Williams and DeNillen," re "fifty seven bales of short staple cotton se[iz]ed by you on account of Daniel Blake, Esquire"; 2 February 1820, to John Quincy Adams, responding to a letter dated 17 January 1820; 3 September 1829, to the Honorable M[artin] Van Buren, re "the present war against Turkey"; and document, 23 October 1811, enstating Daniel James Ravenel as secretary of state of South Carolina.

Mrs. Hering mentions the forthcoming marriages of two Middleton sisters-in-law (Septima Sexta and Anna Louisa Middleton), news of weddings at Bath, a ball at Tyson with descriptions of gowns, jewels, and coiffures. The letter also refers to her daughter's approaching period of confinement before the birth of her son, John Izard Middleton (who was born on February 4, 1800).

Book excerpt: Middleton's letter to his brother-in-law Henry Izard in Charleston (S.C.) describes a visit with General [Andrew] Jackson and a conversation regarding Aaron Burr and his supposed intention to separate "the Western from the Atlantic states, or to possess himself of New Orleans," and the belief of some that "Wilkinson and himself were connected in a scheme to attack the Floridas and other Spanish possessions." Letter also discusses a bill to suspend the writ of habeas corpus and other political matters. Rutledge mentions that he will have to spend a week or so "a la bivouac, " and informs Izard of "the fate of old Arnold, " who embarked on a canoe trip up the [Tennessee River] "with two Indians and his dog" and soon afterwards died.
