Explains the difficult financial circumstances under which he is suffering, leading him to be unable to pay it within six months, as Frederic asked. Believes he will be able to repay it in the next year. Asks for Tudor's indulgence, based on their friendship, to allow him to renew the note for eighteen months. Knox refers to a previous letter he sent to Lincoln (see GLC02437.03446). Thanks him for his last letter, and believes his recent services to the government (by leading troops to suppress Shays' Rebellion) will prove beneficial. Writes, A Congress of seven States has been lately formed. Our old friend General [Arthur] St. Clair president. Nearly three months elapsed between the time Congress ought to have been and the time it was actually formed. Adds, I have written you an official letter respecting some troops I have ordered to Springfield. Discusses where these troops are currently stationed, and how they will arrive at Springfield. Urges him to keep your attention fixed on the Stores and to afford them as ample protection as your force will admit, and the case may require. Mentions the variety of rumors he has heard regarding the status of Lincoln's regiment, but has heard that Generals [Rufus] Putnam and [Benjamin] Tupper are with him and if so, sends his regards to them.

Relates that his note to Tudor was due 17 March. Reports that [Thomas?] Adams the printer informed him that the article in a North Carolina newspaper Knox was asking about was inclosed to him by a Gentleman from Pensylvania. Adams would not give the gentleman's name, nor confirm it came from Philadelphia. Jackson believes he can find out the name if Knox wishes to know. Refers Knox to William Bingham's letter about their land concern. Wants to go to Maine with Knox, and reminds him they are embarking from Portland now as a packet now runs regularly between there and Boston. Says I am anxious for your present situation but hope & pray for the best, you will let me know when all danger is over, that my mind may be releived from its present fears & apprehensions. Says he intends to visit a Public Exhibition of the Students at the Hingham Academy. Will see Henry Jackson Knox there who Henry Jackson refers to as my boy. Reports that the boy needs steadiness, but that he has improved upon his language, manners & deportment. Speaks highly of the boy and hopes he will continue where he is until he enters Harvard. Is very much against the boy going home for the summer. Continues letter on 1 April. Encloses correspondence he has had with Judge Sullivan. This will show Knox the situation they are in since they have not made the [Dollar sign]30,000 payment as their contract stipulates. Hopes Knox will consult Bingham on the subject. Reminds him the [Dollar sign]5,200 note is due 29 April.

Also discusses in great length Knox's time as a public servant and where his next place of residence should be. Advises Knox to keep his children close until they marry and suggests which schools Henry [Jackson Knox] should attend. Also warns Knox about the public view of Knox's spending habits and borrowing. Comments Knox made the right choice in choosing to retire from public service and he should leave Philadelphia immediately. Also warns Knox not to partake in any politics against England, France, or any other powers and to always turn his back to tyranny. Discusses his finances, future job outlooks, and being indebt to Knox. Speaks of looking for work and seeks Knox's advice in the area he should enter. Notes he does not have the talents nor inclination to acquire great wealth and asks Knox to advice him as a free man and not his brother who is indebted to Knox. Also begs Knox not to assign him the responsibility of managing Knox's large holdings in the Eastern lands. Letter has a note at the top of page five that appears to have been added later in pencil.
