Download or read book Henry Box Brown written by Kathleen Chater and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Box Brown is well known in America for escaping slavery by being packed in a box and mailed from Virginia to Philadelphia. The passing of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 made it unsafe for Brown to remain in America. He relocated to England where he had a very successful career, initially as a speaker on abolitionism before he began speaking on other subjects and then branched out into other forms of entertainment, including magic. He married Jane Floyd, who, with their children, appeared in his acts. This book concentrates on the relatively unknown period of his life in Britain, detailing both how he was received and how he developed as a performer. It is the biography of a brave, intelligent individualist who was always willing to learn and to take chances, becoming the first black man to achieve landmarks in British law and entertainment.

It’s not until he sees his first ice dancing performance that Henry realizes there’s something he can do on the ice that doesn’t involve boarding and body checking. Henry is ready to hang up his gear and try on some figure skates, but first he has to convince his hockey-obsessed family to let him follow his own path.

Download or read book Literary Names written by Alastair Fowler and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do authors use pseudonyms and pen-names, or ingeniously hide names in their work with acrostics and anagrams? How has the range of permissible given names changed and how is this reflected in literature? Why do some characters remain mysteriously nameless? In this rich and learned book, Alastair Fowler explores the use of names in literature of all periods - primarily English but also Latin, Greek, French, and Italian - casting an unusual and rewarding light on the work of literature itself. He traces the history of names through Homer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Thackeray, Dickens, Joyce, and Nabokov, showing how names often turn out to be the thematic focus. Fowler shows that the associations of names, at first limited, become increasingly salient and sophisticated as literature itself develops.
Download or read book The Postethnic Literary written by Florian Sedlmeier and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the discursive and theoretical conditions for conceptualizing the postethnic literary. It historicizes US multicultural and postcolonial studies as institutionalized discursive formations, which constitute a paratext that regulates the reception of literary texts according to the paradigm of representativeness. Rather than following that paradigm, the study offers an alternative framework by rereading contemporary literary texts for their investment in literary form. By means of self-reflective intermedial transpositions, the writings of Sherman Alexie, Chang-rae Lee, and Jamaica Kincaid insist upon a differentiation between the representation of cultural sign systems or subject positions and the dramatization of individual gestures of authorship. As such, they form a postethnic literary constellation, further probed in the epilogue of the study focused on Dave Eggers.

Book excerpt: In 1965 a Soviet emissary was sent to Memphis, Tennessee, to create social anarchy by exploiting the civil rights movement and fund the war in Southeast Asia through the sale of drugs. During a civil rights march from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi, the communist agent meets Trifecta Johnson, a black teenager who is chosen to be one of the students to integrate the oldest white high school in Memphis. Trifecta lives in one of the citys roughest housing projects with his grandmother and two antagonistic cousins. All three boys have been abandoned by their mothers. The South Memphis ghetto is controlled by a street thug called The Mayor, who sells drugs at the corner of Mississippi Boulevard and Walker Avenue. With racial tensions mounting due to the integration of the citys high schools, a retired newspaper reporter challenges Henry Murphy, a less-than-stellar white student at Central High School, to write socially significant articles for the school newspaper. Henry, impassioned by his mentors encouragement, writes so honestly about the chaotic world around him that his work, especially what doesnt get published, causes him to lose his girlfriend, get suspended from school, become a person of interest to the FBI, fight with Trifecta, and befriend the only hippie girl at his conservative school. For Henry and Trifecta, the irrepressible social pressures to survive integration during the racially volatile garbage strike that will forever change the face of the city and the civil rights movement bring them together, move them to sacrifice, and ultimately force them from their adolescent oblivion.
