Hopes his recovery will not be long, but advises him to take care of himself: it will be a good lesson to you, when you exercise, to do it with less violence. Discusses a visit by Captain [Thomas] Vose, in which he helped Vose to prepare to depart for the Waldo patent lands, so that Vose could work as an agent for Knox. Delivered a letter to Vose from Knox, and watched Vose and his family pack their belongings and depart on a ship. Vose seemed to feel happy about the arrangements they made. Mentions that Mr. [Theodore] Sedgwick has been elected to Congress, which pleases the Federalists, and adds that General [David] Cobb, also a Federalist, is Speaker of the House in Massachusetts. Has enclosed a letter from Constant Freeman in which he asks for help finding a job in the new government (see GLC02437.04223).

Discusses the election of the Vice President, and the desire of the people of Boston to support the Federal Government. Reports that he and Benjamin Hichborn are delayed in departing for their visit to New York because Hichborn must remain on the Supreme Court, which is still in session. Mentions that Captain [Thomas] Vose has not returned from the eastward yet, but has written friends that he likes his situation (as one of Knox's agents in the Waldo patent lands). Discusses his attempts to locate high quality fish. Sends his love to Lucy Knox and their children.

Book excerpt: Informs Knox that he, along with Mr. Whitmore and cousin Isaac, presumably Winslow, appeared before a committee chaired by John Gardner to discusses a report described in his last letter (dealing with a petition of Knox's in relation to the Waldo patent lands, see GLC02437.04500). The issue involved a resolve in 1785 where the years 1775 and 1785 were confused. Mentions the presence of Nathan Dane, Nathaniel Gorham, Knox's friend Ulmer from Duck Trap, among others. Jackson concludes the issue by stating that chairman Gardner told him that he was deceived by the men on the other side of the argument, Thomas and Brown, and he is now well informed - and you may rest assured they have damned themselves, and everything will be concluded to our wishes. Comments that tomorrow is the celebration of President George Washington's birthday. States that Mr. Hoffmann could not be persuaded to stay any longer and that if he (Jackson) was newly married, he would do the same.

Mentions that little Isaac (likely Isaac Winslow, Jr.) recently returned from the Eastward (likely the Waldo patent lands) and is very happy with the job Captain Thomas Vose is doing as their agent. Comments that the recent appointment of Colonel [Alexander] Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury pleases everyone in the Boston area and declares that Hamilton is a man of great ambition. Congratulates Knox on his reappointment to his old office. Adds that he may be in New York the following month, and sends his love to Mrs. Knox and their family.

When he is at liberty to leave, they will depart. Would also like to know when the President will arrive in New York, as he would like to be there with Knox at that time. Comments on the Waldo patent negotiations, and provides information on Isaac Winslow and Benjamin Hichborn.

Suggests Knox come on 15 September 1790 when the legislature will be in session. Says a Captain Mitchel from Ireland had arrived with news that impressment of seamen has almost stopped and the appearances of a War was nearly at an end. He then states, I am sorry for it. Also discusses Knox's recently negotiated treaty with the Creeks: Your Treaty with the Indians has given great satisfaction to all Class's of People in this quarter, particularly to your friends - for my own part I am highly delighted & gratified that you had the Sole conducting of this business.

Received a letter from Colonel Tyler on his tour of Knox's Maine lands. Says he will write you again respecting the conduct of some persons on the patent and the manner they are waisting [sic] and distroying [sic] your property. Wants to pay Tyler [Dollar sign]2 per day for his 52 days of work. Heard that Congress is bringing forward a new militia law. Wants Knox to keep him in mind for any appointments. Declares I am desirous of being in a permanent & respectable situation of fifteen hundred or a thousand dollars a year. Believes the federal government must divide the militia up into 4 grand divisions and appoint a Major General and a Deputy Adjutant General (with the rank of Brigadier General) to each. Also wants an A.D. General to reside at the seat of government. Wants the great officers appointed by the president and paid by the federal government, but the subordinate officers to be appointed and paid by the states. Says some such plan as this will give a respectable and efficient Militia - the present is only a rope of sand.

Encloses a letter from William Frost (not included). Frost is trying to collect money from Knox, and Jackson plans to wait for Knox's approval before paying him. Briefly describes George Washington's recent visit to Boston: The Presidents visit will make a lasting impression on the minds of the people in this quarter, and I can discover an alteration in the sentiments of a number who were fluctuating & uneasy previous to this event. The President must have arrived with you long before this and I am satisfied you will hear every particular that took place on his introduction to this City. Also writes, Many here are of opinion that an Indian War is inevitable. Some have gone so far as to begin to count on their share of the plunder of South America. Sends his regards to Lucy Knox and Catharine Greene.
