Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a traitor in the ranks of the Queen's Royal Artillery stationed in Kilkenny Ireland in the 1880's. It is Henry, the ten-year-old son of an officer who has been handing military secrets to the Irish. Cast out by his family, hunted by the military, and in constant danger, he is spirited away by his Irish friends to the lead mines in Glendalough, to work as a pit boy. The warmth and generosity of the Irish, their music and soft humour sustain Henry as he grows to maturity. Changing his name and immigrating to Australia as a young man, he finds his fortune through his connections to his employer in the goldmines and luxury hotels. He never sees his family again. Little does Henry know that his brother John has also relocated to Australia after living through the dangers of India's fight for independence. No one, not even their wives, know of their secret. Will the brothers ever meet again? What price will Henry pay for his rebellion? Margaret Gambold's bold saga is a riveting read that sweeps the reader to the 19th century-through revolutions, heartbreak and the height of Australia's Gold Wealth as two countries struggle to wrest free of British rule. Margaret Gambold is a writer and graphic/textile artist. She has conducted workshops in Australia and England for community groups, schools and aboriginal communities, and has organized exhibitions of their art. Her textile works have been displayed internationally. She lives with her family near Melbourne, Australia. Publisher's website: www.eloquentbooks.com/HenrysRebellion.html

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Pilgrimage of Grace for a short time Henry VIII lost control of the North of England and there was a very real possibility of civil war. Protesting against the king's betrayal of the 'old' religion, his new taxes, and his threat to the rights of landowners, the poor and the powerful united against their king and his henchman Thomas Cromwell, raising an army of 40,000.The leader of the Pilgrimage was the charismatic, heroic figure of Robert Aske, a lawyer. Under his influence and persuasion most of the Northern nobility joined the rebellion and gathered for battle at Doncaster where they would have outnumbered the king's soldiers by 4 to 1. But Aske had an unshakeable belief in justice and fair dealing, which was to prove his undoing. He was persuaded by the king's men to abandon military force and negotiate terms in London. Once there he was arrested, charged with treason and hanged in chains. Another 200 'pilgrims' were executed in the North as a 'fearful spectacle'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GENTLE READER: -Let me make you acquainted with my book, "Back Home." (Your right hand, Book, your right hand. Pity's sakes! How many times have I got to tell you that? Chest up and forward, shoulders back and down, and turn your toes out more.) It is a little book, Gentle Reader, but please don't let that prejudice you against it. The General Public, I know, likes to feel heft in its hand when it buys a book, but I had hoped that you were a peg or two above the General Public. That mythical being goes on a reading spree about every so often, and it selects a book which will probably last out the craving, a book which "it will be impossible to lay down, after it is once begun, until it is finished." (I quote from the standard book notice). A few hours later the following dialogue ensues: "Henry!" "Yes, dear." "Aren't you 'most done reading?" "Just as soon as I finish this chapter." A sigh and a long wait. "Henry!" "Yes, dear." "Did you lock the side-door?" No answer. "Henry! Did you?" "Did I what?" "Did you lock the side-door?" "In a minute now." "Yes, but did you?" "M-hm. I guess so." "'Guess so!' Did you lock that side-door? They got in at Hilliard's night before last and stole a bag of clothes-pins."
