Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry V: The Typical Mediaeval Hero From the last chapter of the Vz'z'a we learn that the author was an intimate friend of John Somerset, a court physician under Henry VI., and an adherent of Duke Humphrey. The Vila is marred by its grandiloquent and turgid style but after the Germ fails us it becomes the leading authority on the Eng lish side. In its earlier portion it borrows much from the Gesm; afterwards the author had his own and his patrons' recollections to depend upon; he may also have been acquainted with an early edition of Monstrelet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry V: The Typical Mediaeval Hero This volume had its original in an article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography, but is founded on a fresh study of the chief authorities. If I cannot claim to have exhausted all sources of information, I have nevertheless sought throughout to base my narrative on chronicles and documents of contemporary, or nearly contemporary date. For few periods of our mediaeval history is there more abundant material. At least three lives of Henry V. were written within twenty years of his death. Of these the most valuable, so far as it extends, is the Gesta Regis Henrici Quinti, which was the work of a chaplain in the royal service. Mr. Williams, in his edition of the Gesta, suggested that the author was one Jean Bordin, a native of Aquitaine, who is known to have been present as one of Henry's chaplains in the campaign of Agincourt. This ascription is, however, purely conjectural, and Dr. Lenz has argued that in the Gesta we possess the genuine prose Life of Henry V. composed by Thomas Elmham, prior of Lenton. But we have no evidence that Elmham was ever in Henry's own service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Henry V Didactic Press Paperbacks

Download or read book Henry V Didactic Press Paperbacks written by Charles Kingsford and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the threefold task of the House of Lancaster: to recover prestige abroad, to restore peace at home, to re-establish order in the Church. For Henry of Bolingbroke the crown was to prove a thankless burden; but his labors were not in vain, and his son succeeded to the throne under happier auspices. Henry of Monmouth, deriving his inspiration from the past, was the champion of unity against the forces of disintegration. His aims were to govern England on the principles of the old constitutional monarchy as the chosen representative of his people's will; to maintain his country's place as a part in the whole society of the Western world; and for himself, as became a Christian King, to be the head and leader of a united Christendom.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author returns with a biography examining the dramatic life and unparalleled leadership of England's greatest medieval king Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.” For Dan Jones, Henry V is one of the most intriguing characters in all medieval history, but one of the hardest to pin down. He was a hardened, sometimes brutal warrior, yet he was also creative and artistic, with a bookish temperament. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family, but he always seemed to triumph when it mattered. As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions, and secured England’s borders; in foreign diplomacy, he made England a serious player once more. Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses. Henry V is a historical titan whose legacy has become a complicated one. To understand the man behind the legend, Jones first examines Henry’s years of apprenticeship, when he saw the downfall of one king and the turbulent reign of another. Upon his accession in 1413, he had already been politically and militarily active for years, and his extraordinary achievements as king would come shortly after, earning him an unparalleled historical reputation. Writing with his characteristic wit and style, Jones delivers a thrilling and unmissable life of England’s greatest king.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Henry V saw his reign and military efforts in France as a holy crusade to reclaim the French throne for his ancestors. Almost everything he did was governed by a well-thought-out philosophy that united political power, religious devotion and military success. This book includes the most up-to-date research on Henry V's reign, with a focus on historiography. His role in English history, as well as his actions as a ruler and military commander, are discussed throughout the text. This approach demonstrates how historians interact with a complicated academic literature that oscillates between hero worship and vilification of Henry. In the end, Henry V is measured by the standards of his day and was unquestionably a successful warrior king.
