The docket, also in Knox's hand, says that a copy of this draft was never sent to Lincoln, but a later version, dated 9 May, was sent, and no copy was retained of that. Writes that he received Lincoln's last letter, and has every day planned to write back, but hasn't until now, and is ashamed of it. Regarding Lincoln's letter, Knox declares that canals are a favorite hobby of his, and he discusses the merits of the canal proposal in Lincoln's letter. Has ordered the plans from his earlier canal project to be sent to Boston, so Lincoln or another of the canal planners might see them. Mentions some of the pitfalls and difficulties of planning a canal. Adds that he appreciates Lincoln's invitation for him to be an associate in the canal project. Responds that at present his attentions are consumed with land purchases in Maine, but when he has more leisure time, he would be happy to help. See GLC02437.06690 for a related document.

Knox, Commander at West Point, writes to Lincoln, Secretary of War, apparently regarding the settlement of the Newburgh Conspiracy. Knox remarks, I most earnestly conjure you to urge, that every thing respecting the Army be decided upon before peace takes place. That events must be certain, therefore no time ought to be lost. The Army are anxiously waiting the result of General [Alexander] McDougalls mission... if they should be disbanded previous to a settlement, without knowing who to look to, for an adjustment of accounts... they will be so deeply stung by the injustice and ingratitude of their country as to become its Tygers and wolves. A note at the bottom of the page indicates that, as of 1853, Reverend R. C. Waterston (possibly Robert Cassie Waterston) of Boston possessed the original letter.

To Secretary of War Lincoln. Says with the confirmation of peace the artillery artificers are worried about disbanding before hearing from Congress about a payment settlement for their past services. Says he wrote to Lincoln about this issue previously and asked him to bring it before Congress. Says it being but reasonable that their stipulated pay, of twenty dollars a per month to the privates and in proportion for the noncommissioned officers, should be made good to them. Hopes Lincoln will use his influence to get a decision from Congress as soon as possible.

Knox had planned to travel to New England by way of Albany, New York, so he could see Lincoln and Benedict Arnold, but his late departure will prevent him from taking that route. Comments on Lincoln's recovery (his leg was badly injured during the Saratoga campaign in 1777). Congratulates Lincoln on the victory at Saratoga, New York: The success with which your exertions have been crowned, and the ample security it affords at present to this and the neighboring states must be a pleasing reflection in your pain and confinement. Relates that George Washington has ordered him (Knox) to transfer cannons from Albany, New York to Pennsylvania. Remarks that George Clinton, Governor of New York, suggested to Knox that the cannons be transported by water after the ice melts. Notes that if Lincoln is not well enough to travel to Boston in six weeks, Knox will travel through Albany to see him.
