Book excerpt: Writes that he has discussed Knox's case with Dr. [William] Eustis, who is clearly of opinion you ought to take the greatest care of yourself, as to your diet & exercise, for a twelve mounth to come, by heating your blood & over loading your stomach for many months would be the means of a return of the disorder. Mentions that the newspapers are full of Electioneering for governor and lieutenant governor. Major candidates for lieutenant governor are Mr. S[amuel] Adams and General [Benjamin] Lincoln. Believes that Mr. [John] Hancock will be elected, and Laco, an anonymous newspaper editorialist, will not injure his Election but rather promote it. Reports that Hancock always asks after Knox's health; Hancock was pleased about what Knox wrote in his last letter disparaging Laco. Encloses a directory of the titles and properties of the men in Boston. Asks about the procedure for soldiers to apply for bounty land. Discusses local elections. Sends his love to Knox's wife and family.

Discusses the election of the Vice President, and the desire of the people of Boston to support the Federal Government. Reports that he and Benjamin Hichborn are delayed in departing for their visit to New York because Hichborn must remain on the Supreme Court, which is still in session. Mentions that Captain [Thomas] Vose has not returned from the eastward yet, but has written friends that he likes his situation (as one of Knox's agents in the Waldo patent lands). Discusses his attempts to locate high quality fish. Sends his love to Lucy Knox and their children.

Discusses his attempts to acquire some fish to send to Knox, though he is having difficulty finding any of good quality.

Hopes to hear by the next post that Washington (likely Knox's son George Washington Knox, mentioned above) is out of all danger.

After reading his letter, showed it to Ben [Hichborn], who declared he has written to Knox about their business. Writes, On Wednesday morning the Bells in this Town were set a Ringing in Honor of the Day - the Birth Day of the New Government, and a [general] joy ran through the whole of the inhabitants of this City - I believe there is not a more Federal Spot in Union. - We are momently expecting an Express from New York, announcing the Election of John Adams, Esq. VP this will being very pleasing to him & perfectly gratifying to all the people in this quarter. Discusses celebrations surrounding Adams's election. Mentions the activities of their friends, and declares that Governor [John] Hancock is still unwell. Adds that the Supreme Court continues to sit, which is preventing Hichborn from leaving town with Jackson to visit Knox in New York. Does not think that he will be able to be with Knox when General [George] Washington arrives in New York, as he had hoped. He and their friends send their love to Knox and his wife. Docketed by Knox.

Reports that he sold Mr. [James] Swan's Elegant Coach to a Colonel Smith. Writes that the sitting of the Supreme Court has prevented him from paying Knox a visit as early as he intended to because the Colonel cannot leave (the Colonel's identity is unclear, but might be Benjamin Hichborn). When he is at liberty to leave, they will depart. Would also like to know when the President will arrive in New York, as he would like to be there with Knox at that time. Would also like Knox to send him some New York newspapers. Discusses the illness of the Governor of Massachusetts [John Hancock]. Comments on the Waldo patent negotiations, and provides information on Isaac Winslow and Benjamin Hichborn.

Writes, I am afraid whether I have any thing in writing that acknowledges him as his Son & that he ment [sic] to consider him as such with respect to his property. Forwards a letter from Dr. [William] Eustis concerning his desire to have the charge of the Invalids in Massachusetts (not present). Speaks highly of Eustis's integrity, and suggests Knox may want to appeal to Colonel [Alexander] Hamilton on Eustis's behalf, as Hamilton will be making the appointment. Mentions balls and parties being held in the area, and wishes that Knox's daughter Lucy was in Boston to attend it. Adds, I believe I drank too much wine yesterday, as I have a most severe headache this day - I can hardly see the paper on which I am writing. Includes post written on the address leaf. A note on the address leaf declares that the enclosure from Dr. Eustis had been given instead to Dr. [Andrew] Craigie to pass along to Knox.

Adds information about local elections. Advises Knox not to write back as he will be setting off to visit New York on 22 April and will likely see him by the end of the month.

Sends his love to Lucy Knox and the children. Also adds a note about his dealings with the Winslows, presumably about the Waldo patent properties.

Mentions that Mr. [Theodore] Sedgwick has been elected to Congress, which pleases the Federalists, and adds that General [David] Cobb, also a Federalist, is Speaker of the House in Massachusetts. Has enclosed a letter from Constant Freeman in which he asks for help finding a job in the new government (see GLC02437.04223).
