Thanks Knox for his promise respecting the appointment of Marshall. Jackson believes that another, unrelated Mr. Jackson will try to hold on to that appointment along with the other appointment he holds. Says, I have no fears in this head as the President will not approbate so great an impropriety as one man holding two Offices under the government. Goes on to discuss the issue of government appointments and the problem with choosing some men and leaving others out. Explains that were the Deputies appointed by the President, they would have some claim upon his patronage, but in the present case they have none. Knox is the only person that Jackson trusts with his request. Jackson would like to visit Knox but his mother would be greatly distressed.

Relates that his note to Tudor was due 17 March. Reports that [Thomas?] Adams the printer informed him that the article in a North Carolina newspaper Knox was asking about was inclosed to him by a Gentleman from Pensylvania. Adams would not give the gentleman's name, nor confirm it came from Philadelphia. Jackson believes he can find out the name if Knox wishes to know. Refers Knox to William Bingham's letter about their land concern. Wants to go to Maine with Knox, and reminds him they are embarking from Portland now as a packet now runs regularly between there and Boston. Says I am anxious for your present situation but hope & pray for the best, you will let me know when all danger is over, that my mind may be releived from its present fears & apprehensions. Says he intends to visit a Public Exhibition of the Students at the Hingham Academy. Will see Henry Jackson Knox there who Henry Jackson refers to as my boy. Reports that the boy needs steadiness, but that he has improved upon his language, manners & deportment. Speaks highly of the boy and hopes he will continue where he is until he enters Harvard. Is very much against the boy going home for the summer. Continues letter on 1 April. Encloses correspondence he has had with Judge Sullivan. This will show Knox the situation they are in since they have not made the [Dollar sign]30,000 payment as their contract stipulates. Hopes Knox will consult Bingham on the subject. Reminds him the [Dollar sign]5,200 note is due 29 April.

States, I believe but few are so well acquainted with the late Officers of the American Army as I am, and I do assure you, I should have been highly gratified to have assisted you in the late arrangement... Says he cannot account for [John] Doughty declining the appointment as Lt. Colonel Commander. (See GLC02437.04875 and .4891 for related documents.) Knox has asked Jackson how he feels about his position in the 2nd Regiment. Admits he exceedingly dislike[s] his situation but he does not believe that being Lieutenant Colonel Commander would make him any happier. Updates Knox on news from Boston and gives his opinion on various commanding officers such as Captain Nathaniel Stowe who commands a good ship but would leave her to have the command of a Company. Again tells Knox that you will find it difficult to recruit the Man in this quarter on the encouragement given, and it is the most unfavorable season of the year to Beat the Drum. Hopes Ogden returned to Philadelphia safely and is currently enjoying Knox's company. Talks of the success of the lottery. The Lottery is very rich as you will observe by the State of the Wheel in the inclosed paper. Joseph Peirce is disappointed in not hearing from you respecting the Sale of the Estate.

Thinks Knox should take up the issue of the Canal again, as the idea has many supporters. Notes that Samuel Ogden, after much trouble and anxiety, has finally finished his business with the State and is preparing to return to Philadelphia. Reports that no Major General has been chosen yet, but as the Governor's interest is opposd to me, on account of Cincin - &cc I shall have no expectation of succeeding.
