Book excerpt: If you could choose the ideal companion for fishing the Henry's Fork, who would it be? No contest. It's Mike Lawson. As described by fellow angler and author of Meanderings of a Fly Fisherman, Seth Norman, Lawson was lucky enough to be born on the Henry's Fork, and clever enough to spend much of his life learning and loving the river. This makes the rest of us lucky to have him, and clever if we buy this book.Thirty years ago Lawson gave up teaching to own a fly shop and guide on Idaho's Henry's Fork River. Now he shares the knowledge and experience acquired in a lifetime spent on this premier fly fishing river. Directing you the along the river and its lakes, reservoirs, and tributaries, he will tell you where the fish are, how to fish them, and what flies to use. Mile by mile he will guide you through seasons, hatches, and species. And like any devoted angler, he will share a few big fish stories along the way.One man's lifetime and experience can make a difference. Whether you have already fished the Henry's Fork or simply plan to, Fly Fishing the Henry's Fork is the key to successfully enjoying the diversity that makes the Henry's Fork a unique fly-fishing challenge. Lawson's generous sharing of knowledge, combined with insights and expertise offered by fellow fly fisher Gary LaFontaine, will make your Henry's Fork trip the best that it can be.

Book Learning from the Water

Download or read book Learning from the Water written by Rene Harrop and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 90 fly patterns that will work east and west plus details on insects and the patterns developed to imitate them Photos by Bonnie and RenÃ(c) Harrop, Toshi Karita, Rich Paini, Masa Katsumata Original artwork by RenÃ(c) Harrop "In a lifetime nearing seven decades, I have devoted the vast majority of my time probing the mysteries of legendary waters like the Yellowstone, Firehole, Madison, Snake, and the Henry's Fork. Numerous lesser known rivers and lakes have cooled my legs but not my enthusiasm as I roam this region with a constant spirit of anticipation and discovery. In a single lifetime, it would be impossible to fish all the water in and near the park, and a close relationship with even a handful is a significant accomplishment." --RenÃ(c) Harrop, Learning from the Water RenÃ(c) Harrop records lessons learned from years fishing the world's toughest trout water. His home water, the Henry's Fork, is one of the most challenging spring creeks in the world, and over his lifetime fishing the Henry's Fork, he has developed legendary techniques and flies to meet the challenge. In Learning from the Water, RenÃ(c) shares his wisdom on the importance of insect stages, the flies for a successful fly box, and how to plan and prepare for a trip to unfamiliar water. Chapters on midges, caddis, Flavs, Callibaetis, Tricos, PMDs, hoppers, beetles, aquatic wasps, and Baetis give solid inside information on each of these important insects as well as the patterns RenÃ(c) uses to imitate them, patterns that inspire fly tiers the world over.

Book excerpt: Normal 0 Henry’s Lake is a large, high altitude (over 6,000-feet above sea level), Meadow Lake. Henry’s Lake is relatively shallow and at its deepest point is only 28-feet deep at full pond. Henry’s Lake contains many underwater springs and is probably one of Idaho’s most fertile trout lakes. Henry’s Lake has some of the best trout growth-rates of any lake in the world. Henry’s Lake contains Rainbow Trout, Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow X Cutthroat Trout hybrids and Brook Trout. Henry’s Lake is prolific with Scuds, Leaches, Mottled Sculpins (Cottus bairdi), Damsel Flies (Odonata), Early Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis tricaudatus) and Midges (Diptera / Chironomous). Henry’s Lake is 15-miles southwest of West Yellowstone, Montana off Highway 20. It lies in a basin on the southern flanks of the Continental Divide and is the headwaters of the famous Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. Mountains surround Henry’s Lake; to the north is the Madison Range, to the southwest the Centennial Mountains and on a clear day to the southeast one can see the Grand Tetons. Henry’s Lake has only one no-fee boat ramp, Bill Frome public boat ramp; which is located on the west side of Henry’s Lake. The southeast boat ramp is located at the Idaho State Park, which allows camping for a fee. There are two-private boat ramps that charge a fee to launch a boat; located on the north shore is Wild Rose boat ramp and camping and to the northwest is Staley Springs boat ramp and camping.

Book excerpt: Trout Bum is a fresh, contemporary look at fly fishing, and the way of life that grows out ofa passion for it. The people, the places, and the accoutrements that surround the sport make a fishing trip more than a set of tactics and techniques. John Gierach, a serious fisherman with a wry sense of humor, show us just how much more with his fishing stories and a unique look at the fly-fishing lifestyle. Trout Bum is really about why people fish as much as it is about how they fish, and it is ultimately about enduring values and about living in a harmony with our environment. Few books have had the impact on an entire generation that Trout Bum has had on the fly-fishing world. The wit, warmth, and the easy familiarity that John Gierach brings to us in Trout Bum is as fresh and engaging now was when it was first published twenty-five years ago. There's no telling how many anglers have quit their jobs and headed west after reading the first edition of this classic collection of fly-fishing essays.
