Warns Knox that he must prepare your mind to hear much respecting the conduct of your friend [Nathaniel] Gorham, and the trouble & perplexity our friend has met with in this negotiation. Discusses his social and business meetings. The Massachusetts Senate has maintained its support of Jackson as Major General, but the House has not taken up the subject yet. The Governors and S. Adams's interest is against me, Jackson says, on account of the [Cincinnati]. Comments Congress's secret business must be revealed, and that they should know by Saturday the outcome of the Excise and Bank Bills. Many people are looking for their government appointments as well. Docketed on page one.

Notes he will move forward with the surveys. States he drew upon Duer for [Dollar sign]200 payable at 20 days sight to pay the sums mentioned his letter of 31 July. Says this purchase is an important one to the Concern. References receiving the joint letter of Knox and Duer of 29 July. Following directions from that letter he has notified these gentlemen of the committee who reside in this town of our intention of locating one million between the Penobscot & Schoodie & one Million on the Kennebec. Notes the committee will meet at the end of this week or the beginning of the next and that he will then try to secure the other million he wants to buy. Reports I have no doubt with a little management I shall be able to effect it - they will not negotiate for the sale of the six miles on the Penobscot without the direction of the Legislature, but I will touch them on the subject. Assumes that Knox has taken measures to get the [Dollar sign]5,000 to Boston by 15 August.

A debate took place and Sewall's supporters included William Eustis and James Bowdoin, but they were in the minority. Writes, many good Federalists are sorry that Judge Sewall made a question of this business. Talks about the favorable response to Knox's idea for a canal.

Asks how he should reply to a letter from James Webber, a London merchant, who wishes to collect a debt owed to him by Ogden. In a post script, comments on the sale of Colonel [Alexander] Hamilton's St. Lawrence lands at a low price to [Alexander] Macomb. Adds that he declined the same offer for his lands. Asks if Gouverneur might be able to sell the land for a better price while he is in England.
