This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Henry VIII has one of the fullest theatrical histories of any play in the Shakespeare canon, yet has been consistently misrepresented, both in performance and in criticism. This edition offers a new perspective on this ironic, multi-layered, collaborative play, revealing it as a complex meditation on the progress of Reformation which sees English life since Henry VIII's day as a series of bewildering changes in national and personal allegiance and represents 'history' as the product of varied and contradictory testimony. McMullan makes a powerful claim for the rehabilitation of Henry VIII, providing the fullest performance history of any edition to date and reading the work not as a marginal 'late' Shakespeare play but as a play which is paradigmatic of the achievement of Renaissance drama as a whole.`This is a staggeringly brilliant, captivating edition that will undoubtedly occasion a huge surge of critical interest in this neglected play. For those of use who have never taken Henry VIII very seriously ' perhaps dismissing it as a late collaborative play of no consequence or as conservative propaganda ' McMullan's introduction is genuinely revelatory.'Eric Rasmussen, University of Nevada at Reno, Shakespeare Survey.

Book The Complete Henry the Eighth

Download or read book The Complete Henry the Eighth written by Donald J. Richardson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its title, Henry the Eighth deals with three other, more important stories: the fall of Cardinal Wolsey, the fall of Queen Katherine, and the raising of Anne Bullen (Boleyn). For Elizabethans, the culmination of the play was, of course, the birth of Elizabeth, heralding their queen and her successor, James. Full treatment of Henry VIII would have to be dealt with by historians. The machinations of court life under Henry were to be continued under Elizabeth but, unlike her father, to much greater political success. James, unfortunately, is another story altogether.

Book excerpt: The authoritative edition of Henry VIII from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers. In Henry VIII, Shakespeare presents a monarchy in crisis. Noblemen battle with Lord Chancellor Cardinal Wolsey, who taxes the people to the point of rebellion. Witnesses whom Wolsey brings against the Duke of Buckingham claim he is conspiring to take the throne, yet Buckingham seems innocent as he goes to his death. Henry is also without a male heir. After meeting the beautiful Anne Boleyn, he says that he suspects his current marriage to Katherine, with whom he has one surviving daughter, is invalid. Katherine, meanwhile, glows with such splendid integrity that actresses have long desired the role. She advocates for the people, suspects the witnesses against Buckingham, and eloquently defends her conduct as Henry’s wife. A few masters, including Buckingham, enter; Buckingham is irate that Cardinal Wolsey has such capable impact over the ruler. Buckingham associates Wolsey with being goal-oriented and traitorous. Alternate rulers ask him to hush up about his words, however simply at that point, a monitor comes to capture Buckingham with the charge of treachery. He goes discreetly to imprison. The ruler and ruler go to a hearing in which Wolsey questions Buckingham's previous representative (the Surveyor) about his loyalties. This man pronounces that Buckingham fancied himself next in line to the honored position should the ruler kick the bucket without a beneficiary. Book excerpt: "King Henry the Eighth is a history play generally believed to be a collaboration between William Shakespeare and John Fletcher, based on the life of Henry VIII of England. The play implies, without stating it directly, that the treason charges against the Duke of Buckingham were false and trumped up; and it maintains a comparable ambiguity about other sensitive issues. The disgrace and beheading of Anne Boleyn (here spelled Bullen) is carefully avoided, and no indication of the succeeding four wives of Henry VIII can be found in the play. However, Catherine of Aragon's plea to Henry before the Legatine Court seems to have been taken straight from historical record."
