Book Perspective in Shakespeare s English Histories

Download or read book Perspective in Shakespeare s English Histories written by Larry S. Champion and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry S. Champion examines Shakespeare's English history plays and describes the structural devices through which Shakespeare controls the audience's angle of vision and its response to the pattern of historical events. Champion observes the experimentation between stage worlds and the significance of a dramatic technique unique to the history play—one that combines the detachment of a documentary necessary for a broad intellectual view of history and the simultaneous engagement between character and spectator. Champion sees a conscious bifurcation occurring in Shakespeare's dramaturgy after Richard II. In Julius Caesar, Shakespeare continues to focus on the psychological analysis and internalized protagonist which lead to his major tragic achievements. In King John and Henry IV, the playwright develops a middle ground between the polarities of Henry VI, in which the flat, onedimensional characters essentially serve the purposes of the narrative, and the tragedies, in which the spectator's consuming interest is in the developing centralfigure whose critical moments they share. Champion sees Henry V as the culmination of Shakespeare's e fforts in the English history play.

Book The Philosopher s English King

Download or read book The Philosopher s English King written by Leon Harold Craig and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on Shakespeare's Henriad studies the tetralogy as a work of political thought. Leon Craig, author of two previous volumes on Shakespeare's political thought, argues that the four plays present Shakespeare's teaching on the question of who has the right to rule, one of the perennial questions of political philosophy. Offering original interpretations of each of the plays, Craig discusses divine right in Richard II, political upheaval and disputed rule in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and just rule in Henry V. In addition Craig shows how the four plays constitute one narrative -- starting in Richard II and concluding in Henry V -- telling the story of the making of a legitimate ruler, England's most famous warrior king, Henry V. The Philosopher's English King provides a meticulous account of Shakespeare's philosophy of legitimate rule, contributing to the burgeoning scholarship on Shakespeare as a political thinker and showing yet again that the poet deserves to be placed among the ranks of such political philosophers as Plato, Machiavelli, and Hobbes. Leon Craig is professor emeritus of political science at the University of Alberta.

Book The Role of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V

Download or read book The Role of the Chorus in Shakespeare s Henry V written by Andrea Oberheiden and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1-, Harvard University (Department of English), course: Shakespeare and Modern Culture, language: English, abstract: At first view, the Chorus in Shakespeare’s Henry V simply seems to serve two main practical purposes: to lead the audience through the play as regards content, and to form the audience's view on the character of King Henry V himself. The Chorus with his announcements, explanations, apologies, and appeals to the audience, while itself not being part of the diegetic world, underscores the assumption that the Chorus, represented by one single character, functions as a presenter of the play in general and of each act in particular with the rather practical aim to lead the audience through several changes of time and scene: "Carry them [the kings] here and there, jumping o’er times" (1.29). But understanding that as a reason or even as a justification for the existence of the Chorus in Henry V, the question has to be raised why a chorus, which is after all rarely used in Shakespeare’s other plays, is used specifically in this play. There are numerous Shakespearean plays in which a unifying authority would have been highly useful because of a complex structure of the particular play in regard to time and setting such as in Macbeth, King Lear, or The Merchant of Venice, to mention just a few.
