Download or read book Hepatitis C in Renal Disease Hemodialysis and Transplantation written by J.M. Morales and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-23 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major health problem worldwide, with currently over 150 million HCV-infected people on the five continents. Although there have been important advances in the diagnosis, prevention and therapy, the infection remains an important health problem in most countries.HCV infection is considered a systemic disease: Not only does it affect the liver, it can induce autoimmune, dermatological and renal disease. Moreover, soon after the discovery of HCV as the major cause of non-A non-B hepatitis, HCV infection was recognized as an important cause and consequence of chronic kidney disease. The publication at hand is an update on the most important topics concerning HCV infection, renal disease and problems with dialysis in the general population as well as in renal transplant patients. Also included is a chapter on the emerging problem of renal complications associated with HCV virus in patients with HIV infection.Containing contributions from a panel of internationally acclaimed experts, this publication is a timely update on HCV infection and the kidney.

Book Hepatitis C Infection in Dialysis

Download or read book Hepatitis C Infection in Dialysis written by Magid A. Fahim and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Risk factors for HCV infection in dialysis patients include blood transfusion number, haemodialysis duration, dialysis unit HCV prevalence, prior kidney transplantation, intravenous drug use, male gender and older age. This book reviews the epidemiology of HCV in dialysis and discusses strategies for screening, transmission prevention, treatment and evaluation/management prior to kidney transplantation.

Book Guidelines on Hepatitis B and C Testing

Download or read book Guidelines on Hepatitis B and C Testing written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testing and diagnosis of hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infection is the gateway for access to both prevention and treatment services, and is a crucial component of an effective response to the hepatitis epidemic. Early identification of persons with chronic HBV or HCV infection enables them to receive the necessary care and treatment to prevent or delay progression of liver disease. Testing also provides an opportunity to link people to interventions to reduce transmission, through counselling on risk behaviors and provision of prevention commodities (such as sterile needles and syringes) and hepatitis B vaccination. These are the first WHO guidelines on testing for chronic HBV and HCV infection and complement published guidance by WHO on the prevention, care and treatment of chronic hepatitis C and hepatitis B infection. These guidelines outline the public health approach to strengthening and expanding current testing practices for HBV and HCV, and are intended for use across age groups and populations.

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2010-04-23

Download or read book Hepatitis and Liver Cancer written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-04-23 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global epidemic of hepatitis B and C is a serious public health problem. Hepatitis B and C are the major causes of chronic liver disease and liver cancer in the world. In the next 10 years, 150,000 people in the United States will die from liver disease or liver cancer associated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Today, between 800,000 and 1.4 million people in the United States have chronic hepatitis B and between 2.7 and 3.9 million have chronic hepatitis C. People most at risk for hepatitis B and C often are the least likely to have access to medical services. Reducing the rates of illness and death associated with these diseases will require greater awareness and knowledge among health care workers, improved identification of at-risk people, and improved access to medical care. Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable disease. Although federal public health officials recommend that all newborns, children, and at-risk adults receive the vaccine, about 46,000 new acute cases of the HBV infection emerge each year, including 1,000 in infants who acquire the infection during birth from their HBV-positive mothers. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C, which is transmitted by direct exposure to infectious blood. Hepatitis and Liver Cancer identifies missed opportunities related to the prevention and control of HBV and HCV infections. The book presents ways to reduce the numbers of new HBV and HCV infections and the morbidity and mortality related to chronic viral hepatitis. It identifies priorities for research, policy, and action geared toward federal, state, and local public health officials, stakeholder, and advocacy groups and professional organizations.

Book Treatment of Primary Glomerulonephritis

Download or read book Treatment of Primary Glomerulonephritis written by Claudio Ponticelli and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary glomerulonephritis is a common renal disease which may eventually lead to chronic renal failure. Treatment of glomerulonephritis is difficult. In particular the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive drugs require expertise, knowledge of the drugs, and careful monitoring of the patient. Paradoxically, the treatment of glomerulonephritis has become even more complicated in the recent years, after the introduction of a number of newer immunosuppressive drugs. Extensively updated since publication of the first edition in 1997, this comprehensive yet concise guide to the treatment of even the most complex patients with primary glomerular diseases is full of practical information collected and organized in an easy-to-read manner. It encompasses the possible treatments of the different types of primary glomerulonephritis, including diseases intrinsic to the kidney of unknown or uncertain aetiology. Each of the main chapters is devoted to a single primary glomerulonephritis and follows a similar format to allow easy access of information. The book contains not only an evidence-based review of the topic, but also practical recommendations from internationally recognized experts in the field.
