign status of Indian nations in the United States, legal membership in an Indian nation can have real economic benefits. In addition to money, the issues brought forth in this election have racial and cultural roots going back before the Civil War. Race and the Cherokee Nation examines how leaders of the Cherokee Nation fostered a racial ideology through the regulation of interracial marriage. By defining and policing interracial sex, nineteenth-century Cherokee lawmakers preserved political sovereignty, delineated Cherokee identity, and established a social hierarchy. Moreover, Cherokee conceptions of race and what constituted interracial sex differed from those of blacks and whites. Moving beyond the usual black/white dichotomy, historian Fay A. Yarbrough places American Indian voices firmly at the center of the story, as well as contrasting African American conceptions and perspectives on interracial sex with those of Cherokee Indians. For American Indians, nineteenth-century relationships produced offspring that pushed racial and citizenship boundaries. Those boundaries continue to have an impact on the way individuals identify themselves and what legal rights they can claim today.

Now it’s like fate keeps throwing them—the two people least interested in romance—together at a resort that’s all about the love. Sparks are not supposed to happen, let alone the temptation to kiss each other senseless. But it’s one thing to get hooked on sizzling chemistry...and quite another to turn a sexy little fling into real life.
