Van dyke was spent in his father's country home; and there he conceived that love for rural life and occupations which continued throughout his career, making him long for the green fields even while he dwelt in cities. The marked traits in his boyish person ality were physical courage and religious earnest ness. There was nothing that he loved more than to ride his father's wildest horse, bare-backed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Van Dyke Book: Selected From the Writings of Henry Van Dyke Again, I recall an amusing and characteristic pic ture of Doctor van Dyke at the time when we, our selves, were entering the war. I had gone to him for his advice as to what branch of military service I should enter. Logically, and with his accustomed directness, his first words were: As you are well above the draft age, and the support of a growing family, you cannot, of course, think of any very dan gerous branch A few weeks later I came across him in the uniform of a lieutenant-commander in the navy. With the eagerness of a boy, and with a boy's flushed cheeks, he told me that not only had he been commissioned, but had, by dint of pertinacity on his part, I imagine, been promised a post, whenever pos sible, in one of the ships in the first line of battle. I am glad to say that the war ended before he got this post. He, himself, was also beyond the draft age, and the head of a family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friendly Year: Chosen and Arranged From the Works of Henry Van Dyke, D. C. L. (Oxon;) The books of Henry van Dyke are well known to many classes of readers. He has worked in various literary forms: stories, essays, criticism, and poetry. The unity of his work is found in the individuality of a style marked by simplicity, clearness, and directness, and in the manifest influence of "a human aim, - to cheer, console, purify, or ennoble the life of the people." In making this little year-book of selections, the suggestion of which is entirely my own, I have not sought to illustrate literary qualities, so much as to bring out the dominant note of human friendliness and comradeship, which runs through the writings of an author who knows books well, but who cares more for people. I hereby express grateful appreciation of the kind courtesy of The Macmillan Company, Harper & Brothers, Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., and The Outlook Company, for permission to use their copyrighted material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Poems of Henry Van Dyke by Henry Van Dyke How long the echoes love to play Around the shore of silence, as a wave Retreating circles down the sand! One after one, with sweet delay, The mellow sounds that cliff and island gave, Have lingered in the crescent bay, Until, by lightest breezes fanned, They float far off beyond the dying day And leave it still as death. But hark, - Another singing breath Comes from the edge of dark; A note as clear and slow As falls from some enchanted bell, Or spirit, passing from the world below, That whispers back, Farewell. So in the heart, When, fading slowly down the past, Fond memories depart, And each that leaves it seems the last; Long after all the rest are flown, Returns a solitary tone, - The after-echo of departed years, - And touches all the soul to tears. 1871. DULCIORA A tear that trembles for a little whileUpon the trembling eyelid, till the worldWavers within its circle like a dream, Holds more of meaning in its narrow orbThan all the distant landscape that it blurs. A smile that hovers round a mouth beloved, Like the faint pulsing of the Northern Light, And grows in silence to an amber dawnBorn in the sweetest depths of trustful eyes, Is dearer to the soul than sun or star. A joy that falls into the hollow heartFrom some far-lifted height of love unseen, Unknown, makes a more perfect melodyThan hidden brooks that murmur in the dusk, Or fall athwart the cliff with wavering gleam. Ah, not or their own sake are earth and skyAnd the fair ministries of Nature dear, But as they set themselves unto the tuneThat fills our life; as light mysteriousFlows from within and glorifies the world. For so a common wayside blossom, touchedWith tender thought, assumes a grace more sweetThan crowns the royal lily of the South; And so a well-remembered perfume seemsThe breath of one who breathes in Paradise. 1872. THREE ALPINE SONNETS I THE GLACIER At dawn in silence moves the mighty stream, The silver-crested waves no murmur make; But far away the avalanches wakeThe rumbling echoes, dull as in a dream;Their momentary thunders, dying, seem To fall into the stillness, flake by flake, And leave the hollow air with naught to breakThe frozen spell of solitude supreme. At noon unnumbered rills begin to spring Beneath the burning sun, and all the wallsOf all the ocean-blue crevasses ring With liquid lyrics of their waterfalls; As if a poet's heart had felt the glowOf sovereign love, and song began to flow.
