Writes that there have been no changes in the business of the reference. Is sure Mr. [William] Wetmore plans to take full advantage of Knox but that Ben [probably Benjamin Hichborn] and his associates are watching him closely. Captain [Thomas] Vose has not set out to go to the East, but will in a few days. Discusses elections and politics, mentioning that Governor [John] Hancock is very ill and that Mr. [John] Adams is the only man spoken of in this quarter as V.P. Says that he and their friends send their love to him and Mrs. Knox.

Discusses his attempts to locate high quality fish. Sends his love to Lucy Knox and their children.

Writes, On Wednesday morning the Bells in this Town were set a Ringing in Honor of the Day - the Birth Day of the New Government, and a [general] joy ran through the whole of the inhabitants of this City - I believe there is not a more Federal Spot in Union. - We are momently expecting an Express from New York, announcing the Election of John Adams, Esq. VP this will being very pleasing to him & perfectly gratifying to all the people in this quarter. Discusses celebrations surrounding Adams's election. Mentions the activities of their friends, and declares that Governor [John] Hancock is still unwell. Adds that the Supreme Court continues to sit, which is preventing Hichborn from leaving town with Jackson to visit Knox in New York. Does not think that he will be able to be with Knox when General [George] Washington arrives in New York, as he had hoped. He and their friends send their love to Knox and his wife. Docketed by Knox.

Delivered a letter to Vose from Knox, and watched Vose and his family pack their belongings and depart on a ship. Vose seemed to feel happy about the arrangements they made. Mentions that Mr. [Theodore] Sedgwick has been elected to Congress, which pleases the Federalists, and adds that General [David] Cobb, also a Federalist, is Speaker of the House in Massachusetts. Has enclosed a letter from Constant Freeman in which he asks for help finding a job in the new government (see GLC02437.04223).

The committee views the three contracts as tied to one land company and they cannot justify giving two of the contracts when the stipulations of the third which was to have been complied with so long ago, remains to be fulfilled. Says the committee appears determined to keep their [Dollar sign]5,000, but I doubt not we shall [beat] them of that ground tomorrow. Believes William Bingham's manners and address will effect his expectations. Free stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Writes that General [Benjamin] Lincoln likely will not be elected Governor, as Hancock has probably won reelection, with Mr. [Samuel] Adams elected Lieutenant Governor. Adds information about local elections. Advises Knox not to write back as he will be setting off to visit New York on 22 April and will likely see him by the end of the month.

Reports that Our Country is busy in making elections for the new Government - what is to take place the 1st of March. The people at large are becoming more and more strongly attached to it. Says New York and Virginia want a new convention before the new government meets, but that the majority do not want this to happen. Mentions that Our friend Genl Washington is looked up to as the only man for President - and it is said Mr. John Adams will probably be vice president. Hopes he can report on a government happily in operation without any commotion in his next letter. Reports that Catherine Greene has gone to Georgia. States he was on a several month visit to his proposed estate in Maine.
