Book Henry of Guise Historical Novel

Download or read book Henry of Guise Historical Novel written by G. P. R. James and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical novel features the turbulent final days and the death of Henry I, Duke of Guise (1550-1588), who was a key figure in the French Wars of Religion between Catholics and Huguenots. In 1576 he founded the Catholic League to prevent the heir, King Henry of Navarre, head of the Huguenot movement, from succeeding to the French throne. A powerful opponent of the queen mother, Catherine de' Medici, he was assassinated by the bodyguards of her son, King Henry III in the conflict known as The War of the Three Henrys (1587-1589). The novel focuses, however, on the events from 12th of May, 1588, the famous day of the barricades, when the Duke of Guise had the crown of France within his grasp, and did not close his hand. Some have called it weakness, some virtue, some moderation, some indecision; and in fact, whatever view is taken of it, there are points in which it is opposed to the general character of the Duke, giving to these events a certain layer of mystery.

Book excerpt: My dear Scott, In dedicating to you the following work as the tribute of old friendship, and of sincere and well founded esteem, allow me to add a few words in explanation of the course I have pursued in the composition. I do this, it is true, more for the public than for yourself, as you were with me while it was in progress, and by your good judgment confirmed my opinion of the mode in which the subject ought to be treated. The character of every person who plays a prominent part on the great stage of the world is of course lauded by friends and decried by adversaries at the time, and the mingled report comes down to after ages. But the mists of prejudice are wafted away by the breath of years. The character of the historian is considered in connexion with those of the personages he has depicted; and allowances are made for errors and wrong views on all sides: the greater facts remain, in general, clear and distinct; and from these, together with those small traits which are rather let fall accidentally than recorded, by contemporaries, the estimate of history is formed.

Book Scourge of Henry VIII

Download or read book Scourge of Henry VIII written by Melanie Clegg and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The little-known story of the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots and her feud with the Tudors: “Will fascinate anyone who loves a simmering, twisting tale” (All About History). Mary, Queen of Scots continues to intrigue both historians and the general public—but the story of her mother, Marie de Guise, is much less well known. A political power in her own right, she was born into the powerful and ambitious Lorraine family, spending her formative years at the dazzling, licentious court of François I. Although briefly courted by Henry VIII, she instead married his nephew, James V of Scotland, in 1538. James’s premature death four years later left their six-day-old daughter, Mary, as queen, and presented Marie with the formidable challenge of winning the support of the Scottish people and protecting her daughter’s threatened birthright. Content until now to remain in the background and play the part of the obedient wife, Marie spent the next eighteen years effectively governing Scotland—devoting her considerable intellect, courage, and energy to safeguarding her daughter’s inheritance by using a deft mixture of cunning, charm, determination, and tolerance. This biography, from the author of Marie Antoinette: An Intimate History, tells the story and offers a fresh assessment of this most fascinating and underappreciated of sixteenth-century female rulers.

He doubted not for a moment, that if she were in the hands of the King, she was there against her own will; and could he, he asked himself, could he even hesitate to aid in delivering her from a situation of difficulty, danger, and distress? The thought of aiding her, the thought of seeing her again, the thought of hearing the sweet tones of that beloved voice, the thought of once more soothing and supporting her, all had their share; the very contemplation made his heart beat; and lifting his eyes, he found those of the Duke of Guise fixed upon his countenance, reading all the passing emotions, the shadows of which were brought across him by those thoughts. The colour mounted slightly into his cheek as he replied, "My Lord, I will do your bidding to the best of my ability. When shall I march?" "Oh, you mistake," said the Duke, laughing; "you are not to go at the head of your men, armed cap-à-pie, to deliver the damsel from the giant's castle; but in the quality of my envoy to Henry; first of all demanding, quietly and gently, where the Lady is, and then requiring him to[...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry of Guise: And Other Portraits So rapid was his advancement that the French nobles regarded him with dislike and alarm, and presently the King himself began to observe with grave misgiving the growing pride and wealth of his clever favourite. With the death of Francis 1. The public life of the first Duke of Guise came to an end. He knew that for those who had been closely connected with the old court there could be no place in the new, and as soon as the coronation rites were over he retired to his castle of Joinville,1 leaving his sons to carry on the building of the lofty structure whose foundations he had laid so well. He died in I 5 50, and was buried with royal honours as a king's son the draperies of the coffin were strewn with the double cross of Jerusalem, - fit emblem, said the preacher of the funeral sermon, of the double portion of Christian zeal which for generations past had distinguished the house of Lorraine.
