Book Hepatitis C From Pathophysiology to Disease Management

Download or read book Hepatitis C From Pathophysiology to Disease Management written by Ned Wright and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatitis C is a liver disease that is caused by the hepatitis C virus. People infected by the virus do not exhibit symptoms initially but occasionally dark urine, yellow tinged skin, fever and abdominal pain may occur. The infection can potentially lead to liver disease and cirrhosis. The hepatitis C virus is spread due to the use of poorly sterilized medical equipment, transfusions, blood-to-blood contact and needlestick injuries. It may also spread when an infected mother gives birth to her baby. There is no vaccination against hepatitis C. However, hepatitis C can be prevented using a combination of harm reduction strategies, including treatment of substance abuse, provision of new syringes and needles, and screening of blood donors. Chronic infection with hepatitis C can be cured with antiviral medications such as simeprevir or sofosbuvir. This book covers in detail the clinical aspects of hepatitis C from pathophysiology to disease management. It unravels the recent studies in hepatitis C. A number of latest researches have been included to keep the readers up-to-date with the global concepts in this area of study.

This has led to quantum advances in clinical efficacy and tolerability. Yet, in spite of this amazing progress, there remain obstacles to widespread successful treatment. These issues include biological failures even with direct-acting agents, lack of options for individual with organ failures, drug-drug interactions, access to medications either due to lack of availability or affordability, and psychiatric and social issues. These problems are likely to remain in the future. Therefore, this book has been created by distinguished faculties from around the world to address the progress in our understanding of HCV infection and to review new treatment options, limitations, and accessibility of new therapeutic options.

Book excerpt: Liver cirrhosis is a condition of the liver in which normal liver parenchyma is replaced by scar tissue, thereby causing long-term damage to the liver. It is always preceded by fatty liver and hepatitis. The disease progresses gradually over months or years. In its initial stages, there are often no symptoms, but as it progresses, symptoms such as tiredness, itchiness, swelling in the lower legs, yellow skin, spider-like blood vessels on the skin and fluid build up in the abdomen start to occur. Liver cirrhosis may lead to hepatic encephalopathy, liver cancer and bleeding from dilated stomach veins or from dilated veins in the esophagus. Cirrhosis may be caused by alcohol, hepatitis B and C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Though liver damage is irreversible, treatment can slow down the progression of the disease and reduce complications. Generally, antibiotics, laxatives, medications for hepatitis, chelation therapy, etc. may be prescribed depending on the underlying cause of the disease. This book provides comprehensive insights into liver cirrhosis. It provides significant information of the clinical aspects of liver cirrhosis from pathophysiology to disease management. It is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.

Download or read book Chronic Hepatitis C Virus written by Mitchell L. Shiffman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic Hepatitis C Virus: Lessons from the Past, Promise for the Future documents the monumental advances that have been made in our understanding of chronic HCV during the past decade. The first section reviews the natural history of chronic HCV, how this virus can affect other organs in addition to the liver, and whether treating chronic HCV alters the natural history of this disease. Section 2 reviews the advances that have been made in the treatment of chronic HCV during the past decade with interferon based therapy. Separate chapters on response guided therapy and how to manage the adverse events associated with these medications provide the physician with the concepts required to more effectively treat chronic HCV now and in the future. As the genetics of virologic response have recently been elucidated, a chapter is devoted to helping the clinician understand how genes that modulate disease processes and their treatment are identified and utilized in clinical care. Section 3 deals with the future of HCV treatment and specific inhibitors of HCV. Specific chapters explain how targets for drugs are identified and how drugs are then developed and tested; how mutations of HCV develop and how anti-viral agents will affect this process; the most up to date data regarding the treatment of chronic HCV with peginterferon, ribavirin and anti-viral agents; and the potential to treat chronic HCV with just oral anti-viral agents and without peginterferon and ribavirin in the future. The final section of this book covers issues related to liver transplantation in patients with chronic HCV. Separate chapters review the natural history of chronic HCV in liver transplant recipients and the impact of utilizing HCV positive donors. The volume concludes with chapters that cover the treatment of chronic HCV both prior to and after liver transplantation with potent anti-viral agents. Chronic Hepatitis C Virus: Lessons from the Past, Promise for the Future is a valuable resource for all physicians caring for patients with chronic HCV.
