Download or read book A World at War 1911 1949 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A World At War, 1911-1949, leading and emerging scholars of the cultural history of the two world wars begin to break down the traditional barriers between the historiographies of the two conflicts, identifying commonalities as well as casting new light on each as part of a broader mission, in honour of Professor John Horne, to expand the boundaries of academic exploration of warfare in the 20th century. Utilizing techniques and approaches developed by cultural historians of the First World War, this volume showcases and explores four crucial themes relating to the socio-cultural attributes and representation of war that cut across both the First and Second World Wars: cultural mobilization, the nature and depiction of combat, the experience of civilians under fire, and the different meanings of victory and defeat. Contributors are: Annette Becker, Robert Dale, Alex Dowdall, Robert Gerwarth, John Horne, Tomás Irish, Heather Jones, Alan Kramer, Edward Madigan, Anthony McElligott, Michael S. Neiberg, John Paul Newman, Catriona Pennell, Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses, Daniel Todman, and Jay Winter. See inside the book.

Book Bauhaus Modernism and the Illustrated Book

Download or read book Bauhaus Modernism and the Illustrated Book written by Alan Bartram and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stimulating survey of how the Bauhaus and the modernist revolution have shaped graphic design. This lively and authoritative book explores the influence of the Bauhaus and modernism on typography and book design. Distinguished book designer and author Alan Bartram examines work by such key figures as Max Bill, F. T. Marinetti, El Lissitzky, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Jan Tschichold, and Paul Rand. All of the carefully chosen examples--some of which have not been previously reproduced--clearly demonstrate the modernist revolution that took place in graphic design. In an informative introductory essay, Bartram surveys the German art and design school known as the Bauhaus. Under Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus intended to create an academic, theoretical, and practical synthesis of all forms of visual expression--a marrying of art, architecture, industry, and design that had never been attempted before. Although the Bauhaus existed for only fourteen years, from 1920 to 1934, Bartram asserts that its philosophy influenced the appearance of almost every kind of modernist artifact throughout the twentieth century and continues to do so today. Engagingly written and handsomely illustrated, this volume is a valuable resource for designers and book lovers everywhere.

It provides a consolidated version of all the reference apparatus contained in each of the other volumes (index, concordance and list of exhibitions), enabling the user to track down any particular drawing from any period or volume by means of its title, HMF or AG number. In addition, this volume includes a list of Addenda and Corrigenda relating to information that has come to light since this series was launched in 1994. Some 150 items are included in this section. The opportunity has also been seized to catalog about 600 previously unpublished drawings produced by Moore in the last two years of his life (1984-86) and held in the archives of the Henry Moore Foundation. About fifty of these are illustrated and give a flavor of the fine quality of the artist's output even as he approached the end of his life.

Book excerpt: In a multi-disciplinary practice that encompasses sculpture, sound, film and performance, Leckey explores the potential of the human imagination to appropriate and to animate a concept, an object or an environment.Drawing on his personal experiences as a London-based artist, who spent his formative years in the north of England, Leckey returns frequently to the themes of desire and transformation.Leckey's fascination with the affective power of images is another recurring theme. Meticulously sourced and reconfigured archival footage is a predominant feature of some of his best-known works. Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999) is a seminal exploration of the history of underground dance culture in the UK from the mid- 1970s to the early 1990s.In the recent performance piece GreenScreenRefrigeratorAction (2010), Leckey sought to communicate the inner life of a 'smart' fridge one that keeps an electronic tally of its contents and to render audible its 'voice'.Included is an interview between the artist and Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist, and an extract from a script by Mark Leckey and Martin McGeown.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Mark Leckey: SEE, WE ASSEMBLE at Serpentine Gallery, London, May - June 2011.
